10: Knickers
Listen to the audio
"In 1968, in the Copacabana in New York, women were handing me table napkins, because it's a supper club; a night club. And this woman stood up and took her underwear off and handed them to me.
"So that was the start of it, and it was in the newspaper the following day. And then room keys in Las Vegas, you know, because people stayed in hotels in Vegas, so they all had room keys in their handbags.
"A woman threw her room key on stage and said if you are not doing anything later, this is my room number.

"It sort of stuck, so it's underwear and room keys. But you know, that's fine, as long as the audience is enjoying themselves, you know. As long as it doesn't interrupt what I am actually doing up there, which is first and foremost singing. The showmanship is second to that.
"But then again, it's a part of what I have done. It's like, even in the Ballad Of Tom Jones, Cerys says, "I never threw my knickers at you," and Tommy Scott says, "And I dont come from Wales." So the fact is that I am Welsh, and women do throw knickers at me!"
