Round Britain in pictures

Sadly, Peter Griffiths, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2005, died on 4 September 2008.
Between 1 September 1997 and 7 February 1999 Peter Griffiths completed an epic solo 6,500 mile walk around the whole of the British mainland coast, starting and ending at Aberystwyth. Take a look at this selection of photos taken by Peter on his trip:

Will and Ed - a walk around Britain
This is a spectacular journey, not for the publicity accrued on photographs, or the web-tales, but for the depths of internal journeying that Peter must have gone through on all the long dark nights, the burning hot days, the new depths of fatigue that hit a long distance walker, the dreadful despondancy, and the unnerving buzzing thrill of climbing a hill, the eagle-freedom of full immersion in landscape.A truly inspirational journey, and we wish his family every condolance; be assured, please, that your Peter was a warrior, a man of the land, and a man of freedom. He will be remembered with love and admiration.

It is with an immense sadness that I have to say that Peter, my marvellous husband and companion, my dearest friend, died of cancer on 4th September. I want to thank the BBC Mid Wales Team for letting Peter have these web pages. I do hope that Peter's walk around the British coast, as well as his courage and determination will continue to fascinate and inspire lots of people. Peter and I organised a charity walk last May, on the Powys/Shropshire border. With a group of friends, we walked from Knucklas to Knighton, via Lloyney and along parts of the Jack Mytton Way and the Offa's Dyke%2! 0footpath. We had a truly enjoyable day. Thanks to kind donations from friends and family, a total amount of £565 was raised and shared between two cancer charities: Macmillan Cancer Support and Carol's Smile. Peter was very keen on a charity walk to be organised each year in May, even if he was not with us anymore. I will fulfil his wish with all my heart.

Hi Peter, great to see so many photo's of your wonderful walk and to read so much about it. I heard so much about it working with you its fantanstic to know that you actually did it and had such a great life enriching experience. I remember meeting you in Weston-Super-Mare whilst on honeymoon and hearing about your adventures, unfortunately I never got a chance to catch up later. I'm sorry to hear that you are having health problems at the moment and wish you a speedy and full recovery. Eastbourne is quite near where we live now so I'll look out for you when we are next down. Take care, and Richard sends%! 20his regards (and apologies for not writing!) Cheers, Peter

Hello Peter and Nathalie, what a beautiful trek which looks like Compostelle. Landscapes also like Bretagne coasts from I come back since a few days. How are you? I hope very well which a lot of projets and especially come to Annecy to do another walk with Marcel. I'm going to do "Tour des Bauges" with two friends, 5 donkeys (and Marcel) and 2 dogs. I think it'll be very funny.
