Family History

Family photo from the 1920s If you're interested in tracing your family history, you'll find a mine of information in these websites. If you know of any other local sites, let us know.

On this page, we've listed local Mid Wales websites. Click here for other useful national and international geneaological sites.

Brecknock Society
www.brecknocksociety.co.uk/
This website was launched in April 2009 to coincide with the publication of Volume XL of their Journal, Brycheiniog, now in its 54th year. The website includes information on the Sir John lloyd Lecture, an oral archive project and much more. Suggested by Brynach Parri

Cardiganshire Family History Society
http://www.cgnfhs.org.uk/index.htm
If you've got roots in Ceredigion, then you'll get a lot out of this site. Each parish, town or village has its own individual (and very long) page signposting the various sources available locally to those on the genealogical journey. Most of the research can be bought over the web - a microfiche containing parish records for the Geneur Glyn Hundred from 1813-1837, for example, will cost £2.50. There are links too to other family history websites in the area.

Ceredigion Archives
http://archifdy-ceredigion.org.uk/links.html
The work of Ceredigion Archives is to collect and preserve documents about the county's history and make them available for research. You need to visit the Archives office in Aberystwyth to make full use of their records but you can find out exactly what documents are in the collection from the website. You can also read the organisation's newsletter online (although there didnt seem to have been one since winter 2001 when we looked in September 2003).

Dyfed Family History Society
http://www.dyfedfhs.org.uk
The DFHS encourages and assists people in all parts of the world who are pursuing history research in the old county of Dyfed. This is made up of Ceredigion (formerly Cardiganshire), Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire. It is a comprehensive resource for researchers providing information such as 'Frequently Asked Questions', a bibliography of books to use and statistics on the different localities. A site which is well worth a visit.

Llangynfelyn
http://www.llangynfelyn.org/hafan.html
A comprehensive and fully bilingual website for the small parish of Llangynfelyn in the north of Ceredigion. Census details from 1841-1901 are listed along with comprehrensive parish and chapel registers fo births, deaths and marriages. There are also photos of the parish past and present. As well as family history, the site also covers local history. There are some fascinating snippits to be found in the diary of a nineteenth century schoolmaster whose jottings include a visit by an Italian monkey and a confrontation with an axe-wielding mother.

Montgomeryshire Genealogical Society
http://home.freeuk.net/montgensoc/index.htm
The Society states that its main aim is to help members trace their Montgomeryshire family histories as well as members with family connections in neighbouring Shropshire, Cardiganshire, Denbighshire, Merionethshire and Radnorshire. Its website lists details of all its publications - including parish regsiters, census and memorial indexes. The detailed information is only available in print and not online. The site also includes dozens of old photos and offers interesting insights on past times such as the 1671 Montgomeryshire Hearth Tax.

National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth
http://www.llgc.org.uk
The National Library is acknowledged as the principal centre for researching Welsh genealogy and a personal visit to Aberystwyth is probably in order for the committed genealogist. There is a certain amount of information online but on the whole, the website lists material available for viewing in the Library rather than material accessible on the web. You can also find out more on the site about the Library's search service (for which there is a fee) and there's a useful guide for anyone starting off on a family history hunt.

Old UK Photos
www.oldukphotos.com/wales.htm
This website is dedicated to old photos of Wales. You can access photographs by clicking on the shire and county sections.
Website suggested by Phil Evans from Sennybridge

Powys Archives
http://archives.powys.gov.uk
This is the website for the Powys County Archives Office which is located in Llandrindod Wells and which serves as the official repository for the records of the modern county of Powys (first established in 1974) and the three former counties of Brecon, Montgomery and Radnor. You wont find an incredible amount of detail online but you will find a lot of information on where you need to go in order to find what you're looking for.

Powys Digital History Project
http://history.powys.org.uk/history/intro/menu3.html
The site was created by Powys County Archives with the help of the county museums, libraries, and local people. It brings together original documents, photographs and other material from six locations in Powys.

Powys Family History Society
http://www.rootsweb.com/~wlspfhs/
Powys Family History Society covers the old counties of Breconshire, Montgomeryshire and Radnorshire. You'll find details online of the indexes held by the Society and information on how you can use the search the database (fee payable). There's also a FAQs section - handy for those embarking on a family history hunt.

Radnorshire Genuki
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/RAD/
The Radnorshire Genuki site is a no-frills site but provides a useful portal, singposting where to go to look for further information about ancestry from this part of Powys.

Rootschat
http://www.rootschat.com
Roots Chat is a messaging forum for people researching their family history or local history. The focus is on Ireland and the British Isles. The service is entirely free. Each county of Wales is listed individually.
Website suggested by Jan Lloyd from Shrewsbury who wrote: "A very friendly Family History site which has been an invaluable part of my own family history research. There are separate boards for each county in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland plus many other Board covering a variety of topics. It is free to join, and free to use!"

Ystradgynlais Family History Society
www.ystradgynlaisfhs.co.uk
This site provides information on the Ystradgynlais Family History Society. This group was founded in 1995 and it meets once a month in the town's library. Sections include research services offered by members and the history of the parish. Interestingly, the society has produced a video/dvd which contains photographs/pictures of the town and surrounding area.
