Flooding
In February 2002, the town of Crickhowell in Powys was underwater. In one of the worst cases of flooding in recent years, up to one hundred people were stranded after the River Usk broke its banks. The cost of the damage ran into tens of thousands of pounds. Other parts of Mid Wales are also prone to flooding - the Dyfi Valley for example around the Machynlleth area and south Ceredigion along the river Teifi. Towns just across the Powys border in England are also at risk from heavy Welsh rainfall which can be carried to towns like Shrewsbury by the River Severn and River Vyrnwy. To help inform those at risk the Environment Agency have published indicative flood plain maps online and helpful information for those who find themselves living in a flood risk area. You can also access the latest severe weather warnings online and BBC Weather have a helpful guide on what to do before, during and after a flood. The Environment Agency also run a 24-hour advice line - Floodline on 0845 988 1188. |
