The comments mostly positive are reassuring to those of us who still live here in Talgarth. I was a Hay boy but Hay-on-Wye has got a bit big for it's boots I think. I still like Hay but don't want to live there. I have been here in Talgarth since 1973 and sad to say I have seen the sad decline but when you are in a hole it is best to climb out of it but need a some aid. The loss of the Mental Hospital was a big blow to employment and we need work here badly. I hope someone reading this will bring jobs back here. We are in many ways more impoverished than the S Wales valleys ! regarding work and public transport, it is about time we had a bigger slice of the economic cake from the Welsh Assembly and / or European money to lift us out of this gloom.

Let's face it. Talgarth hasn't got the panache of Hay or Brecon but compared to other market towns in the area it's a peach. Talgarth residents are trying very hard to attract tourists and I applaud that. It's got a great Chinese take away, a lovely river, interesting old buildings, some great pubs and, in general, lovely people.

My family and I moved to the town best part of twenty years ago & have recieved nothing but friendship and welcome. Having lived in several parts of the country we've no complaints at all about living in this community minded town. Mind you integration is a two way thing!

I was born and brought up in Talgarth and many of my best friends still live there.Thankfully, I left the town several years ago and rarely return. I find it a sad reflection of the town I once loved. It is has become an austere and depressing town and I find the people amongst the most unfriendly that I have ever met.My family has lived in Talgarth for over 200 years, I only hope that they can't see the dreary and sad place that it has now become.

I have many great and fond memories of Talgarth, and have, sadly, the late and very honourable Peter Prosser, to thank for them, as do many young people that Peter and his wife 'Mac'had the foresight and genuine kind heartedness to send from Portsmouth To Talgarth to 'holiday' in their home Enig Villas, I was a young care worker whom Peter in particular, took under his wing, and i have much to thank him for in my Adult Profesional life for his inspirational and wholly dedicated aproach to making young peoples lives meaningfull and hopefull, i am still in contact with some of the 'Urchins'that we took away and they have nothing but very warm and fond Memories of both Peter and Mac prosser, and of course Talgarth. For me it has left a legacy in as much as i then became a mountaineer and climber and developed the deepest love for the brecons but in particular Talgarth. I shall be returning to Talgarth in Aughust and indeed look foreward to a pint in the bell and the Tower and recalling some trekking stories about Alf Roberts Peters Cousin.

I must put this reply toSimon Jones,Lampeter. We have never had Hells Angels in Talgarth, but twice a year The Harley Davidson Club have a rally here and have done so for many years. They have never been troublesome and are very friendly bikers who do a lot for charity and are always made welcome by the people of Talgarth many of whom look forward to their arrival twice a year.Don't judge people by their looks.

In April 2008 we decided to visit Talgarth and arrived Friday evening. The place was over run with noisy Drunken Hell Angles who were having a weekend long party. The place was over run with them. By 10:00 we decided to pack up and leave because there was obviously going to be trouble.

There often youngsters on this site complaining that there is nothing for them to do in Talgarth. I wonder if they know there is a youth club,an army cadet unit, a soccer team and a rugby club in the town. The rugby club caters for players from under 8s upwards. There is also a bowling club and 2 tennis courts.

The people of Talgarth should be thankful for the level of petty crime that takes place in this area. It could be far worse. It is good that police are on patrol more often and while it may seem more threatening to some, many will feel safer.Good to hear about the toilets bing locked, it was disgusting how some of the yobs used to vandalise that area and make the town look a worse place. With time, things will improve, we just have to wait.

Talgarth is getting now to be a rough place. Since october 2008 there has been alot of crime from most of the younger and older people that hang around the square, since october the toilets on the square have been closed due to graffiti in the toilets and on the wall, there are cameras in the park and in most places where young people used to hang out, there are police going around the place all the time, cars going up and down the avenue in the morning about 2-3 etc......there are a few young people in talgarth that have nothing to do because of all the things that have been happening there. me and my! friends have nothing to do any more. please help the people that dont cause trouble and need things to do. please reply asap with any ideas.

I was evacuated from cockney London to the Hamers(Tyglas cottage)? on left on rd to Velindre where we went to school 1940-45. Talgarth once a year to get new clothes was big event. Lots of apples and veg but never had a banana and maybe once had an orange but we were looked after so well (me and Tommy Bowling). Visited many times since and staying nearby in August 2008.

I remember going to stay with my uncle Peter Prosser who lived in Enig Villa. I used to love going fishing in the river and by the waterfall, and go up the mountains. My gran (Sheila Prosser) still has relatives there and we always go up to the Black mountain festival and visit my uncle Brian and auntie Phyllis Spencer .

Just visited Talgarth for the first time this weekend to attend the Harley Davidson Rally. Camped next to the rugby pitch. First impresion....sleepy welsh town, rather run down in parts, shops closed etc. But pubs with atmosphere and real down to earth friendly people people. Town must have lots of potential now it is largely traffic free. People of Talgarth must sieze the chance to regenerate and preserve their lovely town Hope to see you next year.

My grandparents were brought up and lived in Talgarth for many years. My grandmother rang the sweet shop in High Street (Angela Taylor) and my grandfather the barbers and ladies hairdressers in The Square (where the Chinese is now!!!) (William Taylor). I've been trying to find out about my great grandfather who was the only person to die in the Great Flood of Talgarth in 1880 - can anyone help?

While on vaccation in Wales, my wife Kristina and I stayed with Lynne and Stephen Groves at The Old Radnor Barn Bed and Breakfast in Talgarth. We had a wonderful time visiting many places in the Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains and for sure we will be back again. The Old Radnor Barn was the perfect place to stay and was infact the best B&B that we stayed in during our time in Wales. Now we have to go back to Germany and we feel a loss.

My grandmother was born in Talgarth in 1899 at Brookside cottage, she was a member of the Bullock family. Last year my son and I spent an afternoon walking around the old part and visted Brookside cottage. The house is modernized now but I can still reconize it. The bridge my great grand-dad built still spans the brook. We had a great time and can't wait to come back and spend a longer time there. If you could bottle Talgarth you could sell it.

My grandfather was born in Talgarth in 1905. His mother, Clara Pugh b.1883, was one of 11 children born & raised there by Levi Pugh b.1846 and his wife Jane formerly Vaughan b.1846. Levi was a Stone Mason from a long line of Stone Masons and had come from Glasbury, but wife Jane and her brother John Powell Vaughan were "Talgarthians". Their mother was Sarah Vaughan, born about 1825, unmarried, brought them up single-handed. They must have all been fine drinkers - Sarah Vaughan was the Lodging-house Keeper of The Castle Inn for many years (does it still exist?) and on retirement lived next door to it in "Castle House" and then in "Castle Villa".Levi Pugh & Jane lived in "Malt House Cottage". I think this might have benn later called "Castle Cottage"? He died aged only 55 of pneumonia in 1900 in "Castle View".On of Levi & Jane's children, William Vaughan Pugh, ran the Radnor Arms Inn in Talgarth - around 1900-1901.Another relative ran the Three Cocks down the road...Does anyone remember these places? The stone-mason Pugh's? I will visit Talgarth in April 2007 for the first time. Am looking forward to it.

I was in Talgarth last Saturday, 31 March, to visit my Aunt. The new road and bypass is coming along nicely; good see after so many years. I hope it will help the town regenerate because I thought it was looking very sad for itself, especially the road between the Bell pub and the brige where all the businesses seemed to be closed. Here's to a revitalised Talgarth!

I noticed the Cook Brothers have written in.Had many great drinking sessions with you both. I notice the Talagrth Cricket XI isn't as strong as it has been. It's a shame that, as i can't begin to tell you the many great times i had playing cricket on the MWH fields and followed by the late nights in the Tower hotel. I am a person who has lived in Talgarth for numerous years. It has certainly changed over the last ten years-a lot of the memorable characters have long since left our quaint but quiet town to rest in the quiet of distant places. Folk who are memorable to me and I am sure to others. All these guys have made Talgarth what it is today-a town of many happy times and good memories to cherish and to never forget the folk who have touched our lives and blessed us with our memories. A happy new year Talgarth. Lets hope we can say its a good one for our town and prosperity will return once again to this strange but quite unique town called Talgarth.....my home.

Talgarth has its old charm and some characters left from years gone by, and a gentle way of life, or if you prefer things can get a bit more upbeat with music etc in the pubs, mine The New Inn has this every Saturday! I see that Terry White explains in bracketed text that we are the most exspensive pub in town! I do not mind holding this title, as we afford to our visitors leather sofas and tub chairs, high back leather dinning chairs, fresh home made food, real chips made to order are also included on the menu! Our Real Ales constantly being rotated as guests, and after all a pint of John Smiths is only £2-30!!! Not exactly the costs of your house! I know Terry resonably well and will rib him for his entry. The New Inn "Discerning Customers Please Apply Within!!!!"

I have just read Tim Myton's comments on this site and I too have very fond memories of Talgarth my grandparents lived there, I still have family and friends living in and around the area. As a child, during the school holidays I used to go and stay with my grandparents mr and mrs crane of westfields.Tim, I dont remember you but I certainly remember your cousins especially Mandy. We were very good friends. Mandy, Beverley Prosser and I used to have great fun catching bullheads in the river, walking down to the monkey bridge and swinging across the water on a rope (cant remember if it was a pond or a stream) buying sweets from powny's sweetshop and sitting in the bus stop in the town square - I could go on forever! life was so simple then!! Tim you mentioned my grandmother - mrs crane - she was a well known character wasn't she? the best cake maker and christmas pudding maker i've ever met! I would love to hear from anybody else who remembers her or might even remember me - the wild one from cheltenham!

I still have family in Talgarth. I spent many a happy summer holiday staying with my Nan (Gwen) in her bungalow. I used to catch the united counties bus in Stamford then change to the Red and White bus at Cheltenham and 9 hours later would get dropped off outside the New Inn pub. I would only be 9 at the time, I even went to school there for a short time in 1963 and my brother and I were given a bible when we left which I still have. The headmistress Miss F W Williams wrote her name in it. I can remember going with my Nan to the post office on the corner and then to John Gwenn! ’s shop. I spent many a happy hour with my cousins, Mandy, Nigel and Matthew in the river trying to catch bullheads without a net and then going to the shop to get a bottle of corona pop. I can only just remember the steam train heading off down the track with my Mother and Aunty Ann waving to us as they went. I used to go to Mrs Crane who lived in the corner of Westfields and remember her making drop scones on the solid fuel stove. Next door to (Bert), my uncle’s house at number 4 Westfields lived the Prosser family, I think they may have been milkmen but not to sure.

I have lived in Talgarth just over 32 years. It's a place where you can still be a stranger after 10 years or a local after 10 days. If you accept the way life is lived here you are made to feel like a local very quickly, if you don't, then that's your problem. I got to know people by going out [to the pub] and playing rugby with Gwernyfed RFC.
Talgarth, in those days had 7 or 8 pubs, now alas there are only 4. The Bell Hotel has the longest serving landlady in Talgarth [34 years] and has the cheapest prices in town. [The New Inn is the dearest]. It's a very nice place to live.

I lived in Talgarth for 10 years. I left in 1998 to start afresh with my 2 lads Stefan and Louis. My mum Joan Walker still lives in Trefecca. My dear father Darrell Walker passed away in 1994. We first moved to Llyswen and ran the Bridgend Inn for 4 years. Talgarth is a beautiful place to live and Trefecca is so peaceful. I haven't been back for 2 years but I'm sure it's still the same. I used to work at the Tower hotel. I cleaned the pub and the hotel in 1998. It was when Stuart and Julia ran the place. I was very good friends with Kenny who was or still might be the barman there. If any one reads this, can you say hi to Kenny for me - I haven't seen him for about 4 years now. It's a shame that some of the buildings have shut down, but then I think it suits the place as it feels like a proper Welsh town where time stands still. My mother is very well known to the Talgarth people so also, anyone reading this say hi to her for me. I don't get to see her very much these days as I do security work. Thanx for reading, Fiona.

I spent most of 2002 in Talgarth and believe it's one of the nicest towns I've ever been to. The people there were fantastic. The Tower hotel was where I spent most of my time when I wasn't embracing the MWH Cricket field and had many great times in both Locations. Neil Morris was responsible for my stay, and for that I owe him gracefully. I can't wait to return to the cider country.

Can you believe that at one time, not so long ago, even in the 80's Talgarth had four full time banks, more than Hay-on-Wye and now has just the one, part time, branch. There used to be a wide variety of shops all over the town cantre, now, there are hardly a handful, and they are either never open or look run down.
Talgarth faces serious problems - is there a way out, can the town be revived? It is such a shame it is like it is, it is not getting the credit it so rightly deserves as a once important link with medical sector, even once a Borough.
I only hope the bypass and regeneneration will be successful.

Like Denbigh in North Wales, Talgarth, I feel, should be featured on ITV Wales' Your Century, a programme about the history of various towns around Wales.
I have mentioned Denbigh as it has so much in common with Talgarth it is almost unbelievable. Both towns had large institutions namely the Mid Wales and North Wales Hospitals, both had TB Sanitoriums (Bronllys), these being the towns main employers, and both suffered drastically when hospitals closed, leaving unemployment and closing shops/businesses.
Talgarth has a very important history and is heavily linked with healthcare, therefore more should be done to promote this, a museum perhaps, like Denbigh, devoted to the hospital, or even the town as a whole?

Hi I see that Rod Williams knows the 80's star enjoyed a meal at my establishment!
We have had many people dine with us, or simply enjoy a drink that are well known, but we feel that it is always nicer not to make a fuss, as we are all simply people living our lives.
This part of Wales has many bolt holes for the famous and rich, is nice to think that they can enjoy the simple things in life whilst here.
I always look on this site for peoples comments and any messages that may interest me! Congratulations to the BBC for this service, especially all the pictures of times gone by.
Thank you also to talgarth and all our customers.

Rod Williams Talgarth.
This is a tale I heard in the Radnor Arms Talgarth. Told to me by a now deceased council road worker (BH)who liked his cider.
The old Council (Breconshire County Council) before Powys had sent a couple of roadmen to widen the road in Church Street Talgarth along by the Talgarth Church. Anyone who knows the road will see a kink in the church wall where a telephone pole stands today, I think it is still there?.The earth was loaded onto a lorry and taken up the Pengenfordd main road and dumped where some fir trees grow on the left hand side. I presume they were widening sections of that road to and used the earth from the churchyard wall as a convenient depositary. Anyway after a few trips back and forth the story teller (BH)looked down at this earth they dumped and "Oh hell, there's a blokes head down there" a skull he meant of course. They must have reported it back to the county surveyor and the job was stopped. Hence the kink in the churchyard wall.
I think it is a true story myself despite the cider's effects. Of course it caused a few smiles when someone added there can't be many places that had a resident whose head was halfway to Pengenfford and their feet still in Talgarth. Or do you think that is stretching it a bit far?

Everyone raves about the Three Tuns in Hay, now sadly burned. We had equally a good pub in Talgarth and to my way of thinking was larger and far better than the Three Tuns. I speak of the Radnor Arms, noted for it's strong cider and good beer. Some tales and yarns were told in that pub I can tell you. Mr and Mrs James were the landlord and landlady. Mr James known to some as Jammy (to his annoyance)wouldn't stand any nonsense in there, he'd come out with his wooden mallet and wave it about at any trouble makers. Old stalwarts and customers now deceased were Dicky (Dido) Davies from Bronllys, Bryn Haines from Talgarth, Dilwyn the Hall(Tredustan), Arthur Kellan,Ron Pavey Snr,Bill Aberedw(Price), Mr and Mrs Stone from Blacwood and friends Mr and Mrs Crowley from Blackwood. The 'Sankey' Hymns would be sang around that roaring log fire in the shiney black range grate on a Saturday night and finished off with a rendering of Cwm Rhondda. We had some cracking good nights in there, the old stone flagstones and settles made it all the more traditional. They were all great and good people the youth today perhaps would not appreciate it but it was the best pub I have ever drank in. The stories and tales I heard were endlessbut many forgotten but remember one or two which I will relate seperately.

Actually I am a Hay-on-Wye born person living in Talgarth. Been here over 30 years now. I still love the country around here and Hay of course which holds fond memories. The two towns were once linked by rail on the now closed Hereford Hay and Brecon railway. Had someone had the vision to have kept the rail link between Hay and Talgarth using steam locomotives both towns would have benfited greatly by the tourism it would have brought. It is never to late I suppose but would cost a lot of money.

My aunt lives in Talgarth so I have been visiting on and off for forty-odd years. It's a nice old town which doesn't change much at all although it could do with more shops. What is desperately needed and I know has been on the cards for many, many years is a by-pass to stop all the traffic, particularly the heavy lorries from passing through the town and causing havoc as they turn the bend at the bottom of Regent Street by the bridge. So whichever bit of government, national or local, is responsible, take pity on Talgarth and cough up the cash for the by-pass - pleeeease!!!

Having lived and worked in Talgarth in the early 1970's I was wondering
what happened to the Tower Hotel as I see no mention of it on any of the web
sites. Is it still going, if not what happened to it?

In 1998, I stayed for a week with my cousin and her husband. He lived in the old courthouse. They had a creek right behind the house.
I thought Talgarth was a very nice place; I loved all of the mid Wales country that I saw. He was going to take me to the sheep auction but we got up too late.
You have a beautiful town, and I would love to re-visit one day. I also loved "The Farmer's Arms" pub in Cwm Du (did I spell that right?) Best wishes, Steve

I visited Talgarth when my school went on the Duke of Endinburgh's Bronze Award Expedition last summer. My group had to walk through Talgarth to reach our campsite and we thought it was a lovely little town. We wanted to stop for longer to see more of it!

The town has much to offer, a great place to start hill walking from and pleasant dells to visit such as Pwll-y-Wrach nature reserve. Anyone interested in geology there are a few amateur geologists in the area including me who lives in the town. Fossil fish remains can be found and a near by quarry, it has produced a very intersting fossil spider like creature. This was a first for Wales and it is 410 million years old. A nice town if we had a few more shops but we need more people to visit. We have an annual festival over 2 days in August, the Sat and Sun of the Bank Holiday in fact.
