Welshpool will always be my home. My family have grown up and still live in and around Welshpool although I live in Chicago. My heart will always be there. Growing up with little money my mother and father always made the best with what we had. The enchanting woods where the fairies lived to the castle park where the headless horseman road at night and all the other fables we grow up with. Our nights where taken up with walks all over the countryside, where climbing over a stile was an adventure or swinging on the limbs of the trees. Market day and the trip to the Smithfield.

I've just discovered that one of my ancestors was an Innkeeper in Welshpool in 1901. The census says the address is 8 High Street and I think this is now The Buttery Restaurant. Could anyone tell me what the pub was called? My ancestor was Hugh Williams and lived there with his wife Jane and their neice Matilda. Thanks

At The Beggining Of 1997 I went to The Maesydre to see Welshpool VS Conwy United. I bumped into Neil, Duncan and Alan Pearce. I quickly learn't a lot of the members of The Welshpool Team like Neil Salisbury, Damon Russell, Mal Esfandarinia, Neil Price, Carwyn Arnold, Jason Yates and Phil Bates. I was talking to Alan Pearce and he told me that there was going to be a live game on the next day between Barry Town and Caernarfon at Jenner Park . I tuned in the next day to find it was live on BBC Wales presented by John Hardy and Mark Aizlewood. Barry Town won 5-2 with 2 goals from Player/Manager Gary Barnett. I also went to games at the Maesydre against Ton Pentre, Flint Town, Newtown, Porthmadog and Inter CableTel. Me and Dad were at The Maesydre the day The Grand National was evacuated due to a bomb scare.

The game against Porthmadog was going to have highlights on Wales On Saturday. Gareth Cadwallader was interviewed in front of the stand before kick off. A lot of the lads I was in school with were having a kick about behing the goal but when they scored they suddenly stoped and looked. I think the 3rd goal was when The Porthmadog player ran all the way round Neil Salisbury to score. as that was happening the skinny 14 year old lad sitting on the right hand bench of the stand was me; if you ever see footage of this. I had a kick about after The Inter CableTel game which was the last game of the season. I scored and this other supporter joked "It's his 20th goal of the season!" In the summers of 1997 and 1998 BBC Wales televised the 2nd legs live of Barry Town European Cup Qualifiers against Dynamo Kiev. It was the first time I had seen players like Shevchenko and Rebrov; the latter year Darren ryan got sent off early on. They had bought Eifion Willians fron Caernarfon for a Welsh League Record Fee of £25,000. Gareth Cadwallader had to step down as Welshpool Manager in the summer of 1997. Clive McNamee was named the new manager and Neil Salisbury was sold to Oswestry and was replaced by Russell Cadwallader. Top Goalscorers Damon Russell and Jason Yates were sold to Newtown and Welshpool were relegated after an appaling season!

I will be traveling to Welshpool in October, and was wondering if any distant relatives might be there. My great grandfather Walter Jones was born in Llanfair, Welshpool, on August 25, 1859, and died on July 4, 1936 in the United States. He lived in Illinois for a time, then in Kansas. He emigrated to the United States in 1875.

I was very interested to see the comment of G.Richards : )!!!!!We have been attemting to get down to Welshpool this year but with one thing and another it hasn't happened yet. I was extremely upset and concerned tonight to see the floods in Powys and my heart goes out to everyone. We are in the flood areas and although personally i wasnt affected by the floods last year a lot of people I know were. Perhaps the drains everywhere must be a priority these days.

The whole of Welshpool is one big car park! people park wherever they want to, on double yellow lines, dropped kerbs, Half on the pavements fully on the pavements, double park on the main street, and Berriew street and the same on the housing estates. The police are a joke, they drive past in their cars and look the other way. The traffic warden patrols now and again and books one or two by the spar then disappears for weeks on end.(and that is not fair to book some and then ignore the majority)

In the 90's I remember going to see Welshpool Town FC play at The Maesydre because there was talk about them being promoted to The League Of Wales. The team played in black shorts and white shirts with Patrick on them which were referred to as 'The Patrick Shirts.' They struggled in a division that was dominated by Barry Town but The Maesydre was always a good time on a Saturday Afternoon. I remember a lot of the players like Neil Salisbury, Phil Bates, Steve Hamner, Marcus Lokier, Trevor Clarke, Jason Yates and Damon Russell who was the Steve Rogers of the 90's except we called him "Damo" and not "Jolly." When Barry Town came to The Maesydre in 1997 I met Gary Barnett!

Like many I moved away to continue my education and havn't moved back, though i return to visit family on a regular basis. Having read these comments I would echo the phrase "the grass is always greener" I used to live in 'Tesco Town' (Addlestone) and the idea that one store can have such an influence on a town is frightening. I would urge caution to those who wish for such things. To those who talk of the councillors preventing change, you have the power to vote them out of office. Welshpool like many small towns across England and Wales has its problems in that it cannot please all the residents all the time. Change is inevitable but remember the people of the town make the town what it is.

This year Four Crosses Young Farmers are celebrating their 75th year. They happen to be the oldest club in the county and even older than county's itself, as some of the members went off and formed other clubs in the area which eventually formed the Montgomeryshire YFC county now. We are doing lots of events and fundraising and have a big bash on the 12th July 08.

As a small boy I holidayed just outside welshpool my grand mother was from there and I believe I still have some relatives there (bennetts )but I always remember the accents of the locals and the beautiful country side. From reading this it sounds things have changed since then but things do change some for better some for worse I will always have fond memories of your town and god willing I will see it again and so will my children and hope they will get the same sense of being of Welsh origin and proud of welshpool for better or worse.

I've lived in Welshpool for 4 years now and welshpool has just been getting boring. since the polish came here there has been many fights and also people have been raped! why want the police do anything about it welshpool used to be a beautiful place what has happened. there are also people who park on double yellow lines where eva they want did they steal there licence or is it 'oh look double yelow lines i can park here'. the police just walk straight past them. i was sitting on my wall wen the police came to look at our car out side our house it was off the road for 3 days because it needed tax we already sent it off and was waiting for it to come through. the police told me that if its not taxed in the next few days that it will have to be taken away. It was out side our own house we havent even been out in it so wat was the proble! there is not alot to do for teenagers like me around welshpool but if they do put something up like the skate park and the atsro turf up oldford they just get recked anyway. the astro turf has been finished now for nearly a year or so and the nets have been pulled of the baskets, there is graffiti on the sides and older people such as 18 year olds go down there just to sell drugs for example. they have put a camara up there now but why didnt they ! think of it in the first place.

Hi,apart from my brothers and sisters all my family live in Wales. My Nan & Grandad Gladys and John Eilledge Lived in Keepers Cottage where all my Aunts and Uncles were brought up. My Nan who was called Bennett before she married and her Fathermy Great Grandad Samuel Bennet lived at the Chapel House in Groes. My Aunts & Uncles and cousins still live in Welshpool. My dad was Trevor Eilledge and came to Barnsley after the war. Tragically he passed away when I was only 5 but my Mum used the Welsh words Bora Da , Prinhown da & Nostar to keep that little bit of the celt in us and I ve! always remenbered it and use it to my Welsh customers who ring up and talk to me in my occupation as a customer service advisor.

The new development is going to be a complete waste of time if current councilors have anything to do with it. So far I've a heard there will be a Comet / Currys type shop, a pet store and a carpet store along with a few others. That puts out of business the pet store and TV shop in town and hardly anyone will use the new ones. Shrewsbury & Newtown are 20 minutes away, why have the same shops (only smaller) as the nearest two towns?? There will probably be a Tescos there as well! How many supermarkets does a tiny town need?

One of the major more recent historic sites around Welshpool it is at Leighton and is Leighton Hall (grade 1 listed) and the Farm Buildings. The Hall and farm were built for a Liverpool millionaire industrialist and banker John Naylor between 1850 and 1856 and in its day the farm was second only to Windsor Great Farm in its innovative design. John Naylor who was one of the richest men in Victorian England was given Leighton as a wedding present. The Hall was designed and built by Liverpool architect W H Gee a student of Pugin and parts of the interior resemble the Palace of Westminster. The gardens now sadly much negl! ected were featured in Country Life in June 1991 when they were still a sight to behold. The remnants of whole estate can still be seen and the farm buildings are still in use albeit not in the style of the original. The funicular railway that ran from the farm to the Tank and was reputed to be used for carrying animal waste has long gone but the Old Cable House is still there. CADW have a useful report on the Hall & the Farm which is worth looking at if you're interested.

Did you know that Franklin Delano Roosevelt spent most of the summers of his young life in Welshpool, Canada? This maratime village on Campobello Island is physically nearer the State of Maine than the Province of New Brunswick, to which it belongs. Founded by the Owens of Mongomershire in the late 1700's, it later became the summer home of James and Sara Roosevelt, parents of the future President.

Lived in welshpool since 1984 my kids were born here and go to school here but the last few years the town has gone down hill. stupid little boys drinking in the streets trying to look hard [they should move to a big city were they be out of their depth] drug dealers pushing on the streets wich i have seen. the shops are poor mainly charity shops/estate agents the town should get rid of the old councilers who want to keep the town in the 50s and dont want change.

Moved into welshpool a few years ago, my views welshpool as a teenager are none other than that the people in the pubs my age are difficult to socialise with, when trouble is caused doormen/bouncers are biased, again nothing for teenagers to do, therefore they turn to drink/drugs,and this would be your answer for the crimes being committed. They couldn't find me a flat for 2 years of being homeless,in welshpool because didnt want to be distant from family.

I called at the Spar last Friday 6:30pm, parked in the pay & display car park. A group of men were just in the middle of a fight when interupted by police arriving in two marked cars, after a short discussion one man decided he had heard enough and ran off, the police officers then left, missing a golden opportunity to issue five or six parking tickets for the cars parked on the double yellow lines outside the Spar shop. When I came out of the Spar the Powys police helicopter flew over and even this multi million pound piece of high tec kit missed the chance of a multi crime solving chance, not to mention the glamour of "Police camera action". Perhaps this crime situation needs the help of MI5/6 or even the SAS.

Lived in welshpool for 5 years through my teens. never really made many friends because every one is clicky, theres nothing to do and puplic transport is dire, the youth in that area are horrible and the old people look at you like rubbish, thinking about welshpool makes me angry its a very small minded town and most people (not everyone) dont like you unless you were born and bred in the area...as for people like me and eastern europeans we dont have a chance because everyone hates us because we're from somewhere else. I dont know how many people actually dont work but it must be the highest unemployment rate ever and they blame the polish for takin jobs, they are just grateful to take the jobs...a shame really did meet a few nice people along the way

I was born in Welshpool nearly 43 years ago as it was my mums home town and my father had been posted by the RAF to Malta. I was christened at ST Marys and born in Victoria Hospital. After leaving we went back to visit my grand parents during the holidays, My grandad owned the Army and Navy Store, W H Evans and lived up Church Street in the an old vicarage called Kingswood, now owned by the Jehovah Witnesses, I think. My grandad, Pop, was affectionatel known as "Bill the Cobbler" One of my cousins still lives in Forden.I had great times there as a kid with my two brothers and cousins Judi and ! Lesley. We were right next to the Powis Castle Grounds so had the biggest back garden in the world. Used to go sledging down the kill opposite the church. Great times. My parents did retire there temporarly living in Brynfa but decided to move back to Bedforshire to me nearer to us lot.I wouldn't like to live there as a young person but it is a stunningly beautiful part of the country and I've got some great memorys of the town.

Message for Karen Parr (earlier entry). You said you lived here 24 years ago? Please get in touch. By the way I lived in the West Midlands for 7 years wich is such an impersonal place. Yes, its true sometimes Welshpool is a bit small minded but there's nothing like seeing people you know when you're out and about, rather that being a nobody in a big city. I count myself lucky to live in such a pretty part of the world.

Welshpool is a great little town, it still has some reasonable and quality local shops, butchers, fishmonger, fruit and veg. I want to boycott the development down by the canal... we know it will not drum up enough trade and will end up a dive. Why don't people make the most of the wonderful surrounding countryside. The canal, powis park and the endless wandering of footpaths (Offas dyke, ann griffiths way severn way) etc etc etc.I agree with many others that young people need to remember/learn to make their own entertainment and get some satisfaction from giving back to thier community

Do you see any of the lads I mentioned? I suppose they all have kids themselves now. The one thing I enjoyed in welshpool was how tight the friendships were.

I used to live in Welshpool in the late sixties to late seventies what a great town it was then. I lived in the Gungrog Rd area had some great friends: the proctor lads, gary davies, lloyd chaney, harry smith, the owens brothers. We used to play football down the high school all the time from early morning until night fall we never got into trouble or looked for it. We were never like yhe youngsters of today who can't get off their backsides and make their own fun. They think something should be organised for them. They are too happy for someone else to motivate them.

Why isn't anything ever said about the chavs in Welshpool who walk around with their beer thinking they are hard at ages of 12 and the police just ignore it? We don't do anybody any harm we just meet up to meet new people or just talk didnt you ever do that?

Estranged Welshpuddlian at heart
I was born in welshpool 51 years ago. I left to find brighter lights as soon as I was old enough. There never was much to do in Welshpool other than drinking... plenty of pubs. Now that all my family have either moved out too or died, I'm left without a 'base'in town & realise how much I am actually emotionally attached to the place and my roots. I'm now realising that it's not such a bad place to have been brought up after all & I have many happy memories of playing tree camps in the park and in Bron Y Buckley woods.

I was born in England but moved to Welshpool at an early age. I spent a fabulous 20 or so years there before moving to Australia. I have been back a few times for a visit and as always had a fabulous time with my old friends. It is quite strange reading all the reviews on what people think of the town and how it seems to have changed since I left in 1991. I will always love Welshpool and have some very fond memories of the town, my upbringing and the Welshpool people. Hi to everyone and miss you heaps. Drop me an email if you get chance.

I lived in Welshpool for 2 years, when I decided to see how people in the west are and how is their way of living.I worked in a nursing home in Welshpool,a hard job in my opinion but I menaged very well.I live now back to my country - east european country(since last year) and when I left welshpool I cried because I really liked there and I met good people at my work nd of course I met also not very nice people but these kind of people are in every contry.Somebody said about us taking jobs and renting flats or houses, but no offence to you, local people don't work 40 or more than 40 hours per week and it was short staff most of the time so why your young people don't go to work there? And as for the renting we paid everything just like you.I miss sometimes the time I've spent there, and also a very good thing that happened is that I learnt English very well but not perfect. I wish you all the best.

Note to Bryan - I have no problem with the eastern europeans, however it is a fact that they are taking jobs and houses in and around Welshpool and the locals are having to move out of town.I have also lived here for over 20 years and I still do! In fact I was outside the Spar last weekend and there were drunks sitting on the benches with boxes of beer - and they were eastern europeans. (So actually I do have my facts right!)You said in your first comment "get off your buts and help yourselves for goodness sake!" - Any suggestions??

Note for MattI think you are the one that needs to get his facts right. I lived in Welshpool for over twenty years, thankfully i no longer do. I know the people that sit all day outside the spar, all local. I also know the mess the youth club youths used to make in the grandstand at the rec as I had to clean it out on a Saturday morning. That was long before any eastern europeans came to town. How about you getting your facts right before you reply to messages such as mine.

I really like Welshpool. I moved from Birmingham about six months ago and the change is so different. Fair enough, there isn't that much to do in Welshpool, but even if there was then people wouldn't use it. The council have put leaflets in the school inviting people to put their ideas forward, but nobody cares. As for the Polish people, they have every right to be here and people getting all arieated about it, really should get a life. Yu know, if you moved to spain, you'd be offended if you didn't get accepted instantly, and i know for a fact that the Polish people are trying to learn English, the hardest language to learn. I do like welshpool though.

...unlike youths in welshpool the eastern europeans have been nothing but pleasant to me since they arrived. Maybe because i'm not a drunken lout and speak to them as human beings not aliens. Perhaps if more people in welshpool took this view it would be a better place to live for all concerned because like it or not places change, i'm just sorry its taken welshpool this long.

Note to Bryan - do you really think youngsters of today would do what you have just listed? I think you need a reality check! Do you know for a fact that none of the eastern europeans don't get drunk? I think your wrong here too! There isn't enough for the youngsters, and the constant increase of eastern europeans is a problem -taking many jobs and houses from the locals, who are having to move out of their hometown to earn and make a living. I suggest you get your facts straight before writing!

The main complaints I have noted are there is nothing for youngsters to do and the influx of immigrants. If the youngsters want something to do go and cut the churchyard, do some shopping for the elderly, pick litter of the streets. When they had a youth club all they did was run around outside causing damage to the recreation area. Most don't deserve anything meaningful to do.As for the immigrants where would Welshpool employers be without them, because the locals don't want work. How many Eastern Europeans do you see drunk outside the Spar everyday, none, they are all locals. How many of those people have ever had jobs, hardly any. Some of your comments make me laugh. Get off your buts and help yourselves for goodness sake.

I have lived in welshpool for 17 years, since I was 6. At first it was a great town as far as i can remember from what my parents said, there were many more shops, not just charity shops! As i grew into my teens there was never anything to do, just hang around and cause problems. What happened to the youth club down maesydre? I moved to Newtown at 19 for a couple of years, and the difference is hughe. The size of the highstreet is not bigger than ours, and the choice of shops, there's dp's/burtons, peacocks, newlook etc, and what do we have? CHARITY SHOPS! Bring on Tescos and the new shopping development on the old Smithfield. Bring in new members on the town council, so that new ideas for the town stop being rejected! We need some life in this place if the younger generation are going to stick around and not move away, as this place is becoming a ghost town and full of pensioners and immigrants. Something needs to be done to this town in its pretty surroundings.

I love Welshpool and it's sometimes quirky ways. I meet many people from day to day and I really enjoy the company of the Welshpool people. It's regrettable that there are so many comments from the younger generation about the lack of facilities for them, but I do feel that they have a valid point!Welshpool is a beautiful place and only if the powers that be would recognise this and invest in tourism the whole community would benefit......

I lived in Welshpool for seven years as a child in the 1940s and 50s. I went back many times thereafter before emigrating in 1985.The little town will always be in my heart, and so will the gentle border countryside, as it rises gradually towards the Welsh Mountains. Powys Paradwys Cymru (sorry if my Welsh is wonky), I'll always love you, even though I don't have a drop of Welsh blood.

I have visited Welshpool all my life. I am 49 now, my dad was born there, his grandparents were Jones. They had a cottage on the main road into Welshpool which has gone now, he left there when he was 12 I think. He had 2 brothers who were born there too. I love the place, it's friendly, the scenery is lovely, and I always visit the castle. I would love to hear from someone who may know something about my dad's family there, I always have a drink in the mermaid. What a shame the livestock market is closing, that fetched a great atmosphere to the town, especially when I was a child. Keep the place in its natural state there's not many left.

Moved here a couple of years back and am now married and have a baby girl. Having lived in Shrewsbury and Plymouth I am definitely happier bringing up my little one here than anywhere else. The scenery and surrounding areas are beautiful, the people are generally friendly and the shops are still local. I see a few complaints that there's not much to do but tbh if money's tight there's not much to do anywhere. Kids in every town and city hang out next to the shops. Haven't really noticed any problem with foreign workers coming over, those that I've met are polite and friendly and employers that I talk to have nothing bad to say about how hard they work. Let's just hope they don't build a Tesco when the livestock market moves!!

Mo Ok from Welshpool
Its a nice little town in beautiful surroundings. It may not be somewhere where kids like to live but its certainly somewhere where you'd want to raise your kids. Good schools and a safe environment. The local people are friendly and there a vibrant pub scene. The club (singular) isn't so lively. The area has been let down recently by poor governing by out elected 'officials'. Roads aren't anywhere near the standard they demand, hence the high ratio of accidents. Our miniscule police force might as well retire for all the use they are. And the huge influx of Polish/Eastern European workers into the area has left a bad taste in some locals' mouths...its hard to blame them when the government does little or nothing to stop them. The town centre is in urgent need of investment as well, but with large retail centres such as Wrexham, Chester, Shrewsbury and Telford all reasonably close, new investment seems unlikely.

The people were very friendly, the butchers just up from the Cinema was fantastic (can't remember what they're called!) and there is a small family-run restaurant near the Spar that is simply amazing. I have visited and stayed in Welshpool for the last 28 years eventually moving here permanently four years ago. If people who have always lived here believe it is a haven for drug addicts and muggers they should try living in some areas of the Midlands. Welshpool is one of the most beautiful areas in the UK the scenery is magnificent and the people extremely kind and thoughtful. What people who live here should say is 'No' to any more charity shops, including the one that has yet to open and looking at what the council are charging for business rates that is obviously putting off other retailers from moving here.

I agree and disagree with a lot of comments on here. I've lived in Welshpool all my life and its always been a great place to live until the last few years. The massive influx of immigrants has not helped in the slightest, ok, they might work hard but they are taking jobs and housing from local people who are having to move from thier home town just to make a living. Also what about local resources such as dentists, doctors, and the like, its almost impossible to get a doctors appointment unless you want to wait a couple of weeks. I cant get into a dentist and neither can my children. Its ridiculous. I often think of the future here for my kids and its pretty bleak at the moment.Too many charity shops and not enough support for small local businesses which were the crux of the town years ago.

I think Welshpool is a town which is maybe average at the moment, but will be moving upwards over the next few years. I have spoken to lots of people who now cant afford to buy houses in shrewsbury who are now buying in welshpool. Yes there are too many charity shops, but the main street is really pretty- it just needs a few delis etc, like ludlow. - The Royal Oak has now been done up and this is a great place to eat and drink with real freindly atmosphere. I dont understand the comments about all the constant muggings in the town etc; I think these are a bit of an exageration, there are occasional problems, but these descriptions make it sound like some ghetto in a city centre, which it definitely is not. As regards to immigrants, yes there are a few, but having worked alongside some, they are not here to obtain benefits, but to work hard. I think its time to stop moaning and make the most of what we have.

Umm, to support the opinion of others, i have to say i've never encountered such friendly people, i say this of the back of living in several countries around the globe. The town its self i have to note is rapidly becoming forgotten about. The existence of things for people to do are virtually non-existent, so this there for only equates to one thing, people do not stay for long. An investment of any kind into the town itself i feel would be gratefully recieved and appreciated by the local contingent, yes there is a large influx of overseas workers, why, they are willing to do the work that others are not so willing to do.The local authorities must ask themselves the question of where they would like to be when all around them are looking at the the future. Invest in the town and the people will invest in its future.

I grew up near Welshpool and trips to town were fun. The market was bustling and I liked seeing all the old characters. These days, I can't bear the place. The character has been ripped out and the whole place sanitised. And for what? Eight charity shops, a string or estate agents selling overpriced dumps and a bunch of unfriendly immigrants! Oh, and let's not forget the rubbish takeaway joints.
I've never found the locals particularly friendly either. Welshpool has nothing to offer, it's finished!!

I was born and brought up in Welshpool. I moved away to University and then my career's kept my away ever since. That's the problem that Welshpool has to face, the fact that the majority of school leavers have no option other than to move away to find work. The biggest mistake ever was the redevelopment of the Oldford Estate. It brought in a huge raft of incomers from the Midlands which changed the demographic of Welshpool faster than the town could cope with. It's a lovely town, don't knock it so much, you just have to remember that the community aspect is the only way in which it will happen in a small town with a low income. Or move to the South East and see how much you miss the place!

Welshpool has nothing to offer to teenagers that is why most of them are takeing drugs .When i was younger they had flats in Oldford estate and everyone got one with everyone but now they have changed to council houses most people never talk to each other it is like the spirit of oldford has gone with the houses most people are afraid to leave their house after dark as they might get stabbed. I have lived in Welshpool since i was born(28), it is a busy little market town with not much to offer, the problem we have is whenever a tidy proposal come forward from developers the councillors feel its is their duty to stop the development of the town, just look at other neighbouring towns like Newtown and Oswestry ten years ago they were pretty much the same size as Welshpool and now they are growing to nearly double the size with better shops, facilities, plenty for the youths of the area to take part in, and welshpool is left in the 80s.

I lived near Welshpool for 23 years until I moved away 4 years ago. I loved living there. There wasn't much to do but the people were so friendly that nights out were the best in the area. Can't believe what everyone is saying on this site - about it going down hill. It's such a shame. I still enjoy visiting Welshpool because as you drive towards it from the Midlands, the countryside is so stunning that you feel like everything is lifted from your shoulders.

i don't think its fair to say that welshpool is not good for teenagers, all you have to do is look for the right place. There is a skate park here and also a leisure center. I agree there is alot of alcohol violence etc. but that's only happened in recent years. there is alot of good things about welshpoool, like the amount of jobs there is. there is a major estate for companies and the biggest sheep market in wales. people can only see the bad things, or maybe thats all they want to see.

I have lived in Welshpool all my life, and what used to be a nice, friendly town is fastly declining. Welshpool itself is a lovely town which is lucky to have a few attractions such as Powys Castle. On the whole I like living in Welshpool, mostly due to the friendly locals, but there are too many problems all at once! Welshpool seems to be the hot spot for charity shops! There must be at least 8 charity shops in Welshpool, and it is driving the locals away to shop.
I think it is quite sad to think that some of the locals who have lived in Welshpool for years, do not like to go out in Welshpool after dark for all the violence and crime caused by gangs of every night drinkers.
To me -its a great shame! Hopefully someday it may improve??

Welshpool is a reasonably quiet town with 'some' excellent shops. It has immense potential but is still very underdeveloped, a jewel in Wales, or potentially a dimaond, rough and uncut. But where are all the little specialist shops? I hope Welshpool never becomes another High Street clone. There are a few really good eating places but we could do with more 'family' restaurants, Welshpool is fast becoming a middle age drinking town...what's with all the middle age drunks out on all the pavements on every bank holiday? Also recently we have become the charity shop capital! However Welshpool on the whole is a wonderful place but we all need to look at how the town is developing, initiate change, embrace it, even the new and diverse mix of nationalities. Being dual nationality French-British I am amazed at how little the Welsh language is used at the Gateway to Wales! I for one would love to hear more, to read more signs in Welsh, be greeted in shops, what a beautiful language, another plus for Welshpool but...where is it

I came to welshpool when all the girls were beautiful and I was a lovely boy!!, some 45 years ago, and have spent many days, mainly happy days, serving the people of the town enjoying jokes and fun with them .I happen to believe that laughter IS the best medicine.Problem with that theory is that judging by the absence of humour a lot of folk will end up unwell. Or, more likely, I am getting bloody old. Carry on folk enjoy this lovely old town and the wonderful setting its in. sure beats the Gobi desert.

Lived in Welshpool all my life but being in a wheelchair makes living here a lot more difficult, can't get into a lot of the places in town. On the bright side though there is some decent pubs to go to and the locals are quite friendly.

I have lived in Welshpool for 8 years now I came here since i was 5. As i grew older about 10 i realized I loved swimming at the flash.I also go to welshpool high school which is ok I suppose. I do wish they could make a ice rink when they redevelop the Smithfield market so that there is something for young people to do!

As people insist on the point which the town is boring for young locals,Its true.
Nevertheless,There is a peacefully tranquil atmosphere which eased my tired soul.
For me,I'd really like to emphasize that i could enjoy the stay in the small town for roughly one year, even though I raised up in Tokyo. My favorite place in welshpool is no doubt Powis castle.

I worked at the coffee pot cafe in 1980. Stayed for a year and loved the place. Spent a lot of time in the pub next to it. Can't remember its name but the barman was called Dave.

I lived in Pontrobert - just outside Welshpool - since I was 4. I then moved away when I joined the Navy at 17 and have now moved back at 27 with my two young children. Although Welshpool itself does seem to have a very limited amount of retail outlets compared to Portsmouth (where I moved back from) there is always a bus or train or you can drive to Shrewsbury which is only 20 miles and has all the bustle of a busy town and then when you come back to Welshpool, you really do remember what country life is all about, especially when all the farmers markets are going on!! I love the area and find everybody is so much friendlier than most other places I've visited.

My husband, daughter and myself have cycled for 20 years on the Criggan estate. My daughter later rode her horse there. Why can we not continue to do this? I'm 64, my husband 84. Still need to keep fit. It's location is through the Breidden forest, past old mills hill.

How can you say Welshpool is boring? When we were younger, Mam and Dad brought us to Welshpool every weekend and pretty much every half term holiday. We loved it, especially paddling and swimming in the River Severn. We stayed on the Severn Caravan site with a working farm - there was so much do. I really miss it now. Hope to come back soon.

I've been living in Welshpool for 60 years now and there is only one good thing about it - the people. They are friendly and always say "hi" or "Nice Day isn't it". However, there isn't really much else to do their. You soon get bored of the few available facilities. However, if you are looking to visit for a few days, then I am sure you will find Welshpool very enjoyable.

First visited here in '77 - fantastic, laid back, great on market days. Good pubs, friendly 'hippie' type people, especially at The Vaults (long since gone, it was the best pub in town). Also gone are The White Lion, The Eagles, The Angel went and came back. Been living here 20 years now, and witnessed the decline of the place, too many charity shops forcing 'proper' and local businesses to give up - I think this new development planned for the Smithfield will kill off even more local shops. Also, the town has gone 'rough' compared to when I first came here. You don't see dads in the pubs with their sons as much these days, the whole place could do with a facelift, jobs are hard to find, partly due to the immigrant workforce. The local paper has announced that there could be 1000 more immigrant workers arriving in the future, which will make them one in seven of the population. A shame for the future of the town and its local inhabitants - no wonder youngsters are moving away.

Welshpool is a very boring place and has hardly anything to do. I would love to move out of Welshpool to somewhere which has loads of clothes shops and better pubs. The thing that I would miss about Welshpool is the friendly people.

I came to Welshpool twice: In '97 for a month and '94 for 10 days on a Rotary Club exchange. The town was quite pretty, the pubs were nice and old, and the surrounding countryside was stunning. All around it was a nice little place to visit, much more attractive than the section of Canada I'm from.

I was born in Welshpool 30 yrs ago and still love it! I know it's not very good for shopping but hopefully that'll change with the new Smithfield development. Don't mind going out of town shopping because I appreciate the quiet of Welshpool when I get back. Do wish there weren't so many Polish people here though because they sit by the canal drinking and make it very uncomfortable for people who take their children to feed the ducks! Beautiful town!

Welshpool means an awful lot to me, though of recent it does seem to be going downhill. Housing or the lack of it must be a nightmare for young people. The last year has seen a huge rise in foreigners coming to the town snapping up all rental accomadation. Shopping is not great though the new Coed y Dinas store just out of Welshpool is a good walk around. I enjoy the pubs for a good night out but that's because I'm local.

Welshpool is a very pleasant town to live, with many friendly residents (however every town has it's not so friendly ones). There are many public houses in the town with The Angel being the outright winner. I would recommend you visit and sample its excellent food and friendly atmosphere. The town is due to undergo a facelift with the Smithfield being relocated to the outskirts and a new retail development (including amphitheater, restaurant, retail outlets and supermarket)which should encourage further visitors. There are many attractions in the area to visit such as Powis Castle, The Old Station, Coedydinas Garden centre, Llanfa! ir Light Railway, Offas Dyke, Cockpit, Museum and many more.

Not the right place for young families. Old residents are more interested in churches and charity shops.

I moved to Welshpool in 1974 to manage the Foster Menswear shop in Broad Street. I also did discos at the Astral rooms which were situated above the railway station. During my time in the town,I made many good friends, and I still regard Welshpool as my 'spiritual' home. Shall I ever return? Who knows. An old saying goes "always remember things as they were" - perhaps I will leave it as that. Nevertheless,I have very fond memories.

Welshpool is my home, and is rapidly on the decline, EU migrants have arrived on mass for some reason, taking jobs and council housing. Private housing is beyond the price of locals... The teenagers are bored senseless, the police can't be bothered to turn up and the council must do their budgeting with a blindfold and a pin. I love my town with a passion, and I am truly concerned for its and my children's future within it.

A special word of thanks to Welshpool High School for the use of the premises for the forum...Everyone who gave up their time to make the evening a big success, without your help we would not have been able to donate almost £18,000 to the Air Ambulance. Hope to see you all next year!!

Used to be a great place to live, but is quickly becoming very rough...Our once safe town doesn't feel like it used to! The pubs are rubbish compared to nearby towns like Newtown, Shrewsbury & Oswestry. Decent shopping has to be done elsewhere as charity/tat shops abound in Welshpool.

Although technically I have lived in Guilsfield for the whole of my 20 years, I consider myself to be a Welshpool girl having spent a lot of time in my pre-school years with my Grandma who lives in town. I am a student at Aberystwyth and I come home every weekend to work. Nothing matches the feeling I get when the train pulls up alongside the Old Station and I realise I'm home. Although I hope to find a job here when I graduate, I know that even if I have to move out of the town Welshpool will always be home to me. I am so proud to be from Welshpool, and there are so many familiar faces and sights here that mean so much to me. Welshpool has shaped me into the person I am today.

I'm from Welshpool originally but moved to Newtown seven years ago and it was a very wise move. Welshpool isn't a town. A town is where you can go for a shopping spree and Welshpool just hasn't got it. There are far too many charity shops and banks! Newtown has a much better selection of everything really.

Moving down the road to Newtown has opened my eyes: It's far bigger, there are more shops, more pubs, and more jobs!
