Tregaron's Red Kite Centre

The Red Kite Centre is one of Tregaron's main attractions. Housed in an old Victorian school, the centre is part of Ceredigion Museum with displays on the area's cultural and rural heritage. Take a virtual tour of the building and find out more below.

The school finally closed in 1950 but began to be used by the community once more in 1997. After a grant from the Countryside Council for Wales in 2003, the Red Kite Centre opened to the public as a centre for the community and for visitors to the area.

While passing through Tregaron last October I was fortunately was able to visit the centre. It was most interesting and informative display. I particularly enjoyed the information video on the Red Kite and practising my halting welsh on the friendly volunteers there. I can also recommend the Welsh cakes - they were yum!

My grandfather was a head master at the school - Philip W Rees - and his second wife Lizzie Evans had been a teacher in the scool. Several great uncles were pupil teachers at the school and also my mother. I have some photos of staff and pupils from about 1900 to 1930.
