Come and visit the Montgomery Canal in Welshpool- see the town lock and wharf. Upgraded footpaths, new seats and new information boards. The canal is 35 miles long from the outskirts of Newtown to Welsh Frankton.Canadian style canoes available to borrow and lots of events. Please see the website

Yet again I am saying to the people of Welshpool and the surrounding areas get behind your sports teams i.e. footbll ,bowls, rugby, etc, and invest in the youth because their are they are the people who will take their respective sports into an new era .

I am looking for ancestors from the Welshpool area. My great grandma Alice Caroline Jones was born in Welshpool in 1859. At some point she came to Oldham in Lancashire and was married to my great grandad James Thorley in 1878. I am trying to find out a bit more about her parents and about the district she came from. Her father, Thomas, was a butcher but I don't have any dates for him or a name for her mother. I would be grateful of any information or clues of how to find it.

I've lived at Deep Cutting House for the last twenty years. Your father was probably helping to dig out the route for the canal, the cutting was made through here, next to my house, to keep the canal level and it passes on up to Burgedin Locks and on to Pool Quay and beyond. Unfortunately the family who own the old farm buildings next door to our farmhouse have sold them for redevelopment and a disgusting new bungalow has been constructed here instead.

My mother was born 1/11/1909 in Deep Cutting, Guildsfield (Without) R.D. Her father was described as a Canal Labourer.
Can anyone shed any light on "Deep Cutting" and what her father was likely to be doing.

I have recently started a Bed and Breakfast Business in Trewern near Welshpool. I have been graded by the Welsh Tourist Board 4 Star, however my guests are struggling to find places to eat locally. They do not want to travel to Shrewsbury for food. They want to be in Welshpool and surrounding area. Please can Welshpool have some wonderful support of Catering Establishments (not fast food.My Guests want to be in Wine and Dine flavour with reasonable prices. A Barge Restraunt on the Montgomery Canal for example. There is so much that could be done business wise in Welshpool. Just take a look at Padstow Cornwall how%2! 0one famous TV Chef can turn a town around and charge vast amounts for Fish and Chips.
My Guests all want a return visit next year so I would like to see improvement with eating availability in Welshpool Area.

I have a relative born in 1841 in Oswestry England, but I have been told that it was at some time part of Wales. Does anyone know when the borders changed?

The Welshpool football team are playing well but still the attendances are pittiful, support your LOCAL team people!! The staff at the old station are really friendly, specially the younger staff.

I think it is about time that the people and the surrounding areas get out and supporting the local sporting associations such as Welshpool FC, Welshpool RUFC, Welshpool hockey and tennis club, Guildsfield FC, because do they realise if you are behind the teams it will bring success into the area such as buisness spin offs and also bring in much needed cash revenue with the influx of many people who have come to spend money and hopefullly stay in the local hotels and bed and breakfast, who hopefully will be impressed by the hospitality they have received and come back and enjoy themselves.
