Small Schools

Myfanwy from Llanfair Caereinion says parental choice is important:

"What price choice if small schools are closed? I just made the decision to send my four year old to a smaller school precisely because I believe her educational needs will be best served there: if the small schools are closed, this will be impossible"

Jo from Bridgend grew up in Libanus near Brecon where there was often a question mark over the future of the local primary school:

"I think its a shame that small schools are forced to fight for their survival. I along with my sister and brother went to a very small primary school (Libanus, one of the unlucky ones in Powys that is now set to close) and I remember the whole time each of us were there (a period in total from 1979 1999) the school was always under the threat of closure or had the threat of closure looming. This can be very upsetting when you are six years old and worrying that you are going to be separated from your friends.

Attending a small school was good as everyone was very close and looked out for one another. Some may argue that because a school is small pupils miss out, this was not the case for us as we often used to team up with other small schools in the area such as Tal-y-Bont (long since closed), Trecastle (also set to close) and other schools in the area for sports days and joint concerts etc.

The small school is the heart of a village and community, by closing the school you are also destroying an important part of village life that can never be recaptured.

I wish Llangedwyn primary school all the best in their fight to remain open and I would like to encourage others to also show their support."

Ian from Llangedwyn Primary School had this to say when his school was facing closure:

"I'd be really sad and would miss the teachers and all my friends. It's a really good building. We have fun and the adventure playground is really good to play in too."

Charlotte from Llangedwyn Primary School said she wouldn't want to have to travel to a new, bigger school:

"I wouldn't want the school to close. I would miss my friends, my teachers and the adventure playground. It wouldn't be very nice. I don't want to go to a big school because it takes long to get there."
