Born in Llandegla, where there is a Blue plaque commemorating this event writes contributor Geoff Evans on May 31 1880, he moved with his family to Bwlchgwyn at the age of 13 where he attended the council school, and, at the age of 14, became a pupil teacher.
He remained at the school until 1899 when he earned a scholarship to enable him attend teacher training college. He attended Bangor for examination to the Wesleyan Ministry, and headed the list of candidates. He finally left Bwlchgwyn school at the age of about 19/20 to attend Didsbury college in Manchester, to prepare him for his Ministry. In 1901 he resided at 14 Wesley Road, Bwlchgwyn, and later composed the Welsh hymn 'Arglwydd Nef ar Ddaear' to the tune of Pontmorlais. His Ministry took him all over north Wales and parts of northern England, including Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester. In 1917 at the Birkenhead Eisteddfod (Hedd Wynn's Black Chair) he was persuaded against his will to accept induction as a Bard, which he did, for the benefit of the Wesleyan Denomination, rather than personal aggrandisement. In 1924 he was awarded the title MA by the University of Wales, and later still honoured with the title D/Litt., in 1958, but refused to accept an OBE in 1962. He concluded his Ministry at Tregarth, near Bangor where he died in October 1967. He is buried at Tregarth Cemetery, within sight of his last chapel, Shilloh.
