Local News
If you're a news junkie, you'll like our quick links to the websites of local newspapers covering Mid Wales. If you know of any other sites we've missed, let us know.
Aberystwyth Today
http://www.aberystwyth-today.co.uk
An online version of the Cambrian News, this website republishes stories which have appeared in the weekly newspaper. It's not the most attractive of sites but it's a good source of local information, publishing around 12 news articles every week and about the same number of sports stories. It has a useful searchable archive going back to 2000. The site also carries features and reviews as well as classifieds and other commercial advertising although some sections (eg Family Notices) were empty when we looked. This link takes you to the paper's Aberystwyth content but see also cardigan-today, lampeter-today and machynlleth-today.
County Times
http://www.countytimes.co.uk
A nicely laid-out site publishing a selection of local news and sport stories which have previously appeared in the County Times weekly newspaper, which is based in Welshpool. There's a weekly farming feature as well as an announcements section for births, deaths, marriages and other personal notices. Much of the other content - recruitment, motoring, eating out - seems to be shared with other North Wales Newspapers titles and loses some of its local feel. The searchable archive is a handy tool.
Mid Wales Journal
http://www.midwalesjournal.com
A relatively new website, this is the online version of the Mid Wales Journal - a local weekly newspaper which is part of the Shropshire Star group. It covers Powys in general and Radnorshire in particular, republishing online around ten local news and sport articles a week which have previously appeared in print. There's also a page on local information which lists useful phone numbers etc. What's billed as the site's "comprehensive area guide" is slightly disappointing as it offers a page-long description of the area but if you're not a local, it's worth a read. Other content sits under the umbrella of shropshirestar.com - e.g. classifieds, free ads, property and jobfinder.
Shropshire Star
http://www.shropshirestar.com
A comprehensive website offering a daily diet of regional news and sport stories from the Shropshire Star evening paper. Although the majority of articles come from Shropshire, the paper also covers Powys and you can usually find at least 2-3 stories from this area on the site every day. There's also a discussion board, food and drink review section (though not many eating out places in Mid Wales) and other 'magazine' type content including horoscopes, guest columnists and holidays. There's a special section for Shropshire ex-pats and an MP/MEP Finder (but nothing on the Welsh Assembly).
Tivyside
http://www.tivysideadvertiser.co.uk
An online version of the Cardigan-based Tivyside weekly newspaper providing a round-up of local news and sport from south Ceredigion as well as features, obituaries and a letters page. You can also have your say in the "Forum" where topics include the Welsh Assembly, Cardigan Castle and banning dogs from Llangrannog beach. The site also publishes reports and results from local agricultural shows and Eisteddfodau, and has an on-going campaign to Save Cardigan Castle. Some Welsh-language content is also republished from The Tivyside and most of the site's headings are bilingual.
