Fron Choir

Rolf Harris with members of Froncysyllte Male Voice Choir Fron Choir have become the oldest boy band - with a combined age of nearly 4,000!

Born:
1947
Place of Birth:
Froncysyllte
The choir helped Rolf Harris re-record his classic Two Little Boys.
Biography:
Froncysyllte Male Voice Choir have become the UK's oldest boy band to make it into the album charts.

The choir whose members have an average age of 66 signed a record deal in 2006 with Universal Classics and released their first commercial recording, Voices of the Valley, which made it to in the album charts in its first week of release in mid-November 2006. Their follow-up album did the same thing with pre-orders before going platinum - selling 300,000 - and earning them a Classical Brit nomination in early 2008.

Choir member Dennis poses for a 2008 charity calendar - naked!

The publicity launch around the albums showed the boys planned to remain loyal to their roots for neither was held in a posh hotel - but the the Air Products Sports and Social Club in Cefn Mawr [2006] and the Bryn Howell hotel, Llangollen [2007].

The group was founded in 1947 but it took a chance meeting with Daniel Glatman, manager of boyband Blue, before fame finally came to call. Daniel heard them play at a wedding and was apparently bowled over by their sound.

The choir originally started in 1947 when plans were first announced to hold the first Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod.

According to the Fron Choir's own website, www.fronchoir.com, the village decided that the Eisteddfod was a good idea and local man Gomer Powell called a public meeting with the formation of a choir as the object.

The Froncysyllte Male Voice Choir was formed at that meeting with JR Jones (Joe Jordan) as the first chairman. A prominent county councillor, Joe was the driving force behind the choir in its early years although he was never a member. He maintained that his voice was too awful!

Lloyd Edwards, a well known local piano teacher was appointed conductor and a chorister's daughter, Menna Hughes - who was one of Lloyd's pupils - was appointed as the accompanist. To compete in the male voice competition at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod the choir needed 60 voices so Wilfred Jones, the leader of the Froncysyllte Youth Club, persuaded the young men of the village to join.

He was so successful that the 1947 Fron Choir had the youngest membership of any Welsh male voice choir.

Among the first to join was Dennis Williams, 75, when aged 16. He is now its oldest member.

"When we were first approached by Universal I never thought it would be this big, " Dennis told BBC Local News. And it didn't stop there because they performed on Parkinson's TV chat show over Christmas in 2006 and in Spring 2007, their debut album was nominated for the Classical Album of the Year award, though they missed out on the prize which was won by Sir Paul McCartney.

The next part of the Fron Choir saga is due to be a movie telling the story of their rise and rise. Scriptwriter Debbie Isitt, who wrote Hollywood movie Confetti, has been developing a script and met the boys for the first time at the launch of their second album, Voices of the Valley Encore, at the Bryn Howell on November 19 2007.

I live here in B.C. Canada and sure hope I will be able to buy your CDs - Voices of theValley & your Encore CD. Do you plan on coming to Canada at any time in the near future? It would be a real joy to be there in the audience listening to your beautiful voices. May God bless you all.

Whilst I was on holiday with my niece 2006 or 2007 (not too sure), we stopped off at Trevor to see the fabulous aquaduct. We could here the lovely voices coming from below so, being very nosey, decided to take a look. We came across a film crew and a choir and got as close as we could to watch. We sat quietly while there was take after take, enjoying the singing and taking photographs. This was a brilliant end to our holiday! It wasn't till months later that I realised who this choir was and here they were on TV. Needless to say I bought the CD and remember my stay in Wales while I listen to it.

Susan Gordon Jones (Whitehead) ex Cefn Mawr now SW
Whilst back in Cefn for a short visit last year I bought myself a present - a certain CD entitled "Voices of the Valley Encore". How could I resist that title "Vron plus France". So now in a small corner of Gascony can be heard the wonderful sound of Vroncysyllte Male Voice Choir at full volume (oh yes at full volume!). The local accents bring a lump to my throat. Guide me oh Thou Great Redeemer brings tears to my eyes but We'll keep a Welcome in the Hillside has me packing my suit case. Brilliant - keep it up lads - and best wishes to Owain Maelor Roberts (do you remember me?)

Congratulations to the Fron on their success with both CDs and concerts. I sang with D.L.Jones in a close harmony group in Shrewsbury a few years ago and I know how much he enjoys his singing. Good Luck for the future.

Stumbled upon this album by pure serendipity and just had to buy the new album (Encore) as well. I love their voices! My only gripe is that the album is like a medley so just when one gets caught up in a song, it's time for a new song. Thank you for many hours of listening pleasure and may you all continue to delight people for many years to come. God Bless.

Congratulations to the choir on getting their new album. I hope they have as big success with this one as they did with the first! Well done to Ann Atkinson as she has done tremendously to keep them under control [especially Dai Davies (my taid)].

Let me say I love the choir, congratulations on your success. I have fond memories of one of your members, David Jones (Lucas). We were in a band together many years ago (he was the lead singer). I am sure he will remember. Although I now have my bus pass, I am still playing in band called Movin' On with Phil Hughes who runs The Plough in Rhosymedre - keeping music as it should be, LIVE. My best wishes to all the choir and continued success. (Get Dave to put his clothes on!)

We recently heard the Fron Choir at Llandudno theatre and enjoyed the evening immensely, very entertaining. Keep singing boys, good luck with your future success. It was lovely to see the local lads doing well and our past neighbour Tudor Evans singing to one and all.

I shall be visiting in Oswestry, where my mother was born in 1906, from 12th to 16th May. Is there any chance I might hear this wonderful choir during this time?

Trevor Jones (AUSTRALIA)
I am delighted to see the Vron Choir doing so well, it brings back a wonderful memory for me the last time I was over in Wales. My brother David who is a member of the choir and his lovely wife Angie were renewing their marriage vows at Vale Crucis Abbey" in Llangollen. Anne, the conductor of the choir, with the aid of some members of the choir sang I'll walk beside you, and it was a wonderful rendition. Afterwards we all retired to a small reception and the choir members gave us a little concert on their own. All of a sudden Anne who knew I loved singing in a choir asked me if I would like to join the boys in a rendering of "Myfanwy". I was over the moon and I joined the baritone section and gave it all I had. It touched me very much to be included in a wonderful moment, and I will remember it as long as I live. Thank you Anne and the boys all the very best in the future.

The Fron Male Voice Choir have been nominated for the NS&I Album of the Year in this year's Classical Brit Awards. They are one of ten nominees and the award is decided by a public vote. You can either phone 09011 961 101 from Aril 10th or you can cast your vote early at www.classicfm.com Voters need to be a member of their 'Behind the Music' section before they can vote, but once they’ve have signed up they will only be able to cast one vote, so take care and vote wisely.

We were at The Bridgewater Hall Feb 25. What a truly memorable evening. As an old Trevorite I must admit I was unable to recognise many of the choristers, probably too old, the majority were younger than I am. I wish you every success.

We attended the Voices of the Valley concert at Rhyl last Thursday night having bought the CD some weeks ago. The evening was truly memorable and the sound that the choir produce can only be described as beautiful. Thanks to everyone involved for giving us such a wonderful evening.

As an ex probabtioner on the choir, I sadly had to leave (long story) but this choir is the best. They have wonderful members and everyone who is working in the background does a lot for them. My only hope is to rejoin them one day.

I wish to add to my comment of the other day about the Fron Male voice choir. I was looking at all the CD Albums listed in my local ASDA store. The Fron is at no.34 BUT this is the only one of the whole list that is SOLD OUT! What an achievement! Well done.

I remember, when I was a travel consultant organising a tour for the Fron to southern Holland. They took part in a joint concert in Maastricht with another Dutch choir. It was such a success that the Fron invited the Dutch choir back to Llangollen. I am now a member of Leigh on Sea Orpeus Male Voice Choir myself. Something I've always wanted to do since I heard the Fron choir singing on a tape recording I have of them.

Was introduced to the lads' music by my friend Norma while in Wrexham last month. The CD sounded heavenly while in Wales, so I brought one home to America where it is loved as well. As a Christmas gift to my parents, it was one of their favourites.

Betrice Bikali, from the Detroit Concert Choir in
I'm a member of the Detroit Concert Choir from the USA and we were fortunate to have been selected as one of three choirs to preform at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod Festival from America. It was thrilling and we heard a number of Welsh choirs singing in concert. Later, after the concert, we realised it was the US day of independance, July 4th, and adjourned to a local pub to celebrate. We were joined by the men of a certain Welsh choir and we sang our national anthems to each other. It was definitely one of the highlights of our trip. Good luck in your endeavours and never stop singing. B. Bikali

I had to wait until Christmas Day to get my copy of the CD but the wait was very worthwhile. I think it's magnificent as do other people who have listened to it with me. Jim White needs to be enlightened a little I think. Well done to all concerned.

I saw the report on BBC yesterday and the song "Sailing" was beautiful. I know when I hear those beautiful voices, I will be brought to tears. I really look forward to buying their CD and sharing it with others as well as seeing the movie. Thank you very much for such a inspiring gift of music.

Well done Ann and the lads. We are both thrilled with your achievements. We never thought that the Fron Choir would be competing with the Scissors Sisters! But there we are, enjoy your success. We purchased your album on day 1.

Great to see you - to Dave (Lukie) Jones. Your success is amazing. We have listened to the CD and think you are a wonderful choir. Just like the days you were in Ankers Away, Good luck to you and the choir.

Chris Davies, Lytham St Annes
As another local lad, now an ex-pat living in Lancashire, it's always good to be reminded of your roots & the people you grew up with. My Taid (Grandfather to you non-Welsh) was J R Davies, & both my Father & Uncle, Haydn & Merfyn Davies were members of the choir for a long period. Alas, now both passed over, I'm sure they'd be proud of how the choir is finally achieving the accolade it deserves. I'm obviously biased, since my brother Stephen carries on the family tradition of representing the Davies family in the choir for a 3rd generation. Well done to you all!

Deedee & Haydn Morris, Calgary, Canada
Haydn Morris was born in Froncysyllte in 1955. His father, Noel Morris, was a founding member of the Fron Choir. Haydn joined the choir in 1980. In 1984, the choir was invited to attend the Toronto International Festival as representative for the country of Wales. Edith (Deedee) Pritchard worked for the artist's management agency in Toronto that handled the choir's tour. She and Haydn met during that tour and continued an overseas courtship for the next two years. They were married in Vancouver in 1986 and settled in Johnstown. The following year, she was accepted to study voice at the RNCM. She appeared as a soloist with the Fron Choir on occasion. Deedee won the International Young Singer of the Year competition at Llangollen in 1987 having studied singing with John Daniel. He, at that time, was none other than the director of the Fron Male Voice Choir. Haydn sang with the Fron until the early 90's. Their first child, Emily, was born in 1992. In 1995, Deedee decided to cut down on her work and spend more time with her family. Olivia was born in 1996. In 2003, they moved from Trevor to Calgary.

I love the album, it's a breath of fresh air, and I think Sailing & You'll Never Walk Alone make the album all the better. Hope to see & hear you over Christmas.

To Sue Barker. It was nice to know that you still had the riding crop my father bought you all those years ago. I know he would have liked that and I know he would have been very proud of the Fron Choir too. Best wishes to you all for the future.
Mon Dec 11 09:32:55 2006

Dafydd Jones, exiled in County Durham
As Wilfred Jones' grandson it's great that the choir he was so proud to have helped form is having the success it deserves. Congratulations. P.S. Is Brad Pitt lined up to play him in the film?
Mon Dec 11 09:32:23 2006

Jim White
I was very disappointed with Voices from the Valley. I expected to hear just the choir not them performimg with a backing group who were sometimes louder than the choir and who were very discordant at times or perhaps that was just the arranger's work. And then to find that 2 of the tracks featured a soprano. Where was that shown on the CD cover? "When you walk through a storm" was the best track because I could hear the choir and only the choir. I will not buy another.

It couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch, we saw you performing at St Pauls, Pentre Broughton, the hairs stood up on our necks, fab! Good luck to you all, even though you're a Welsh choir, English speaking people get the chance to understand what is being sung, thank you.

We have just bought the CD and thought it was excellent especially You Raise Me Up in Welsh. We think the choir deserve their success especially the older ones who have been with the choir through thick & thin. Keep up the good work. See you in Hollywood!

I have just received the first CD, having followed the exciting story of the 'discovery' of the choir. Love the disc but may I just pass on a comment: please put more Welsh songs on future discs. (Where is Myfanwy? Or many of the great Welsh hymns?) Wonderful to have a Welsh MVC going into the charts so let's show fans more of the best, please? Good luck with it all.
Thu Nov 23 13:26:09 2006

I, together with Dennis Williams, was a founder member of the choir. Apart from the people already mentioned I think that J R Davies should receive an accolade. He lived for the choir and was responsible for keeping it together when the conductor Lloyd Edwards was in hospital for a few months. J R, although not a professional musician, did a brilliant job conducting the choir and giving a creditable performance at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod. Fron choir owes its existence to :- Gomer Powell, Lloyd Edwards, J R Davies, wilfred Jones, Bob Hughes and Menna Hughes.

Does anyone remember my mum Janet Peers or Evans or laterly White she was married to Ernie White senior aircraft inspector at Broughton. She was a twin to Kenneth Peers of Flint Mountain. They are all sadly no longer with us but I would love to hear any stories about them when they were younger because they all liked a bit of good clean fun something sadly lacking these days!!!! She was a local councillor for Broughton - staunch labour!!! She was in the Wrens during the war. Unfortunately there is so much about her youth I should have asked her but didn''t!! I now live in Barbados and I''m sure her and Ernie would have loved it!!! Thanks for the reply David Hart Emlyn Oldfield was my mum's boss I think. I will get to see the choir when I return for a holiday and bring my tissues with me when they sing Myfanwy.

Congrats to all in the Fron Choir, my dad was a member from the late 60's till his death in 1982, have always wondered why international acclaim missed you all, now it will come in leaps and bounds. Fantastic music through all the years, and you still have that magic sound and feel, that you give to each piece, making it your own and wowing the audience.

For SUE BARKER. Yes Sue, I remember Emlyn Oldfield that you mentioned. He was a member of the choir when I was in it, and he became Chairman for a while. I also remember him working at Broughton, as I used to travel there with him in 1953. I worked at the factory for a short spell. He was good company, but sadly is no longer with us.

My mum worked at Broughton with one of the founder members of the choir I think his name was Mr Oldfield can anyone remember him? I was very keen on horse riding at Netta's at Northop and Mr Oldfield gave me my pride and joy - a riding crop, it's over 40yrs old I still have it today. Is he still alive?

As an old member of the Fron Choir, I was delighted to hear of their good news, and wish them all success in the future. To my old friends who are still singing with them, I would say "Tiddler" would be proud of you! Good Luck.

I had the privilege of attending the Fron Male Voice Choir's concert Songs of the Shows on Saturday 21 October. It was the first choir concert that I've ever attended. My wife and I were curious after all publicity the choir have attracted with their new CD and we were not disappointed. Leyland Band and the Fron Male Voice Choir must be congratulated on a thoroughly professional and entertaining concert and both more than deserved the standing ovation given to them at the end of the concert. We are now new coverts to Male Voice singing, I am not surprised that Daniel Glatman was so moved when he first heard them. We are looking forward to the release of the Choir's CD in November and their concert in the William Aston Hall in March.

I am currently in Southampton on a PhD visit and I was viewing the BBC Breakfast show this morning. I was really struck by the lovely melody of this choir. Well done and I look forward to purchasing a CD with their tracks. Keep it up and best wishes for the coming years.

I would like to commend all the members of the Choir, not only for their remarkable achievements in the past, (entertaining the local people in the Eisteddfods and other venues) but for the humble and gracious attitude they have exhibited upon their upcoming notoriety.
