Sarn Sabrina Walk 2009

Walkers at Llyn Clywedog

Last updated: 17 April 2009

Credit crunch? Walk your cares away in the breathtaking scenery of mid-Wales. That's the message relayed by organisers of this year's Sarn Sabrina Walk, which takes place on Saturday 23 May. Adele Hopkins of the Sabrina Walks Committee told us more about the event in April 2009:

"In addition to a challenging 25 mile route: the Sarn Sabrina, a shorter 12 mile walk, the Semi-Sabrina is also a great favourite amongst walkers. Sponsorship forms are always available to those walkers who would like to raise money for their favourite charity.

Both walks have the Roman name for the Severn (the Hafren in Welsh) and ancient myth tells how Sabrina was one of three sisters, all water nymphs, who met on Pen Pumlumon to discuss how to wend their way to the sea.

Each sister took a different route; Ystwyth to the west and Varga (the Wye) away to the south while Sabrina, who loved the land, set out on a slow meandering course that led her far into the east and became what we know today as the River Severn.

In fact, Sabrina herself (a superb outdoor sculpture) looks on as the route heads out of Llanidloes following the national trail of Glyndwr's Way and up past the Van Pool, opening up extensive views of Llyn Clywedog and the surrounding countryside, before following the shoreline of the lake to the borders of the Hafren Forest and Cwm Biga Farm.

Sarn Sabrina walkers Climbing up through the Forest to the slopes of Pen Pumlumon, the trail then visits the Source of the Severn at 620m above sea level.

Descending through the forest along the Severn Way long distance path, it next takes to the watershed of the Severn and the Clywedog, enjoying stunning views of the surrounding countryside before arriving back in Llanidloes.

The 12-mile Semi-Sabrina is no less scenic, taking in Glyndwr's Way and Llyn Clywedog Nature Trail, and is ideal for those less able or less inclined to walk the full route in one day!

Last year's Sarn Sabrina was a great success and all walkers arrived back in Llanidloes happy and well (despite a few blisters) for a buffet meal, certificate and mementos of a great day's walking.

'Sabrina' - an oak and bronze outdoor sculpture produced jointly by Sue Thornton and Neil Reeves which stands in Severn Porte, alongside the river she represents. As ever, the walk committee are greatly looking forward to the usual mix of enthusiastic and dedicated walkers.

We feel the two different routes offer both a challenge to the 'serious' walker and perhaps more of a 'social' experience to those entering for the 12-mile walk.

Both may also provide ideal training for the Rotary Across Wales Walk, taking place on June 20th this year, jointly co-ordinated by the Rotary Clubs of Newtown and Llanidloes.

Details of the Sarn Sabrina and Semi Sabrina Walks and the Rotary Across Wales Walk can be found through links on the right hand side of this page.

In spite of the hard work involved in organising the Sabrina Walks, the committee were extremely pleased with this year's event. We congratulate all those who took part and thank everyone for their tremendous support and enthusiasm. See you all again next year!

This was a challenge yet fantastic walk although fatigued with sore muscles today I look forward to completing it again next year. Views are some of the best I have seen and I highly recommened it to anyone and everyone. You just need to be fit to do the whole walk. The hospitality by the organisers and all involved is such a great experience thanks to all involved

A challenge for the unfit (like me) but well worth the effort. A great escape and a great way to find out which are your weaker areas (knees...!!). Definitely one to add to any walkers calendar

My husband and I took the challenge to do the 25 mile route this year after doing the semi last year. We had a fantastic day and enjoyed every second of it. The marshalls were excellent and the whole day was very well organised. We will do it all over again next year. Fabulous.
