Christmas Decorations

Machynlleth house decked out in Christmas decorations

  • Take the photo tour

Take a look at a photo gallery of what some people might say is the best dressed house in Machynlleth!

There's one Machynlleth house which stands out from the rest at Christmas. It's in Cae Crwn and it belongs to Wendy Lewis who transforms her home into a beacon of festive lights every year. Read her story here then take the photo tour.

"I love it. I started decorating the outside of the house 10 years ago. It started off with one snowman and one Santa, and has progressed every year since then. Children come over asking when we are going to put up the decorations.

I've always been fanatical about Christmas. I had children and was even more! I then started buying decorations for the outside as well as for the inside. I had to get rid of some this year and buy new ones, because they only last for so long, but it's not too expensive because I budget for the whole of the year. Electricity is not expensive because we use low voltage and rope lights, which last longer that means we don't have to buy bulbs all the time!

The whole family are involved in putting then up, and the local school come round to see them. We started putting this year's decorations up on the 7th of November, making sure the bulbs worked as we were going along. The lights have been up from when it gets dark to about nine every night since the middle of November.

Nativity decorations My favourite piece is the nativity I've waited years to get it. It's a little one because the large nativity costs a lot, but we'll get it eventually! I also like the chapel. We had a job getting this piece, because I'm told that it's only one of six in Britain.

We have visitors from all over the place coming over to see the decorations, and taking photos. Some have come as far as Canada, others from Cardiff and around Powys. If the lights are not on, some people will knock on the door and ask if they can be put on.

I've never collected for charity before, but as the collection of decorations has grown bigger this year, I decided to collect money for Ysgol Cedewain, Newtown, which is a special needs school for the whole of Powys."
