Mabon

Mabon

Last updated: 28 September 2010

Mabon are an 'interceltic' band based largely in Wales, who are bringing together music from across the Celtic areas of Europe.

Led by Risca's Jamie Smith on accordion, Mabon have been going since 2000 and have retained a stable line-up since 2007. They play music that "draws inspiration directly from the traditional folk music of the Celtic countries.

"This is not Welsh music, nor Scottish or Irish; this is Interceltic music, a true exploration of forms and styles found in Celtic music and their forging into something bold and new."

They combine recognisable British forms of jigs and reels with Breton 'an dro', French 'mazurka' and Galician 'muinera'.

The band is made up of Jamie Smith, his father Derek on acoustic guitar , Iolo Whelan on drums, Oli Wilson-Dickson on fiddle, Calum Stewart on wooden flute and Matt Downer on bass (upright and electric).

They are all very accomplished musicians with a skill and dexterity that has seen them become a prime act on the folk and traditional scene, playing events such as Lorient and Cropredy and releasing three albums so far.

The third of those, Live At The Grand Pavilion, is out on October 25 2010. They released Ridiculous Thinkers in 2004 and OK Pewter in 2007.
