Apart from the Harbour Trap, Aberystwyth has another few surfing spots further up the bay towards the top end of North Beach, just under Constitution Hill.
The area around Queens' Rocks is best. There are two or three breaks along here and all break onto either pebbly beach or rock.
The breaks can be easily spotted by walking along the promenade, past the sweep of hotels and student halls which are dotted along the seafront.
It takes a good sized swell to get these spots working but they can be a useful alternative if The Trap becomes crowded or too big!

So after 27 great years of living in Lovely Wales(Llanfyllin)and the surrounding area and another 3 crazy, drunken, partying fueled years living in St. Kilda Melbourne Australia, I finally wake up and say enough is enough. There must be more to this drunken hungover life I lead....then it came to me. I must learn to surf. 2 months into my new found hobby and im totally and utterly hooked. No more(ok not as much) stumbbling out of seedy clubs at 5 or 6 on a Saturday or Sunday morning.....Ohh no!Instead, the new me can be found anxiously waiting on the beach for that first light so I can get my daily surf fix....my only problem now is that I'm coming home for a 2 month holiday in August and my new best friend...mini mal 6"2 is coming with me .... Problem is I ain't got a clue where to go get my surf fix. I'm guessing that by August and the way I'm progressing I'll be slightly better than I am currently...although I hope I never lose the friendship I'm devloping with coral and reef!! Any local surf tips would be much appreciated....and anyone travelling to mid wales coastal area or north wales who wanna share fuel costs....why not give me a shout.

I have got a caravan near by. I have have been coming here since the late 70s and now i have got four kids of my own, and i think aber is a very good place for a family to have a fantastic holiday and the kids can have fun and there is loads to do so come and have a look your self.

My concern is that the near-shore environment as well as the off-shore environment of Cardigan Bay is protected.
I am not a surfer but I feel that their activity and participation in benign acquatic activities is a useful source of information that could be of use to anybody wanting to protect the delicate marine environment on our horizon.
Roy Ex (soon to be living there agin) Aber
I miss the trap so much. I used to live in the marina and get calls at 5/6am saying what it was doing. Dawnys are the way forward. Go back once a month or when I get a call saying it's going to be good.

Queens and North/Main beach are always best at low tide and work if there's a big ground swell or strong SW winds, but the rides here are nearly always poor. Bath rocks can provide a very gnarly short right hander that's probably the hollowest in the area. But be warned, this wave is pretty sketchy due to it being so shallow and has sucked dry on me a few times!!

Hey everyone.Just saying Ive come from Ireland and the waves here in Aber are so much cleaner in big conditions especially at the Trap but it is the most crowded spot I have ever surfed in my life looks like a trip to North beach is imperitive.

The breaks on 'north beach' are the best in Aber. I have surfed gaping 8ft barrels with dolphins jumping through the waves back in '78. The break under 'Cyntstitutional Hill', known as 'the Welsh Malibu' is awesome at low tide. If you need advice about where it is best to go in this area, try a pub called 'Llew Du' in Bridge Street and ask for 'Uffar Gwirion' or 'Uffy' for short.
