Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway

John Tedstone on Llanfair Caereinion stationHe lives more than a hundred miles away but John Tedstone travels regularly from his home in Nottinghamshire to Montgomeryshire. For almost 40 years, he's been a volunteer on the Welshpool Llanfair Light Railway.

Which organisation are you involved with?
Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway.

What sort of volunteer work do you do and where?
Membership Renewals Secretary.

How did you get started?
I first became aware of the railway when passing by on the way to family holidays on the coast in the 1960s. I joined and soon started volunteering whenever I had the time.

How long have you been a volunteer?
A member since 1967, I worked as a guard in the late 1960s - early 1970s. I have been one of the Membership Secretaries for 20 years.

Do you need any special skills?
An interest in the railway and being able to spend some time at the railway, including any time needed for training.

How many hours a week/month do you give?
About 10-15 hours a month, depending on the time of year.

What are the best and worst things about being a volunteer?
Satisfaction with being part of a shared enterprise which gives interest and pleasure to many people. For membership work, deadlines can be a problem - for working at the railway, it can be a bit wet at times.

Hi. I am also a volunteer at the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway. I go to the railway as oftern as I can (which isn't as often as I would like). Anyway I hope that the railway is getting to be better known by the public and I hope that more people will come to the railway and become an active volunteer to help us with its running.
