Books

A shelf of Welsh books Mid Wales is well-known for its literary connections. It's home to the National Library and the Welsh Books Council as well as a host of publishers. Here's a list of links but if you know of others, please get in touch.

  • Bookshelf mini site...

    Ceredigion Public Libraries
    www.ceredigion.gov.uk
Not a standalone site but part of Ceredigion County Council's main website. Nonetheless, a good place to find out more about your local library - its location and opening times as well as contact details and internet access. One great feature we found was the online catalogue which enables you to check if the book you want is available at your local branch.

    Gwales
    www.gwales.com/intro
Gwales is the internet bookshop for Wales. Run by the Welsh Books Council, this is the ideal starting point for finding those obscure Mid Wales titles.

    Gwasg Gomer
    www.gomer.co.uk
The website of Gomer Press, Wales' largest independent publisher based in Llandysul. Here you will find books from Wales, about Wales, in both Welsh and in English. Publishing over 120 titles a year, you can keep up to date with their tally on their website.

    Honno Welsh Women's Press
    www.honno.co.uk
The Welsh Women's Press Honno is based in Aberystwyth. Their website was undergoing a revamp when we looked in December 2005. Content includes latest news and a back catalogue often offering generous discounts.

    Y Lolfa
    www.ylolfa.com
Based in Talybont, Y Lolfa was set up by Robat Gruffudd in the late 1960s in order to promote lively, innovative material in Welsh. It now publishes a range of material in both Welsh and English, from children's books to local history and poetry.

    National Library of Wales
    www.llgc.org.uk
Aberystwyth is home to the National Library of Wales, which is the only copyright library in the country. Through this comprehensive website, you can gain access to the library's various catalogues including wide ranging digital content.

    New Welsh Review
    www.newwelshreview.com
The New Welsh Review, based in Aberystwyth, is Wales' leading literary magazine focusing on Welsh writing in English. The website provides tasters of the content of current and past issues, details of how to contribute and the opportunity for entry to the New Welsh Review discussion forum.

    Parthian Books
    www.parthianbooks.co.uk
Parthian Books is an independent publisher based in Cardigan who have developed a national profile, including winning the initial contract for the Library of Wales series. Check the website for all the latest news, information about submitting work and details of writers workshops.

    Planet Magazine
    www.planetmagazine.org.uk/html/splash.htm
Planet is a bi-monthly magazine covering the arts, culture and politics in Wales and beyond but its base is in Aberystwyth. In addition to features on and interviews with contemporary Welsh writers, several poems and one short story are published in every issue of the magazine. Log onto the website for a flavour of the magazine.

    Paul Henry
    www.paulhenrypoet.co.uk/
This site is dedicated to the work of Aberystwyth-born poet and songwriter. He presents the 'Inspired' series of arts programmes for BBC Radio Wales. The site includes poems, songs, and information about his publications.

    Welsh Books Council
    www.cllc.org.uk
This Aberystwyth-based organisation provides services to the book trade in Wales including publishing grants, marketing advice and design services. Its website has lots of useful contact information plus the council's bi-monthly newsletter, 'In Print'.

    Welsh Poetry Competition website
    www.welshpoetry.co.uk
The aim of the competition is to encourage and foster 'the wealth of creative writing talent that exists in Wales but currently languishes in the doldrums.' The site has information about the annual competition as well as details about the judge and links to Welsh writers.
