Local Folklore

Candle

Last updated: 24 November 2005

Most towns and villages can lay claim to at least one strange myth, legend or local belief. Here are a few from Mid Wales - tell us about others.

The Four Stones of Hindwell
Four stones stand in a field in the village of Evenjobb near Presteigne - originally forming a dolmen or burial site. According to local myth, the stones walk to Hindwell Pool at midnight at the full moon, returning before dawn after drinking from the river.

Llanarth Church
There is an old story that the devil crept into Llanarth Church in Ceredigion to try to steal one of the church bells. He's challenged by the local vicar and jumps off the church tower. As he landed, the devil is said to have left his hoof marks on one of the gravestones. Can you spot them?

Llandysul
A pool in the river Teifi near Llandysul is said to be haunted by the ghost of a harpist who drowned there. He is said to sing wistful songs which are only heard by some people as they pass the spot.

Golau Corff (Corpse Candle)
There is an old belief in rural Wales that a candle-like light seen outside a house singalled the immiment death of somebody in the household.

Devil's Bridge - My late father was a wealth of folklore. Too late now. He never wrote it down. For some reason the devil was angry or couldn't cross the gorge or something and threw the hugs rocks there in a rage.

Llandysul - I think the pool you refer to is Pen Pwll. Went night fishing by there once. Jeepers..!

I checked and she did know about the story. She grew up in Brynonen, across the road from the church, next to the Police Station, but my grandfather's chapel was up on the hill above the village.Jokingly, she said she'd look for it next time she went down there from Aberystwyth.

My grandfather used to be a vicar in Llanarth when I was a kid growing up. I used to spend time there. I'll ask my mother if she knows about the story.

Thanks Pete. Keep us posted - Mid Wales Web Team
