I think that the W&LLR is great place for a day out with the family. It is also good for railway enthusiasts like me. Even though I am only 12 years old I am a great fan of steam locomotives which is why a visit the railway very ofen to see all of the special events.

Although I didn't take the journey to Welshpool, I did in fact bring the train to a stop just before the Llanfair Station as I was picking flowers on the track. This would have been approximately 1943/4. My ancestry is the Astleys, the Paynes and the Theodores. I was raised in Park View on New Rd. by my maternal grandparents, and I have always considered Llanfair my home. I have a photo of my Grandad, Evan Astley, shaking hands with the Earl of Powys upon the re-opening of the Railway. I have just connected with some hitherto unknown 2nd and 3rd cousins, and have sent them some prints from W. T. R. Pryce's book "The Photographer in Rural Wales", of the train back when their Mums had the opportunity to enjoy the ride. Slightly off the point, but I recall a train in Welshpool we called the "Puffing Billy". Am I correct? I'm hoping to make a trip to Llanfair within the next 12 months, so I shall make the railway a must-see! It's wonderful to know this piece of history is still so cherished.

As a child I well remember going with my father, Edward Kenworthy & his great friend, Frank Hastilow & his boys up to Welshpool to help restore the railway tracks & various other jobs to enable the railway to reopen. We had great fun, & I was allowed to weed between the sleepers whilst the fathers & older boys used to cut back the brambles. The absolutely best thing was riding in the old wooden guards van back to the station & being allowed to pull the whistle to let people know we were coming. Funny, it never seemed to rain & was always sunny & warm looking back !! I think my father was also honoury treasurer for a number of years as I remember attending the AGM & I'm sure at one there was a display of old photographs. The period I'm thinking of must have been the early 60s as I can remember going to the grand reopening though I was'nt sure of the dates until I found your information. We have a relative who is working in London at the moment whose young son is "into" steam trains so I suggested a visit, then thought I had better look the railway up to make sure it was still running & found you. Thank you for the information. On a hot, humid, Sydney afternoon it bought back many pleasant memories.

John's photos show one of the interesting little railways that abound in Wales - I must try and visit it. The bogie of Monarch shown in this photo indicates that the loco is of a different type from most others and it would be interesting to see a photo showing Monarch in operation.
