Public Services

Firefighters With the development of e-government, most councils now have an online presence and services available on the web are growing all the time. We've put together a list of some of the main websites for this area, along with links to police, fire services and local support groups.

Aberystwyth Town Council
http://www.aberystwyth.gov.uk/
If you want to find out what the town council does and who sits on the council, this is the website for you - don't however expect an all-singing, all-dancing site. The news section is rather thin but it's a handy site if you need no-frills, factual information about this local authority.

Aber and North Ceredigion Residents' Association
http://beehive.thisissouthwales.co.uk/anctara
The Aberystwyth and North Ceredigion Tenants and Residents' Association was formed in November 2002 and its website offers advice on what to do about abandoned cars, anti-social behaviour or 'nightmare neighbours'. Contact details for the association's members are also listed. Suggested by Michael Jones from Aberystwyth.

Brecon Beacons National Park
http://www.breconbeacons.org
The Brecon Beacons is managed by a special National Park Authority which is made up of locally and nationally appointed members. You can find out more here about the authority's areas of responsibility, which include planning permission and a list of applications is available online. The site is also great for visitors with lots of information on activities and accommodation as well as a photo gallery of the area's beauty spots.

Ceredigion County Council
http://www.ceredigion.gov.uk
This is a fully bilingual website, which is split into two parts - one dedicated to tourism and the other dealing with factual information about the council's services. It's a very useful site for visitors, providing details of accommodation in the area as well as up-to-date listings of what's on and things to do - from walks in the countryside to quad biking. There are interesting profiles of the countys towns and villages, complete with pretty pics. And if you want to find out when your bins are collected or who your local councillor is, then you can find that information here too.

Cyswllt Ceredigion Contact
http://www.recovery.org.uk
Chris Williams from Bristol recommended this site:
"Cyswllt Ceredigion Contact, based in Aberystwyth, is a registered UK charity, which was set up in 1992. 'Contact' is a Day Service, providing help, advice and support for people with drug and alcohol problems, and for their families. They also offer support to people with eating disorders."

Dyfed-Powys Police Force
http://www.dyfed-powys.police.uk
You get an idea from this website of the sheer scale of the Dyfed Powys Police area - it's the largest across Wales and England, and covers more than half the landmass of Wales. This bilingual site outlines the forces policing plan and recruitment policy. It also has details about speed (or rather safety) cameras - where the fixed spots can be found in Ceredigion, Powys and Carmarthenshire - and the location of mobile units. The site also links to a UK-wide police website where you can report some minor crimes online, e.g. theft from a motor vehicle.

Mid & West Wales Fire Service
http://www.mawwfire.gov.uk/
With the fire dispute on-going, you can find out the latest on the industrial action front from this site as well as read up on general safety advice. Reports of Incidents of Interest are also posted here, along with press releases. There's also a Kids Quiz with questions on fire safety, such as what should you do if you discover a fire in a bedroom - answer all the questions correctly and you get a certificate from Freddie the Fire Engine!

National Assembly for Wales
http://www.wales.gov.uk
The National Assembly is responsible for a range of services in Wales, including education, health, transport, economic development and the Welsh language. Its extensive and bilingual website includes records of proceedings, policy documents, committee minutes and agendas. Background information about its role is also available in Arabic, Cantonese, Gujerati, Portuguese, Spanish and Urdu. Live webcasts of debates are the latest addition to the site

Powys County Council
http://www.powys.gov.uk
Not surprising perhaps for a council which prides itself on being a pioneer in the field of technology, this is a very comprehensive website with links to dozens local organisations - from off-road cycling in Radnorshire to community groups and business advice centres. Of course, you can also find out here who your local councillor is, what services the council provides and if you're job hunting, there's also a situations vacant section.
