Borth is a great place to go miles of beach and sand dunes. I recommend the new surf school that has just opened called Aberadventures. I had great fun and learnt loads of things. The instructors are highly qualified and the school is BSA level 3 approved. They also teach stand up paddle surfing which I will be trying next. Check them out they have things to do rain or shine, good luck with your new venture boys.

Hello to Anna. Love Borth, always have. Like the idea of a surfers lodge. It would be nice to see Borth return to its old lively self (although its nice when quiet too!)and ideas like this should be supported. Long live the Friendship Inn...

Hi, i am moving to Borth at the beginning of June, and i am hoping to learn to surf. Does anyone know of someone who would be willing to give me some lessons? Is there a surf school of any sorts? I am also looking for somewhere to store our windsurfer as the flat we are renting does not have space for it. Is there anywhere that we could pay for to keep it?

Hey Anna, I think it'd be an awesome idea tbh itd probably start a little escalation of creating Borth as a 3rd surfing mecca (along with abersoch and the gower) I live in Oxford/New Quay and go to uni at Bangor - the only problem is that you may have competition from BnBs in aber where people could stay - but if you're offering cheap accomodation (particularly for us surfer) then I think you're onto a winner!

I live in borth and I thought of opening a "surfers paradise" ,a lodge for surfers where you can rent a room or bed for the lowest price possible. (there will be no breakfast, but there is a kitchen so you can make your own) The lodge will be situated close to the life-boat station on the seaside. I thought it would be ideal for surfers that want to surf for more than one day, but have to travel from far away. Could you as surfers please air your thoughts about my idea so that I know what is needed in Borth. Hope to see your reactions soon, anna

The reason I love Borth is because the majority of its lovely buildings haven't been destroyed by the 60s and the 70s concrete jungle. Well apart from the Grand Hotel and the School. I was a child in the 70s and remember these buildings vaguely. I remember the Grand Hotel and the school as being beautiful buildings. But sadly they have gone.
I remember you could get fish and chips from the old caravan converted into a chip shop on the Sea rivers site.
One thing that made us all laugh when we were in Borth last year was us Black Country people all sitting in the dunes soaking up the sun. And an Olive skinned man was posing in these really skimpy speedos/70s type pants! They were red, and his hair was shoulder length. He was trim and seemed to be posing. We were sure that he was a throwback from the 70s or maybe he was an Italian sun god or maybe he was a cook from the caravan chippy on sea rivers?

A great place for peace and quiet. Been holidaying there for as long as I can remember. Great little town, great surf, great dunes, great scenery, great beach. Not a year goes by without going at least once.

I have just been surfing here, really powerful waves that will make you go very quick if you catch them right. About 3 metre waves that were the cleansest I've surfed for a while.

Caught my first ever wave at Borth and will NEVER forget it! Miss living in Aber and miss the surf loads! Borth is good in winter but cold! Summer gives small swells but sometimes the odd good day! Give it a go!

I've had a few waves in Borth (thanks to board loans from John Howarth and Tim Shaw - thanks guys!), and really enjoyed it. I like the break off the cliff. Although getting a decent wave there is 'hit and miss', Borth is a perfect little surf town on the simmer; plenty of sand and space, a solid crew of local surfers who enjoy sharing their breaks with the (respectful!) out-of-towner, good fishing (for the flat days), and a proposed artificial reef should reduce the 'hit and miss' element if it goes ahead. If you're looking for a place to have a bit of fun without the crowds, and in a beautiful setting, get down to Borth (warm wetsuits essential!).

Borth is a very peaceful place to surf especially in colder winter mornings, when the only people out are my bros Idris, Gaz and Nick and alomst always Amos. Even on the bigger days Borth can be very forgiving. Peace and love...

My family are from Wales and I was born there. Went back there in 95(?). Surprised there were any waves at all. Me and my bro borrowed a couple of boards from Tim Shaw and went out a couple of times. Pretty impressed. only prob was the temperature...freezing... anyway, hope all you locals are still charging. hope to see you out there soon. Dave.
PS. i'm all for an artificial reef but only if it doesn't alter the natural ecosystem too much. the area has a lot of important history.

I have been going to Borth since 1948 and will always remember it in it's almost pre- brummie village.
Now just a mere 6000 miles away, it only seems like yesterday that I had a pint in the Railway!
One day I will go back there!

Any Chance of having a Webcam for Borth Beach? It would be ideal if it could be put in the Lifeboat Station (similar to Porthcawl's Rest Bay). This would allow us Surfers to see the rips, Magicseaweed is good but not always 100%.

My wife and I, were at Borth and Ynyslas last weekend...the amount of litter left around by the uncaring, uncivilised, and loud masses who frequent the area is quite depressing.
Know nothing about surfing though. Watch out for the boy racers, and learner drivers ; Some who are as young as 13, whose parents let them 'practice' on the beach by the car park at Ynyslas.

Ynyslas is beautiful - until you get in the water!I had some fun on a (very) small longboard wave beside the golf club carpark last weekend with the rest of my family bodyboarding. The session came to an abrupt end when we spotted three separate lots of floating faeces. A local told us that this is an ongoing problem, and I note that the water quality last year was recorded as unsatisfactory, and none of the checks this year have been recorded on the beach board. The beach further south at Borth has a blue flag and has a good reputation for water quality - we'll stick with that end in future!

Borth is a good beach break because it is a very long stretch of coastline but the swell has to be quite good for it to be worth a good time.

It's good once you get right out there at borth - but the problem is consistency and too often there are days when there are too many waves coming in at any one time.

In the 70s. I and my sisters spent a happy childhood at Borth. My nan had a old battered caravan on the Sea Rivers camps site, Ynyslas. It was great waking up to all the nature and to see the Aberdovey in the mist. The sheep in the next field. I loved the sandunes and remember the wooden walkways being built by the hippies. The thousands of rabbit droppings and burrows everywhere. We used to pick penny winkles from the rocks at the top of Borth. When I think of happy childhood memories, I always think of Borth. And the best thing about Borth it hasn't changed and that's the beauty of the place. I love Borth and always will.

Got to agree with Dave and Henry on this one.
I think the last time it got up to 30ft. was in the late Autumn of 69. My best mate Bull Thomas tried to paddle out but the studs popped on his beaver tail and he landed back on the beach snapping his 9 inch fin at the same time. He also blammed the use of tropical waxmate instead of the temperate variety making the deck of his board very slippery. It only goes to show that riding extreme waves demands extreme equipment.

good waves some days but not consistent for extreme surfers like us. waves are rarely over 30ft so not good enough for that ultimate ride. dude!

I learnt to surf here, it's brilliant fun and has a really chilled out atmosphere. It's nicest in May when its warm and sunny but the best swell is in winter if you can put up with the cold!
I'm gonna miss this place so much.

Me and mate surfed Borth for the first time at the weekend (26/6/04). There was a strong SW wind but it was a lovely sunny day. The surf was messed up but we managed to catch some waves. I took out my new Southpoint 10'2. It worked well on the waves. Mate struggled a bit on a 7'3 Bic. Only saw one other out. Had a great day and will be returning some time.

Ynyslas is a fantastic place to surf, I've seen many a member of the surf club catch their first wave down there. It's particulary excellent in the spring, waves in both directions and plenty of space for everyone. It's not so pleasant in the winter when you have to get changed in the car park with that howling cold wind coming off the valley. Watch out for sea badgers who are particularly busy on a wednesday or saturday.
I shall miss surfing this spot, enjoy it.

Just come back from a long weekend (May Bank Hols) surfing at Borth and had a great time. Stuck to the section directly behind the golf course at the Ynyslas Turn car park. Surfed at various times of the tide around the 3ft to 4 ft mark and found it to be quite punchy, even glassy on Monday morning. Keep an eye on the weather charts for the next swell and get yourself down there. Also only saw a handful of other surfers all weekend.

Ynyslas end of borth is good for begineers as the rip at the life boat end can be quite strong and tends to carry weaker paddlers into the groins at high tide if they arn't carefull. Borth is much more forgiving than the Trap at Aber though. I really enjoy surfing here.
