Red Kite

Red Kite

Last updated: 14 July 2008

Mid Wales is Kite Country - once the last bastion of the Red Kite in Britain and now a stronghold for this beautiful bird of prey.

Watch a video clip on Red Kites...

About the Red Kite

Until very recently, the Red Kite was on the brink of extinction. for hundreds of years, gamekeepers and farmers had been encouraged to put down poison to kill the bird. As its numbers decreased, so the value of its eggs to collectors went up.

By the turn of the twentieth century, only a handful of breeding pairs remained in the whole of the UK. They'd taken refuge in the isolated hills of the Cambrian Mountains in Mid Wales.

With the Red Kite about to disappear from these lands, the RSPB and other conservation organisations put out a call to action. The Red Kite population was put under a huge surveillance operation.

Every bird was monitored. Farmers were encouraged to hold daily feeding sessions. Nests were guarded by a team of wardens and volunteer watchers - even a team of Gurkha soldiers were called in to help with guard duties.

Those efforts were not in vain and the Red Kite programme has been one of the conservation success stories of the twentieth century. Latest estimates put the number of breeding Red Kite pairs in Mid Wales at more than 250.

As a tribute to its survival skills, the Red Kite was voted Bird of the Century in 1999. A year later, at the turn of the millennium, the Red Kite was also dubbed Wales National Bird.

If you know where to look and what you're looking for, it is now rare to drive through Mid Wales without catching at least a glimpse of this elegant raptor with its chestnut plummage and distinctive forked tail. Not surprisingly perhaps, the regions been dubbed Kite Country.

To be guaranteed of seeing the kite, check out one of the area's Kite Feeding Stations:

  • Gigrin Farm Feeding Station
  • Pont Einon Feeding Station, Cors Caron, Tregaron
  • Bwlch Nant yr Arian, Ponterwyd

The Red Kite is still one of Britain's rarest birds but it has been re-introduced in some other areas, including the Chilterns in England and parts of Scotland. Monitoring of the Red Kite is now largely carried out by the Welsh Kite Trust.

We live on the edge of Speen a small village in the Chilterns. A pair of red kites is regularly perching in daytime in the top of a large lime tree at the top of our back garden. We think this pair raised one chick (2009)from its nest in the wood next to us. About seventeen kites (we then lost count) soared above the village one day last week. Wow!

Mike (in Bangalore) you are right 'Kites' are common in India, but these are Black Kite (Milvus nigrans) not the Red Kite (milvus milvus) The Black Kite is globally common. The Red Kite is restricted to Western Europe and only in the UK is it now really flourishing. Even in Spain, a previous stronghold, it is struggling to maintain numbers. Our Red Kites will probably soon become 'glabally important' in 'biodiversity' terms, lets all enjoy them!

As there are more wind turbines due for mid wales with rotor tips travelling at more than 100mph, if you were a red kite, would you not move to an area where this man - made hazard did not exist? Perhaps we can issue the birds with airbags?

Just saw 5 red kites, yes 5 flying over our estate in south cheltenham (nr leckhampton hill). Looked like they were dive bombing each other and then two of the four got quite close (is it mating season for them?). in the few minutes they were above us i don't think i saw them flap their wings once.....if it wasn't for the dive bombing they would of just looked like 'Kites' lol

I have had friends in the Builth area of Wales for over thirty years. Every year I used to take my holidays with them until they sadly passed on.In the beginning there was only the odd sighting of Kite in the hills above Beulah. Now kite can be seen in numbers all over Wales, and the breeding program is a credit to all concerned. However I do have reservations with regard to the feeding sites. These sites have encouraged numbers to rise above a level to which these birds could find food for themselves.I have watched gather in the hills in flocks and small groups waiting for the time to move on to a feeding station.I feel that the conservation work has deskilled them and that young birds are being denied the opportunity to aquire these skills in the first place.I would welcome the views of others and in particular the RSPB.

Driving from Llanrhaedr-ym-Mochnant over the hills to Llanarmon-Dyffryn-Ceiriog, we spotted a red kite circling over a field beside the road. Far from being disturbed by our car, the kite proceeded to circle around us, as if showing off, and even seemed to follow the car when we moved off. A short distance further on, over a field to our left where silaging was taking place, there were masses of seagulls circling low and amongst them 2 red kites also circling low. A moment or two later another one crossed in front of us to our right. So in a short space of time we saw 3 or 4 all within%! 20close range and completely unperturbed by people, car or tractors. We had heard that there had been kite sitings around Llanarmon DC and we did see a single one last year, but it looks as if there is now a breding colony in the area.Thursday July 9th 2009 12.15

Red Kites are a plenty out Harewood way. I make regular trips just to sit and watch them soaring, there are as many as 10 although not all flying together. They seem to prefer being in pairs, there is also a couple of adult birds with a Red Kite junior if you travel along Wetherby Road towards Bardsey you can see them as a famiy, its a great sight to see. Wonderful birds so nice to see them being free - lets keep it that way.

I have seen many Red Kites while visiting relatives in Didcot or along the M40. Thought I had seen one circling for the past couple of days over our house in Carterton and thought I must have been mistaken. But then today I spent my lunch duty at school watching a pair soaring in the sky above school going up high with the wind and then swooping down. What a magnificent site and one I would love to see again.

Awesome sight!

I was amazed on Monday (9/3/9) to be driving up the M40 near Oxford and see so many Kites in one place. I counted around twenty in a ten mile stretch of road. It was quite an incredible sight to see. I almost thought there must have been some kind of mass escape from a raptor centre.

Can anyone enlighten me? On match days at Cardiff City's Ninian Park, a truly huge and majestic bird can be seen circling high in the sky above, usually being harassed by one or two seagulls which swoop quite close to try and scare it off. Several people at the ground have commented that it is or might be a red kite. Are they correct? I am unfortunately in total ignorance when it comes to spotting our avian cousins.

Just got back from two fabulous days mountain biking around the Brecon Mountain Centre...the highlight was seeing a red kite soaring right above us in all its beauty. It was fearless, just floating a few meters overhead! I've always wanted to see one so was well made up. Big thanks to all those who have helped to save our national bird.

We are soon to be moving house to a village near Welshpool, and one of my saddest regrets was that we were leaving the Chiltern Red Kites, which we can virtually guarantee to see any time we want. I knew that there were some Red Kites in Wales, but I hadn't realised how far they had spread in recent years.I'm now a lot happier about moving, as I will still be able to see these beautiful raptors.

David Lewis. Now living in Oswestry.
For some time i lived in the Small Hamlet of Cefyn Canol, near Llansilin and spent many hours watching both Red Kites, and Buzzards, each offering in turn spectacular displays of courtship in flight. I was privileged to also see Red Legged Partridge, Gold crest, and Tree creepers. Now for the first time i will tell of the two sightings of a Large Catlike creature creeping out of the woods, and stealthily proceeding down to a little brook to drink. Not mentioned before as such things make one the subject of ridicule.

I sail every weekend at Clywedog near Llanidloes and it is rare not to see a red kite on the way, usually between the dam and the sailing club. The same stretch of road has a very high rabbit population and I have seen 2 young foxes there this week. Lots of sandmartins nest alongside the lake between Bwlch y Gle and the observation point on the hilltop - best seen from a boat, but also from the nature trail with binoculars.

Great fan of the Red Kite since I first saw one 35 yrs ago. When later in life I came to Uni in Lampeter, there was the added bonus of all those birds there as well. Brillaint! Now a great fan of kites, what joy when I spotted a pair last week 25 miles east of York. They are breeding. I am watching at a great distance with mega powerful binocs.

The success story of the red kite is amazing. Fifteen years ago we had to travel to Mid-Wales to catch a glimpse of a kite, amid great secrecy from the locals. Now they are a common place sight from our garden near Oxford and are a tourist attraction in Wales. How times have changed.

We went to the Elan Valley last week and saw loads of kites, especially over Claerwen dam, and several peregrines. As we drove back we saw plenty of kites, well into Herefordshire farmlands. This is a great conservation success story and the people involved deserve recognition for it.
