Smithfield Traffic Plan

Proposed Trun Road Re-routing signage drawing

In November 2007 Capita Symonds Ltd provided a highway operational analysis to supplement the outline planning application for the proposed redevelopment of Welshpool's Smithfield Livestock Market. Read extracts from the report and take a look at the plans sent to us by Powys Council in February 2008. If you are from Welshpool or know the town well tell us what you think of the proposals. Thanks for nothing Mel, yet another NIMBY suggestion to shove all the traffic onto the back road (Union St/Brook St) where I live, your not a Salop Road resident by any chance? the one way system is a great idea & will cut down on traffic volume & speed on the back road, my kids may even be able to enjoy going out in the garden without choking exhaust fumes & the continual noise of vehicles making conversation impossible,

Mel Lewis, Welshpool.
I cant see why planners have to make things so difficult and complicated. How long will it be before there will be moaning about HGVs damaging building up Salop Rd, conjestion etc, etc, etc,.It would be so much simpler to run the new road straight up from the station island through the smithfield keeping tight to the left hand side, over the canal onto the Spar car park (still keeping to the left) and toward the exit bear to the right and up the back lane. close off Church Bank to stop through traffic up Salop Rd.Pedestrionise the road from the Cross to the Spar,Close Mill Lane from the Canal Bridge to Cae Glas. and Build what you like on the old smithfield. Simple ??? and more than likley a lot cheaper !!!.

Oh give the whinging a rest Paul!Serious changes are needed in Welshpool. Living and travelling in and around Welshpool on a daily basis, I know how bad the traffic can be.These new plans are obviously for our benefit, otherwise none of our "genius planners" would advise them - people like you would certainly be complaining if we had none!Bring on the development as Welshpool needs a good shake-up!

The problem with Welshpool, and indeed much of the surrounding area, is Newtown; not Newtown itself of course, but the simple fact that successive 'Town Planners' (now there is an oxymoron if ever there was one) have managed to avoid building the Newtown bypass. Following traditional ‘Local Government’ (another oxymoron) philosophy of …..lets not just get it wrong, lets get it seriously wrong , and even better, make it impossible for anyone to ‘get it right’ at a later date….. our genius planners of the past arranged for the best, and possibly the only, route for the Newtown bypass to be developed for industry and housing. Serious traffic constipation is now the norm on Friday and Sunday afternoons in the summer. Bypass Newtown, Pant and Llanymynech first, and then think about developing Welshpool. I know, I know; different departments, different funding, one costs money whilst the other turns a profit …. and to do anything in the right, or sensible, order is strictly against government (central, regional, and/or local) policy …. so no urgently needed bypass construction, just more development to increase congestion; oh well, lets not just get it wrong, lets ………………..deja vu!
