Walk Description
Click here for a large map of the walk. The area around Carno is a very scenic and tranquil part of Wales. It is an area of sheep folds, hills of green and gentle undulation. You can walk for miles and be entirely alone, give or take a flock of sheep or two.
Just a few miles north of the village of Caersws, you'll find a trio of lakes offering leisurely walking and plentiful wildlife. It's a place of standing stones and tall skies - a walk on the wild side.
This circular walk takes place around the Llyn Mawr Wildlife Nature Reserve. Following the public footpath takes the walker around the three lakes, Llyn Mawr, Llyn y Tarw and Llyn Du. It's an easy and leisurely walk covering a distance of 3.5 miles.
Aquatic plants and insects provide an important food source for birds and amphibians. Llyn Mawr also has water voles. In the summer, watery margins and boggy hollows come alive with flowers and aquatic life comes to the the surface.
If you're lucky you may find the odd Buzzard, Skylark and Falcon flying in the open sky. One bird you will be sure of seeing is the Black-headed Gull which, unusually, prefers to nest inland.
It's an area where conservationists are in their element and Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust are particularly aware of the delicate balance of nature.
