A walk on the wild side
Last updated: 19 September 2006
Pim Young moved to Brecon at the beginning of 2006 and soon got involved with the charity, Brecknock Wildlife Trust. Pim talks about her voluntary work with BWT, which manages several nature reserves for the benefit of wildlife and people.
Which organisation are you involved with?
Brecknock Wildlife Trust
What sort of volunteer work do you do and where?
My voluntary work with the Trust includes office-based support - anything from writing press releases and helping with funding applications to envelope stuffing with other willing volunteers. I also join the regular work party days where a team of volunteers get stuck in to practical conservation tasks in the Trust's 21 nature reserves. We've done all sorts of things like clearing vegetation, building walkways and mammal habitats.
How did you get started?
I was already a member of the London Wildlife Trust and when I moved to Brecon I wanted to get involved with their work too and approached the charity directly offering any sort of help they might need. It just snowballed fom there.
How long have you been a volunteer?
About 6 months with BWT, but I'd done various bits and pieces before I moved to Brecon - home help and working on nature reserves in London
Are there any special skills you need to be a volunteer?
Not especially, just enthusiasm and enjoying spending time with other people.
How many hours a week/month do you give?
About 3 days/week
What are the best and worst things about being a volunteer?
The best thing, without a doubt, is the people that you meet. In Brecon the other major advantage is tbe stunning scenery I get to see on the nature reserves. You also learn a lot about yourself in the process and realise you are capable of much more than you might have thought before! The downsides? Can't think of any at the moment!
