Catherine Lea from Rhayader
Interesting photos from Talgarth, but did you know about Rhayader's Christmas tree? We also have people putting up the lights in a similar way each year, but the special thing about the tree, is that it is the largest MANHANDLED tree in Britain. The 'team' meet at Rhayader clock early on the first Sunday in December. Then set off up the Elan Valley to cut the tree. The Elan Valley Rangers, pick out the tree in advance, and the team, (some have done it for 30 years or more) cut it down, load it onto a tipping trailer these days, pulled by a tractor instead of horses, and come back in triumph to the centre of Rhayader around 10:30 to 11:00am. The trunk is then trimmed to fit the socket, by the expert chain saw man, and then the community watches and cheers them on as the ropes are tied and 'everyman' is 'roped in' to hauling the tree up and into place! It is quite a spectacular event! well worth waiting around until midday or so, to see and join in. It really begins the Christmas Season. Literally, Everyone Pulling Together! There is a great community spirit in Rhayader, even we incomers are included and made to feel welcome.
