Festivals

Carnival statue Mid Wales plays host to a huge variety of festivals every year and to make it easier for you, we've put together a page of links to some of the main websites. Tell us about any other local festivals.

Festival in the Shire
www.festivalintheshire.com
This website publicises the Festival in The Shire which takes place at Plas Machynlleth between 13 and 15 August 2010. The site has sections on the festival itself, exhibitors, the associated conference and more. Suggested by Mark Faith from Machynlleth

Brecon Jazz
http://www.breconjazz2004.co.uk
Details of the programme for Brecon Jazz 2004 won't be available online until May - but you can use this link to subscribe and get the latest info on this year's festival. There's also a link to the 2003 Brecon Jazz online coverage, with reports and photos of the previous year's event.

El Sueno Existe
www.elsuenoexiste.com
This website celebrates the life and work of music and theatre director Victor Jara, including a three day festival held in Machynlleth in August 2007.

Website suggested by Tony Corden

Hay Literary Festival
http://www.hayfestival.co.uk
All you need to know about the Hay Festival in one convenient place. You'll find full programme details for 2004 as well as general information on how to get to Hay and how to secure accommodation during the busy week of the festival. If you've ever fancied working on the event - as a steward or runner for example - you can apply for jobs on the site too. And if you missed the 2003 events, you can listen to an audio stream of authors' talks - including Claire Tomalin, Germaine Greer and Don DeLillo.

Hwyl Hydref
www.devilsbridgefestival.org.uk
This website is dedicated to the annnual Devil's Bridge-based arts festival. The comprehensive site has sections dedicated to music, dance, crafts, assommodation providers and ticket sales.

Llanidloes Fancy Dress
http://www.llanifancydress.co.uk
Every July, the town of Llanidloes in Powys puts on a huge fancy dress party when the streets are full of colourful characters. The website consists mainly of pictures of past parades from 1999 onwards. There's also a guest book where users can add comments.

Llanwrtyd Wells Festivals
http://llanwrtyd-wells.powys.org.uk
Llanwrtyd Wells may be Britain's smallest town but every year it hosts a dozen different festivals - from the World Bog Snorkelling championship to the Man versus Horse race and the Real Ale Wobble. As you'll see from the website's calendar, there's barely a month of the year which doesn't have at least one festival listing.

Presteigne Festival
http://www.presteignefestival.com
The Presteigne Festival of music and the arts is held during the last week of August and its website lists full details of what's on. There's also a short history of the event which was first held in 1983, along with articles on the festival orchestra and its premieres.

Sheep Music Festival
http://www.sheepmusic.info
A three-day festival of funk, folk and roots music, suitable for all ages, with workshops and food stalls. Now held on Wentes Meadows near Presteigne, the event is organised by Sheep Music from Knighton and has been held annually since 1991. Details of the latest festival appear on the site a couple of months in advance. There's also an online booking facility, a photo gallery and location details.

Royal Welsh Show
http://www.rwas.co.uk
Whether you're a regular visitor or planning your first visit to the Royal Welsh Show at Llanelwedd, Builth Wells, then it's worth having a look first at the event's official website. It has a full list of activities across the four days and all competition results will be posted on the site daily during show week (you can also check details of previous winners dating back to 1999). Other practical information includes the location of the various car parks, camping details and a showground plan as well as a long list of useful on-site services such as banks and baby changing rooms. There's a special page for overseas visitors and a history of the Show which celebrates its centenary in 2004. When it's not hosting the Royal Welsh, the showground at Llanelwedd is used for other events - dates and details all on the website.

Talgarth Festival of the Black Mountains
http://www.talgarthfestival.org.uk
A two-day festival held over the last weekend in August and described as a celebration of food and farming, culture and crafts. Details of this year's festival are available online from May onwards - but the website gives you a taste of what to expect with photos and articles from previous years.
