Tregaron School 1947

Tregaron School 1947

Last updated: 16 March 2009

Victor Allen is a retired police officer who lives on The Wirral. In March 2009 he sent us an old school photograph of himself with schoolmates at Tregaron in 1947. He told us more about the photograph:

  • More old photos of Mid Wales...

  • "I was born in Tregaron at Tynewydd Farm on the edge of the Bog and christened at 'Capel y Berth' just up the road in September 1941. I left Tregaron in 1960 to pursue a career in Nursing at Cardiff but joined the Police Service in 1965.

I was educated at Tregaron Church School (Dewi Road) where Mr Jones (Jones Bach) was then headmaster. Miss Pugh and Miss Jones were the other two teachers at the school.

Attached is a school photograph taken around 1947 as far as I can work out. Behind the photo are the trees surrounding the bungalow 'Y Fron' which at that time was the residence of Doctor Williams.

I can still name 80% of the children in the photo. I think the main one now is Timothy Morgan, who is now I believe, The Rev. Morgan. There is also David Harvey who still lives in Tregaron.

I am standing at the back alongside Mr Jones (head teacher). David Harvey is seated immediately below him at the end. Miss Pugh is at the opposite end. She used to live at a cottage called 'Ivy Bush' adjacent to Tregaron Square close to the 'Talbot Hotel'.

I now live in Wirral, 14 miles North of Chester where I served as a police officer in the Cheshire Constabulary for over 30 years having retired in the mid-nineties. My brother Terry Allen still lives in Tregaron and is a keen fisherman!"

    Victor Allen
