Gaer Fawr Wood

Bluebells

Last updated: 24 November 2005

Rachel Mort-Adams from Pentrefelin in the Tanat Valley sent us this description of a woodland walk near Welshpool.

"At this time of year (May), bluebells are out in force and what better walk to take than through bluebell wood?

My husband Simon and I located our nearest one - Gaer Fawr Wood at Guilsfield near Welshpool, Powys - via the Woodland Trust's web site.

Follow the main Guilsfield village road the B4392 and turn onto Gwreiddyn Lane which is signposted for Geuffordd. The entrance to the wood is just two minutes drive further on. There is parking for around four cars and an information board provides clear details of footpaths and a bridleway through the wood.

We chose the least steep of the footpaths, (still a sweat inducing endeavour on a warm day) and wound our way up the hillside through woodlands and over grassland up to the hill top and former site of a Roman fort.

The dazzling display of dreamy, dancing bluebells every step of the way will take your breath away. There are many other wild flowers to enjoy en route, together with the lovely sounds of twigs snapping beneath your feet and birdsong all around.

A tranquil and uplifting experience not to be missed."
