Oldies Club

Fee Bee, an oldies club sponsor dog

Last updated: 05 March 2009

Abigail Harrap is the Oldies Club's Regional Coordinator for Wales and is based near Machynlleth. The charity aims to help vulnerable older dogs into permanent homes.

  • More about volunteering in Mid Wales

  • Which organisation are you involved with?
    Oldies Club

What sort of volunteer work do you do and where?
Regional Coordinator for Wales, based near Machynlleth in Powys

    How did you get started?
I got to know about the Oldies Club via a dog welfare web forum called The Refuge, and really fell in love with the charity's aim of helping vulnerable older dogs into permanent homes. In Autumn 2008 I decided I had some time I could give and saw that the Oldies Club was looking for Regional Coordinators. It was a done deal!

How long have you been a volunteer?
    Since October 2008.

Are there any special skills you need to be a volunteer?
Enthusiasm! And some time to spare, though maybe not as much as you think. Even an hour a month helps us enormously. A love of dogs helps, but it is enough to agree with the aims of the charity and want to get involved.

How many hours a week/month do you give?
It varies, but for me is around 2 hours a week minimum. The group of volunteers that I am building up varies from putting up a few posters as a one-off, to a regular afternoon a month.

What are the best and worst things about being a volunteer?
The best thing is being able to be a part of something I really believe in. The worst thing is not having more time and resources to give! It never feels like enough and I would quite happily spend all my time on the Oldies Club.
