Rights of Way

Nina Bufton from the Council's Rights of Way department is pictured with some of the questionnaires.

Last updated: 24 November 2005

Powys Council wants to know what people think about the county's public rights of way. They information will be used to draw up a plan for the way the countryside is used in future.

Information from Powys County Council:

"Powys has a vast network of footpaths and bridleways covering over 12,000 individual public rights of way. Ranging from small walks to larger managed trails, they provide a major recreational resource for locals as well as contributing significantly to the tourist economy.

A questionnaire surveying people's views on rights of way is now available. Powys County Council, who are carrying out the consultation, are keen to involve both users and non-users of the network, and also landowners and farmers.

"We want to assess the frequency and type of use, accessibility and suitability, as well as feedback on how well the rights of way network meet people's current and likely future needs," explains County Councillor John Thompson, Board Member with responsibility for countryside matters.

"We also want to hear the views of landowners, and anyone who doesn't currently use the network to find out their reasons why."

"It is important that anyone with an interest in the Powys countryside takes part as the results of the survey will be fed into a plan to improve the county's rights of way network, to ensure it meets the needs of users."

All respondents will be placed into a free prize draw where one lucky person will win £100 cash.

For a questionnaire please contact Nina Bufton on 01597 827683, email nina.bufton@powys.gov.uk or write to her at Powys County Council, St Johns Offices, Fiveways, Llandrindod Wells, Powys, LD1 5ES. Responses need to be submitted by 2nd December 2005."

I was walking in the area of Felinfach on 4 September trying to find a suitable walk for my rambling group. The scenery is truly beautiful but trying to find usable footpaths is frustrating. Although I managed a 11 mile circular on the south of Felinfach this was mostly on bridalways & roads making the walk longer than planned due to the number of overgrown or deliberatley blocked rights of way & denying access to some of features such as Drostre Bank. This means another journey from Pontypridd to find a walk of the correct duration. Using Felinfach as a base for circular walks I think could be promoted as an alternative to some of the harder walks in the Beacons & ending with refreshment in either of the two local inns

I am disturbed. I saw an article in last week's Mid-Wales newspaper about thie survey. I emailed Nina Bufton, only to be told that she is on holiday until the middle of November. I was given another email address, which I tried and was told that I could have a questionnaire, when she gets them! Where are their questionnaires, and will they be made available in time for people to reply by 2nd December?

Spent 4 days in Llanfair Caereinion trying to find a public right of way that was waymarked and accessible. Not possible except if following council issued bookelet of walks in that area. Disgusted at CC`s failure to keep these paths open to walkers. Letter to follow.
