Derek visits Cwmann taking in the new causeway, the Teify valley and a few old pubs.
Listen to Walk 4
Starting point: St Stephens bridge, Lampeter.
Distance: 3 miles
Leaving Lampeter via St Stephen's bridge we note the new causeway and a beautiful stone lined wall. Before this was built you had to walk the road under the low railway bridge.
At Cwmann junction there used to be an old tannery and in its heyday the smell must have been pretty strong! The path goes up past the Cwmann Tavern with an old milestone opposite.

This old cart track goes up to a green lane but we take a right turn to Penlan farm on top of the hill. What a sight before us - looking down the Teify Valley. After drinking in the view, down through two fields with horses and ponies to Ddeunant and Parc y Rhos village. A favourite walk here is up to Gaer via Pencarreg Mountain.

An old pub, 'The Ram' which George Burrow stayed at in 1850 is now unfortunately closed as is 'The Lock and Key'. These were the drovers pubs of yesterday and the droving was thirsty work! President Jimmy Carter also visited 'The Ram' for a few meals.
The high ground above Cwmann is good walking country. During WW2 the Home Guard kept watch from here for German bombers flying towards Liverpool. One cold night they lit gorse to keep warm and a bomb was dropped by returning aircraft, waking the whole area! It's all down hill from here back to the town.

Really wonderful to read and hear about my old university stamping ground - but such a shock to hear that The Ram is closed - what a wonderful pub and such great memories.
