Bottlenose Dolphins

Cardigan Bay Dolphin

Last updated: 02 August 2007

Cardigan Bay is one of the last remaining places in the UK where bottlenose dolphins live. Find out more about these marine mammals and the best places to see them.

  • New Quay dolphin sightings...

  • Watch dolphins play off the New Quay coastline...

  • It's estimated that around 130 bottlenose dolphins are resident in Cardigan Bay. They grow to around 3.1 - 3.7 metres (10 - 12 foot) and usually live for up to 30 years (although some have been known to reach their 50th birthday!)

Dolphins are highly sociable mammals, living together in groups or "pods" and communicating through high-piched clicks or whistles. They hunt together too and if you're patient, you can sometimes catch one of these hunting packs as you watch from the shore. They can be high speed surface chases, with fish being thrown up into the air and acrobatic displays as the dolphins feed and play.

Dolphins can be seen from the shore along the length of Cardigan Bay - from Cardigan to the Dyfi Estuary. The best locations, however, tend to be in the south of Ceredigion and the best times of year are April - September.

One of the most popular viewpoints is New Quay. A crowd gathered on the village quayside is often a sign that the dolphins are in. They come quite close to the harbour wall, feeding around a reef not far from shore.

The hide overlooking Bird Rock at New Quay.

Another good watching place is the New Quay lookout, a renovated coastguard's hut overlooking Bird Rock... so even if you don't see a dolphin, you're likely to see all kinds of seabirds here. The Chough - Britain's rarest crow - is a frequent visitor to these cliffs, as well as Razorbills and Guillemots.

Janet Baxter is a professional photographer living in Borth and she's spent many watching hours waiting for that perfect dolphin shot (see the pictures above!). As well as New Quay, she suggests viewing from Mwnt, Ynys Lochtyn near Llangrannog and Aberporth. Wildlife boat trips also depart from a number of coastal resorts, including New Quay, Aberaeron and Aberystwyth.

Dolphins may be spotted ar any time of day but Janet's advice is to opt for early mornings and evenings during summer when there's increased boat traffic. Ideal conditions for spotting, she says, are during calm, sunny weather, at any state of the tide but often around or just after high tide.

The presence of the dolphins is one of the main reasons why Cardigan Bay has been chosen an European Special Area of Conservation. Harbour porpoise - which are smaller than dolphins - also live here, along with the Atlantic Grey Seal and scores of seabirds.

These animals are protected by law and boats using the area are urged to stick to local speed limits and an agreed code of conduct. If you're at sea and see either dolphin or porpoise, this is the advice given by the local council:

  • maintain a steady speed and course, or slow down gradually.
  • don't chase, manoeuvre erratically, turn towards or attempt to feed or touch them.
  • take extra care to avoid dolphins with their young.

I am so happy to say that i lived and worked in and around NQ for over twenty years, some of my happiest. i was lucky to have spent many truly beautiful hours before and after a nights work overlooking that magnificent bay, and, yes saw lots and lots of dolphins swimming, splashing and feeding near the fish factory. We thought that there were about a dozen, but many times i counted between twenty and twentyfive. oh, to have such lovely happy memories. also of the true friends i made there. truly.very good times.

I run the "Shearwater" charter boat from Pwllheli Marina. Whilst we undertake cruises for visitors and local people who wish to see the beautiful coast and wildlife, we also undertake the Photo-Identification of the local dolphin population on behalf of the "Seawatch Foundation". Each dolphin can be readily identified by the shape, cuts, scratches and bits missing from it's dorsal fin and we use powerful telephoto lenses to get an exacting shot. Every time we encounter dolphins, which is on more than 90% of our cruises we conduct photo ID work, complete a report and forward our results to the "Seawatch Foundation" w! ho are entrusted with monitoring the dolphins and other cetaceans around the coast of the UK.In 2007 we 'found' a new dolphin, i.e. one that had not been previously identified and did not appear in any database, but to surpass that, in 2008, we found a further 4! These now all appear in the "Seawatch" catalogue and we get more than a hint of satisfaction every time we see them.

I see bottlenose dolphins every year in Caernarfon bay, thats where I keep my boat. There is a pod of between 30 or 40 of them and they are usually somewhere between Caernarfon and Bardsey island. So Cardigan bay isnt the only place that have dolphins !!!

We went on a boat trip off Rhoscolyn for my Grandads 80th to find dolphins (I thought we wouldn't have any luck) but to my shock and amazement we saw a pod of dolphins with a young one displaying to us around our boat. I never thought that we would see such wonderful creatures so close to us. We spent an hour with them then waved goodbye till next year, (hopefully)

I swim with dolphins several times a year in Egypt. They are completely wild and free in the open sea and very friendly. It is so easy I don't know why everyone in the world doesn't just do it!

Saw 2 large dolphins in the bay in Cricieth on Tuesday 28th August 2007. They came right into the bay, and quite close to the shore as the tide was in. They were much larger then the pod of 7 bottle nose dolphins I photographed in Nefyn Bay back in 1993.

I am a dolphin number 1 fan, and recently me and my friend have been thinking of opening a dolphin sanctuary when we are older, because even though we think they should be kept in the wild, some people have kidnapped them from the wild and it is sort of a rescue center. I hope we succeed!

We went to Mwnt last year and saw wild bottlenosed dolphins, it was the most amazing experience that I have ever had! We saw about 6 of them together and another day we saw 3 teenage ones and the one jumped out the water a few metres, it was amazing! I wish to protect dolphins and whales expecially orcas and stop captivity programs making money out of the animals suffering. All animals were born free and should stay that way.

I've been lucky enough to see dolphins off of Cornwall and even Porpoises around the coast of Essex. It's great that we can all have the chance to see these wonderful creatures in their natural habitat. Many of the worlds captive dolphins are still wild caught in annual 'drive hunts'. The best 'specimens' are sold to dolphinariums whilst the rest are slaughtered for meat. I can't imagine anyone would want to swim with captive dolphins after seeing this.

Summer 2005, I swam with a dolphin in the bay, locally called the nudist beach, but also Traeth Ty Graig, between Penbryn and Llangrannog. I was swimming when a boat came into the jaws of the bay. We saw two dolphin following it out at sea; then I realised that my terrier was barking hysterically, saying "behind you!!" as best he could while running to hide under a rock. I turned, and there was a dolphin about 20 yards from me. It was good for me, but it took the dog a while to recover.

I recently stayed with my family at Lochtyn Lodge, Llangrannog. On a walk along the Lochtyn National Trust area my fiance and I spotted dolphins. It has been my dream to see them in the wild and I saw them on the eve of my birthday so it was extra special. We had a fantastic holiday and our two young sons enjoyed it immensely too. I can't wait to go back again. West Wales is a beautiful place and it shall remain fondly in my memories.

We were out in a boat in the best conditions ever last weekend around Barmouth and Shell Island. On the way up to shell island we slowed down and past a pod of Dolphins which was quite amazing (kept a wide berth of course!). On the way back another pod followed us. Nothing in 39 years and then twice in one day. Unforgettable.

I've been lucky enough to work with bottlenose dolphins here in the wild for the better part of 6 years. It's good to see so many people enjoying them in their natural environment. If you really love these animals please don't support the aquariums that hold them in captivity. Not only are most of them taken from the wild but life expectancy drops significantly for any dolphin born in captivity. There are many places that take you to see dolphins where they belong, in the wild. Please help keep that way.

Have been told buy friends that there are dolphins in the bay since Saturday 29/04/06. I went out in a boat today 04/05/06 with my friend Chris to do a little fishing, and we spotted 10 to 12 dolphins. We slowed the boat right down and they followed us for 20/30 minutes swiming right up and alongside the boat, even the bow of the boat. I see dolphins every year in Abersoch, and nearly always in the same place between the St Tudwal Island and the main land at Porthtocyn headland, (Porth Bach) where the old life boat shed is. The tide was ebbing and we diden't catch any fish. But we did get some good photos using a mobile phone and even got some good footage on video, if anybody would like to see the video, I could e-mail it to you.

I've seen the dolphins many times in New Quay, and agree that it is a wonderful experience. The best way to see them is via a boat trip, try one organised from the Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Centre. The best places to see dolphins that I know of are New Quay, Borth and all around the Cardigan island/Gwbert area. These places are also amazing for watching seals. Welsh waters are so clean they make excellent feeding and breeding grounds for marine life. *If you want to swim with Dolphins, don't support any of the Marine Zoos!!!* The ones in places like Florida and Portugal have taken these dolphins out of the wild to live a life of misery. Do you want to swim with sad dolphins whose lives are going to end in these swimming pools???

Specifically chose New Quay for the half term holiday after reading that there was a chance of seeing dolphins. It has been an ambition for our daughters, Jade and Jessamyn to see dolphins in the wild. Our patience and prayers were answered on Thursday 27 October. A glorious sunny day and the girls were paddling in the sea. Suddenly the dolphins appeared at approximately 2.30. We were so excited I forgot to note the time! We think there were five of them swimming from the south end of the beach towards the harbour. It was magnificent to see them jumping out of the water and so close to the beach too. We will treasure this wonderful sight forever!

I went to Aberystwyth uni and in my 3 years managed to see dolphins near the harbour and one even breaching by castle rocks. You can't beat seeing a dolphin in the wild (which is free) all it takes is patience and a bit of luck.

The best place to swim with dolphins is the Red Sea in Eilat, the Dolphins are free and yet they choose to come into the special area "Dolphin Cove" and swim with the people, there are specialist trainers present who look after the Dolphins whilst they are there to ensure that they are kept safe and well. This is a perfect union between man and Dolphin. Having swam there several times, and each time it is a wonderful experience. Snorkelling works better since air bubbles from diving tanks can scare the dolphins away or make them less interested as this is seen as aggression. I can remember playing with a mother dolphin and she disappeared only to return with a young baby dolphin and it was as though she was showing the baby off to me, such a moment I will never forget as I laughed under water with the two of them swimming with me.

We have a small boat and go out from Borth, Mackerel fishing. We have had the pleasure of seeing the Cardigan Bay Dolphins surfacing just yards from us on several occasions. Every time is as brilliant as the first. May, June and July have been the luckiest months for sightings over the last two years.

When I was much younger. I almost drowned near the mouth of the Halifax river. A dark colored thing came to me. I held on and it took me to the sand dunes near-by. I estimate that I was swimming down under the water at least 9ft. or so when it came up and rescued me. What a miracle that was. I was wondering if you ever heard of a porpoise or a dolpin living near that part of the ocean?

If you want to see porpoises in the area go to castle rocks, by the monument in Aberystwyth, there is often a couple there! Early mornings best chance for dolphins, often around the stone peir in the harbour mouth.

I've been swimming with dolphins once last year in Portugal at the Zoo Marie, they are amazing creatures and are fun to swim with, with all their fascinating tricks and communication skill. Also much cheaper than going to Florida and a lot cheaper.

I used to live in South Wales and me and my family often used to visit the bay just for me to go and see the dolphins there as I am a huge dolphin fan. Each time we visited the bay we would sometimes be lucky to see the magnificent ammals. I think that these creatures are special, and I have actually tried joining a dolphin campaign charity.

I feel we could learn a lot more from dolphins than we give them credit for. The news in New Zealand three weeks ago in protecting swimmers from a great white just goes to show how important these beutiful creatures are.

I am lucky enough to live at Penbryn in Cardigan Bay and have seen the dolphins on various occasions swimming just off Penbryn Beach and at various other locations locally, always an uplifting sight which is very special. On the last occasion I saw a mother and calf swimming together very close in, off the cliffs between Penbryn and Llangranog. The local Dolphins are very precious and we should all be aware of maintaining natures balance and beauty for the future.

I look forward to being a marine biologist.I hope everyone can learn to love dolphins. Heres a tip to help them: cut apart 6 pack rings on soda cans and create less water polution.

When I was on a boat trip at New Quay we were just about to go back into the harbour and we spotted a small group of dolphins swimming past and they were only a few yards from the boat, it was the first time I had seen a dolpin and what made it even better was that there was a calf with one of the dolphins.

I spent a week with my family at Sunnysands caravan park and we stayed in a caravan right on the beachfront. On Thursday evening (July 22)we watched 4 dolphins swimming along towards Barmouth. Local people told us they follow the same channel every evening at the same time. Great to see them so close up, who needs to go to huge sea worlds to watch them when the best place to see them is in the sea in Wales!

Cwm Tydu is the best place to see seals...I have seen them come within a few feet (literally) of the beach....and that was in the presence of several humans and their dogs! I saw one onec and raised my camera...it seemed to pose for me! Just be still, and be quiet, they will come.

When is the best time to come and see the dolphins because I love dolphins loads and I really want to see some.
    Mon Dec 1 20:57:18 2003

Howard Lawton from Huddersfield, West Yorks.
Being regular visitor to Cwm Tydu, just south of Newquay, the dolphins, atlantic seals and porpoise are very much a reason for our continued return. If just visiting, then Newquay sat having fish and chips or an icecream near the visitors centre is probably as good a spot as any!

Certainly if new to spotting there is always someone with sharper eyes' or more local knowledge to help. A pair of binoculars, not too powerful 8x is enough with a wide angle - say 50's - will help track them as they will travel long distances under water. Pre-focus the bino's to the general area and sight over the top to get aim, don't try to find them through the lens you will miss more than you see.

A trip on one of the boats from Newquay is worth the investment, the coast is magnificent and you will almost certainly spot the seals, maybe porpoise as well. The bull seals are the size of Mini's and spending a few hours on the cliffs round Cwm Tydu will bring a bull to within a few meters below you out of curiosity, and there is every chance of seeing the dolphins, but again Newquay has to be the top spot if it's the Dolphins you want to see.

I read about the Cardigan Bay dolphins a couple of years ago so we came to New Quay for a long weekend, sat on the pier and watched them play for what seemed like hours. Now we come down 3 or 4 times a year( a six-hour car journey) and when my lottery numbers come up, we'll be moving there!

Whilst walking back from Borth on Saturday at about half past 5, I watched for nearly an hour, from the cliff top by the Borth war memorial, the dolphins diving in and out of the water.....truly spectacular. They were about a couple of yards from the shore and so close u could see the shine on their wet skin.

    L J Jenkins from Cardigan
"We see bottlenose dolphins every 2 or 3 days throughout the summer and autumn near Cardigan Island - Gwbert, which is 3 miles from Cardigan. They like the sheltered waters around the island. The best spot is just to the east of Cardigan Island. There were a dozen dolphins there 2 days ago and 6 dolphins two days before that."

    Russ Balmer from Bewdley
"I have seen the Dolphins twice recently... on Monday 8th September, 200 yards out from the Harbour at Aber and on Tuesday the 26th August, at the top of Barmouth Prom. Great to see them and less expensive than going to Florida."
