Aberystwyth

Aberystwyth Castle and Old College Aberystwyth has all kinds of websites, covering all walks of life. From council to cricket club, library to lifeboat, we're trying to bring the town's online site together in one convenient section. Tell us about any others you've come across.

  • Aber Life on bbc.co.uk...

    Aberystwyth
    www.aberystwythguide.org.uk/
An unofficial site giving loads of info about Aberystwyth - including a detailed history timeline going back to 500BC. You can also check out how well you know the town's architecture in the Aber Bits section which, as the name implies, has photos of interesting bits of buildings. The site also includes a list of accommodation, restaurants and shops as well as clubs and societies. Written by a former Aber student, the site also has quite a lively message board with topics ranging from house prices to the Christmas lights ceremony.

    Aberystwyth Arts Centre
    http://www.aber.ac.uk/artscentre
As befits the main regional arts venue for Mid and West Wales and the largest arts centre in Wales, this website is comprehensive - detailing full listings of all the centre's shows and exhibitions. Details of exhibitions, along with all of the centre's other events, can be found on the website along with useful information on how to book tickets, details of courses and facilities available to the public and how to get your work selected for one of the centre's four exhibition spaces. Very handy links to local, national and internatonal arts-oriented websites.

    Aber Info
    http://www.aberystwyth.org.uk/
An excellent site, easy to navigate and offering a wealth of information about the town, from past history to present day. As well as the usual information on local services and attractions, there's a quirky page called 'Town Life in Photos' which includes snaps of what's going on or changing in Aberystwyth - for example, the closure of a local chip shop and a display of sugar cubes in the main street. The site also has a comprehensive collection of town galleries and links to other local websites.
Suggested by Matthew Burt from Congleton

    Aberystwyth Cricket Club
    http://www.aberystwyth-cricket.co.uk
This feels like a real community site. It's regularly updated, with lots of snippets about what's happening at the club as well as the usual pages of fixtures, results, team players etc. You can also check out the clubs annual highest-scorers and wicket-takers dating back to 1974!

    Aberystwyth Online
    http://www.aberystwyth-online.co.uk
An attractive and well laid-out site offering a comprehensive guide to Aberystwth and the area. Details of local accommodation, attractions and eating out places are listed along with useful numbers for the towns schools, doctor surgeries etc. There are some nice panoramics too from the top of Constitution Hill and the Castle.
    Suggested by Charlie from Aberystwyth

    Aberystwyth Town Football Club
    http://www.atfc.org.uk
Aberystwyth Town FC launched a new website ahead of the 2005-2006 season with full details about the latest squad and management team as well as forthcoming league fixtures and friendlies. It's also got lots of statistics on the ups and downs of the Black & Greens - from the late 19th century to present day.

    Aberystwyth Golf Club
    http://www.aberystwythgolfclub.com
An unusual feature of this website is an interactive course map which gives detailed information on each of the 18 holes, including tips and photos. There's also a two-page history of the club, from its founding to its 75th anniversary as well as the usual info on green fees, membership etc.

    Goginan Community Website
    http://www.goginan.com/index.shtml
This site aims to show the energy and passion of the small village of Goginan near Aberystwyth. It features a wide range of work from the world of arts and crafts, and highlights work by artists from the village. You can also find lists of up and coming events, and by clicking on the picture link find lots of interesting and seasonal pics of the surrounding area. Suggested by Simon from Aberystwyth

    Aberystwyth Karate Club
    http://www.aberkarate.co.uk
Choku zuki bassai dai bachi... these are just a few of the karate terms on which this website can shed a lot of light. Its a fairly comprehensive site giving details of the clubs past achievements as well as listing training times and future events. On the lighter side, there are lots of photos here of the club's social evenings - from Halloween to Christmas and brithday parties.

    Aberystwyth Lifeboat
    http://www.aberystwythlifeboat.org.uk
How often have you seen the lifeboat heading out to sea and wondered what was happening? Well, click on to this website and you can find out all about the latest "shouts" and who was rescued when, where and how. There's also a forum section where you can chat, post a message, get information or ask questions about anything to do with lifeboats. You can read about the station's history here and see photos of the local volunteers who make up the Aberystwyth lifeboat crew.

    Aber Wiki
    http://aberwiki.org
"An independent Aberystwyth - centered wiki. Over a thousand pages of varying quality and seriousness." Suggested by Dan Ross from Aberystwyth.

    National Library of Wales
    http://www.llgc.org.uk
Sprawling and difficult to navigate, the NLW's website serves both as a starting point for prospective users of the library, detailing the various collections held there, as well as allowing surfers to dip a toe into the vast ocean of information available. The result is a little bewildering but there are unexpected gems, such as the "Image of the Week" from the Geoff Charles collection - Wales' answer to Bert Hardy, a chronicler par exellence of Welsh society in the 20th century. Notable also are the online exhibitions - digitised versions of past NLW exhibitions. The one on David Lloyd George, for example, is probably the most comprehensive resource on the great politician anywhere on the web. Another gem is the section devoted to political campaigning in Wales. The history of the protests against the creation of the Tryweryn Dam, for example, is particularly well told using photographs, newspaper clippings and video. An excellent resource for schools, just a shame that it's buried seven clicks deep. Within this site is the online database for the National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales - the definitive collection of sound, film and video recordings relating to the culture and life of Wales and the Welsh. Just think, one day we might even be able to view / listen to the material online!
Suggested by Dafydd Davies from Aberystwyth

    Aberystwyth Rowing Club
    http://www.aberystwyth-rowing.org.uk
Want to know the difference between rowing and sculling? Do you know what a Celtic Longboat is? Everything you ever wanted to know about rowing can be found here, along with a history of the Aberystwyth club - its past achievements and future challenges. There are also some old photographs of the early Aberystwyth rowing teams and some details about the bi-annual Celtic Challenge race, which was started by a member of the Aberystwyth lifeboat crew back in 1989. Suggested by William Troughton and Fiona Edwards from Aberystwyth.

    Aberystwyth Lions
    www.aberystwythlions.org.uk/
Here's the site where you can find out everything the town's Lions Club gets up to. Sections include those on latest news, fundraising, its twin club and membership details

Suggested by Brian Wiley from Aberystwyth.

    Aber Diary
    http://www.aberdiary.co.uk
Aber Diary is the free monthly events listing telling you what's on in and around Aberystwyth. You can pick up a copy round town or download the latest issue from the website.
    Suggested by Nat Taplin

    Aberystwyth Rugby Club
    http://aber-rugby.tripod.com
Launched in autumn 2005, Aberystwyth Rugby Club's new website is a great place for fans to follow the fortunes of the town from the comfort of their computer. Use the site to check on latest fixtures, results and Aber's place in the league table. Regular match reports are also published, with a promise of player profiles and a club photo album to be added soon.

    Aberystwyth Neighbourhood Policing Team
    www.dyfed-powys.police.uk/en/ceredigion/neighbourhoods/university/
This web page is part of the Dyfed Powys Police Force site and provides information about the local Neighbourhood Policing Team, news and appeals, safety and security advice and publications.

    Aberystwyth Town Council
    http://www.aberystwyth.gov.uk
If you want to find out what the town council does and who sits on the council, this is the website for you - don't however expect an all-singing, all-dancing site. The news section is rather thin but it's a handy site if you need no-frills, factual information about this local authority.

    Penparcau Family Centre
    http://mysite.freeserve.com/penparcau
This is a very bright and colourful website for what's described as "a successful family centre where you can take your kids to play". There are lots of photographs on the site as well as a useful link to the Ceredigion Toy Library where you can borrow toys for free after paying an annual membership fee of £1.50.
Suggested by Michael Jones from Aberystwyth.

    Aberystwyth Shotokan Karate Club
    www.clwb-heb-enw.co.uk
This is the website for the 'club with no name' - Aberystwyth's KUGB Shotokan karate club which was formed in 2004. Use the site to find out how to join, read profiles of the instructors (or sensei), view photo galleries of training sessions or check up on club news.
