Towns & Villages : Powys
Official or unofficial, factual or fun, many places now have their own website. Get in touch if your town or village is online but not on this list. Ceredigion Town and Village Websites.
Brecon
http://www.brecon.co.uk
If you're a tourist looking for somewhere to stay in Brecon, you'll probably find this site really useful. It also includes ideas on things to do and has some nice photos of the Brecon Beacons National Park, as well as listings for local businesses, restaurants, services etc. The discussion board does not seem to be very popular judging by the number of messages posted when we looked (0).
Builth Wells
http://www.builth-wells.co.uk
Builth Wells has an attractive, well laid-out website which was relaunched in August 2003. It has a real community feel with snippits of town news, a photo gallery of local events and a community notice board. There are also links to local councils and businesses as well as descriptions of walks in the area and a 'What's On' section.
Crickhowell
http://crickhowell.org.uk
Crickhowell, according to this website, is located in arguably the most beautiful valley in the Brecon Beacons National Park and has a "lively, friendly community with a strong identity". You'll find online information here about local clubs, societies and organisations. The site also has details of accommodation, leisure facilities and businesses in the town.
Hay-on-Wye
http://www.hay-on-wye.co.uk
For a town whose name is synonymous with books, it's not surprising that the first section of this website is all about Hay's bookshops! It's packed full of other information too - from where to stay in the area to business listings, arts and crafts, and a picture gallery. It looks as if the site is updated regularly and it's also promoting a local campaign to bring broadband access to Hay.
Kerry
http://www.kerrynews.co.uk
Kerry's monthly newsletter is now available online although you'll need Acrobat Reader to download the document. Each issue is packed with community news, including details of local events, updates on the activities of the area's clubs and societies, and council reports. There's also a chat room for registered users and a library of archived editions.
Llandrindod Wells
http://www.llandrindod-wells.com
Not a colourful site but fine if you want to tour Llandrindod Wells and explore the unique Victorian atmosphere of the town. It provides a list of accommodation and a few useful links and telephone numbers from the area. There are also a couple of nice walks to follow but on the whole, it seems to be rather a static site with little in the way of current events or local news.
Llanidloes
http://www.llanidloes.com
A lot of work has gone into this site about "one of the great little market towns of Wales". It seems to be aimed mainly at visitors with photographic tours of places to eat, stay and shop. There's also a section for community news and events, and a fairly busy bulletin board.
Machynlleth
http://website.lineone.net/~rkwilli/index.htm
A great little site put together by Dick Williams who now lives in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, but who grew up in Machynlleth and who says he retains a great fondness for this fine old town. It's got local information, history, myths, pictures and links not only for Machynlleth but the Dyfi Valley in general. It even links to a site where you can build your own Machynlleth clock tower from cardboard!
Newtown
http://www.newtown.org.uk
A colourful site, nicely laid out but not particularly exciting. There's information about the town and its history, a little bit about local wildlife and a guided walk around some of Newtown's pubs. Ths site also has a special youth section which lists things to do and Newtown nightlife. The What's On section asking users to add an event to an online calendar seems to be used mainly as a posting board for birthdays and other messages!
Presteigne
http://www.presteigne.org.uk
Presteigne. Log on here for a potted history of the town, a directory of local websites and local businesses.
Launched in December 2006, the new website has been developed by the Presteigne and Norton Community Trust.
Suggested by Stephen Wilson.
Rhayader
http://www.rhayader.co.uk
If you're looking for things to do in Rhayader, you'll find lots of ideas on this site. The events pages are regularly updated and include information about small community events as well as bigger attractions such as the week-long Great Festival of the Outdoors. There's also a short history of the town, accommodation details, a list of local businesses and a guestbook.
Talgarth
http://www.talgarthcentre.org.uk/
What was the website for Talgarth Tourist Centre has become a one-stop shop for all kinds of information about the town - for both locals and visitors. For the tourist, there are details of places to stay, places to eat, things to do etc. For people who live in the area, the centre offers all sorts of services - from local bus timetables to a Credit Union, computer courses and public access to the internet. Most of the community information is available from the centre in Talgarth itself, rather than online.
Welshpool
http://www.welshpool.org
Welshpool is where Wales begins, according to this website at least, and if this is where your holiday in Wales begins, then this website is a good place to start. It's got lots of information about local activities and attractions, as well as an interesting history section. The events section hadn't been updated recently when we looked but there's enough on the other pages to give you ideas if you're a visitor or a local.
