Golf

Golf Not surprisingly perhaps, the region where Ian Woosnam learnt his craft has its fair share of golf clubs. We've pulled together a selection of club websites from Powys as well as Ceredigion. Let us know if there's a good one we've left out.

Aberystwyth Golf Club
http://www.aberystwythgolfclub.com
An unusual feature of this website is an interactive course map which gives detailed information on each of the 18 holes, including tips and photos. There's also a two-page history of the club, from its founding to its 75th anniversary as well as the usual info on green fees, membership etc.

Borth and Ynyslas Golf Club
http://www.borthgolf.co.uk
If you're competing in any of the club's Opens Competitions, this website has a handy facility allowing you to request a particular tee time. It also includes useful information for visitors such as green fees and accommodation in the area.

Builth Wells Golf Club
http://www.builthwellsgolfclub.co.uk
Builth Wells is thought to have the oldest golf clubhouse in Wales and England - according to its website which has a section on the history of the club. The site also has details of the year's fixtures and information about green fees as well as an online booking form. If you're not familiar with the course, take a peek at the photo gallery which shows the fairways at their best.

Suggested by Douglas Macleod from Llyswen near Brecon.

Capel Bangor Golf Club
www.capelbangorgolfclub.co.uk
This website provides details about Capel Bangor Golf Club situated three miles east of Aberystwyth. The site provides information about the course, a photo gallery and details about fishing on the club's grounds.
Suggested by David Evans from Bow Street

Cardigan Golf Club
http://www.cardigangolf.co.uk
Cardigan's website had just been relaunched when we looked in May 2004 and some of the pages were still being developed. However, it does provide some useful contact details, a brief description of the course, green fees and a bit about the clubhouse.

Cilgwyn Golf Club
http://www.cilgwyngolf.co.uk/
This website provides all you need to know about this 9-hole golf club based at Llangybi, some five miles from Lampeter. Suggested by Richard Milcoy from Lampeter

Cradoc Golf Club, Brecon
http://www.cradoc.co.uk
This website has been recommended to us by local member Steve Connelly from Crickhowell who emailed us to say the club has "arguably one of the most beautiful courses in Mid Wales. With views across the Brecon Beacons, Cradoc Golf Club is second to none!". The photos on the website are proof of the club's stunning setting - the best views apparently are from the 7th tee reached after a 'challenging' climb. You can check out all 18 holes online, find out about green fees and view a calendar of the year's Open Competitions.

Knighton Golf Club
http://www.knightongolfclub.co.uk/index.htm

This is a clear and detailed website with all the important info for members and visitors. There is a great hole-by-hole description with photos, and a history of the club as well as well laid out links for contact information, dress code and etiquette.

Suggested by Jeff Martin from Knighton

Llandrindod Golf Course
http://www.lwgc.co.uk
Llandrindod Wells is famous for its Victorian Festival and the design of this website echoes the glory of those bygone days. Its information, however, is very well grounded in the 21st century. If you're a visitor, you can find out where the club is, how much you can expect to pay in green fees, even details of a special winter deal to include 18 holes plus steak pie and chips. There's also a full description of the course, complete with pictures and an explanation as to why the 18th is known as Death or Glory.

  • Janet Day from Llandrindod Wells sent us these comments about the golf cours: "Llandrindod Wells has the most wonderful views of welsh hills. The course has spots where there is almost 360o of panoramic views..breath taking..fresh air like wine..."

    Llanidloes Golf Club
    http://www.stidloesgolfclub.co.uk
This website, recommended by Simon Parkes, claims that Llanidloes Golf Club has always drawn local members even when the sport is elitist elsewhere. There is certainly something for everyone, from junior, senior and mixed golf, to ladies and gents competitions. The site gives details of what's on offer, a description of the course with photographs, and directions and contact information.

    Llanymynech Golf Course
    http://www.llanymynechgolfclub.co.uk/
Llanymynech club has quite an impressive claim to fame. It was here that top class golfer Ian Woosnam learnt to play and you can read a few anecdotes about Woosie on the site. There's a comprehensive gallery with photos of the course, a full list of fixtures and a brief history of the club. You'll also find out here that this is a course with a split personality - it has 15 holes in Wales and three in England! There's a plaque on the fourth hole saying Drive in Wales. Putt in England!

    Welshpool Golf Club
    http://www.wiredwales.com/wpgolf
"Gleneagles does not offer anything like the spectacular shots with which Welshpool abounds" - that's just one of several quotes on this website extolling the virtues of the club. There are some pretty pictures of the fairways and information about green fees but not much else so it probably won't take you as long to get around the website as it would to play an 18-hole round here.

    Your say

Steffan Davies from Capel Bangor says: "Capel Bangor Golf Course is a stunning nine hole golf course set in the heart of the mid wales countryside, 5 miles from Aberystwyth. A course which offers a test to any golfer with its numerous trees and water hazards.".

And Nathan from Borth says: "I agree with Steffan Davies that it is the best 9 hole golf course in Mid Wales. I've been there and you have to see it and play it to believe it."

Edna Pugh from Bewdley is also a fan of this course:

"I agree with Steffan and Nathan - Capel Bangor Golf Club is an excellent nine hole course interesting to play and set in mature landscaped grounds. The course is very well kept and I beleive would give some of the well known courses and run for their money."
