Firefighter's advice

David Evans-Pugh

Last updated: 22 February 2008

David Evans-Pugh is a Community Safety Manager for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service. Here he recounts the advice available for elderly people at the information day organised by Age Concern Ceredigion at Tregaron's Talbot Hotel on 7 February.

Listen to David Evans-Pugh...

Hello, my name's David Evans-Pugh. I'm the Community Safety Manager for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service.

I cover the county of Ceredigion and today I'm in Tregaron with the Age Concern run 'Keep Well This Winter' initiative, and my role today is basically to raise awareness for fire safety in the home.

We'll be offering free home fire safety checks, giving advice to the general public on fire safety, all aspects of that, putting cigarettes out, having an escape plan, fire safety in the home, cooker safety, not to leave cooking unattended.

We also offer a range of items such as smoke detectors, multi-socket electric blankets and hard of hearing smoke detectors, fire angels, which are smoke detectors put into your light socket.

And hopefully, we're just here today to raise awareness to advise people that a lot of hazards in the home and dangers can be reduced just by simple awareness.

And if any members of the public does wish to have a home fire safety check free of charge either go on the website a href="http://www.fire.gov.uk/.uk"http://www.fire.gov.uk/.uk or simply to ring the freephone number 0800 169 1234."
