Dinghy Dawdle 2009

Dinghy Dawdle 2008

Last updated: 06 May 2009

The Montgomery Canal will be alive with boaters of all ages during the annual Dinghy Dawdle in June 2009. Freda Davies is a member of Friends of the Montgomery Canal, who help organisers, Shropshire Union Canal Society organise the event. She told us more about the dawdle in May 2009:

  • More about the Montgomery Canal

  • The Montgomery Canal Dinghy Dawdle will be held on Sunday 7 June.

The event this year will take place from Penllwyn Lodges near Garthmyl,(a beautiful lakeside location), to Aberbechan with an option for boaters to travel for the first time to Freestone Lock. near Newtown.

There will be lots of fun with the boats passing through three locks and there will also be two road crossings so portable boats are essential.

Entry forms are now available and can be downloaded from the June events section of the Montgomery Canal website which has a link on the right hand side of this page.

The cost is £10 and this includes insurance and a plaque. 50 plus boats normally take part and the event is held on a different section of the canal each year.

Let's make this year's the biggest one so far! Canadian styled canoes with equipment can be borrowed for the event from the Friends of the Montgomery Canal, but if you havnt a boat try anything that will float and steer.

Dinghies, kyaks, canoes or coracles all take part.

The event is primarily to encourage people to use the canal and also to draw attention to the restrictions on some sections because of dropped roads.

It would make an even bigger attraction if the whole 35 mile length could be fully restored for use."
