Teifi trotting races 2009

Trottong at Aberystwyth

Last updated: 24 August 2009

The Teifi committee trotting races were held at Aberystwyth on Saturday 22 August 2009. Maureen Lloyd of Wales & Border Counties Harness Racing sent us this report of the day's racing:

"The glorious sunny day on Saturday was just reward for the Teifi committee on this their first Saturday fixture on the Tan-y-castell track near Aberystwyth. It shows that hard work and perseverance pays off, as the huge crowd were treated to a warm 'Cardi' welcome, with some incredible racing, great food and drink, entertainment for the children, and even the race-card provided enough information and interest for a wonderful afternoon.

The two winners of the Nursery races moved up the racing ladder, Luck Matters (Roach Llanybydder) later ran in the three year old race while Durham Direct and Austin Hughes from Builth raced in the Baby novices. In the three year old the grey Brywins Snowflake driven by his taxi-driver owner Horst Weigel from Llanddewi Velfrey produced a classy run to win from first time in competitive racing Luck Matters (Roach, Llanybydder) while Glan Levit (Evans Talgarreg) on his last run of the season was third.

The Novice heats were next on the card when the impressive Man of the Day owned by the Harries family from Llanllwni were first past the post with East of Eden (Pritchard Rhosgoch) maintaining her reputation for always being in the shake-up, in second and C U Boykin (Hitchcock, Haverfordwest) another horse who is always there or thereabouts, was third. The Red Devil (Greenway, Michaelchurch) ran a cracking race to take the top honours from newly promoted Scarlet Lady and Andrew Bevan from Builth, while the other new recruit Sandside Cash (Elder, New Quay) was third.

The Grade B was a straight race this week but with terrific prize money on offer it was still fast and furious with the well regarded Forgeside Jack (Walker Gwernogle) driven by Mathew Williams claiming victory from the sometimes erratic My Immortal (Evans Brecon) while Maple Star (Prosser Libanus) was in third spot. This graduates Forgeside Jack into the premiere division of the Grade A.

The little chestnut mare Believe belonging to the Pritchard family from Rhosgoch took the first heat of the Grade A with determination, beating the grey, Live the Dream (Langford Ammanford) and the sleek racing machine Obi-Wan-Kenobi (Williams Llanafan) while Boomerang qualified in fourth. Merrington Man (Thomas Rhymney) took the second heat with Vodka Express (Weigel, Llanddewi Velfrey) in second Shermanator Sam (Tromans, Newcastle Emlyn) third and Ithon Ace (Williams, Shrewsbury) sneaking into the final in fourth.

Three Baby Novice races were next on the menu, and in the first there was great excitement at the bar when the owners James & Glesni Evans from Newcastle Emlyn shouted home their youngster Clare's Own, while Llanybydder horse Razzle Dazzle (George Thomas) was second and Saunders Playboy (Pritchard Rhosgoch) was third.

Classic Man (Langford Ammanford) was a well received winner of the second race as Wayne Knox cajoled him to the front of the improving Tricksters Dream (Flint Porthcawl) with the well named Zip Along (Harries, Llanllwni) in third. Brywins Snowflake (Weigel, Llanddewi Velfrey) claimed her second victory of the day in the third Baby Novice race as a finale to her season's racing with The Crusader (Greenway Michaelchurch Eskley) in second and Wellfield Inspired (Griffiths Pontardawe) third.

The Junior race is one of the hall marks of Wales & Border racing when the youngsters try and upstage those of more mature years. This week four lined up, two experienced drivers, one boy having his first drive, and a girl in her second race.

It was quite a battle with Dale Williams from Brecon on the young Abernant looking for victory when young Elin Bevan on the old-stager Scoot 66 took the inside line and grabbed victory while new comer William Isaac third generation of the racing Isaac family from Ystrad Meurig, confirmed the family talent with Ynyston Tommy coming third while Ryan Walters failed to overcome the age old problem of a long handicap, on Family Circle.

The dash is another popular race and the new connections of Coalford Time (Susan Harries & crew from Merthyr) were jumping for joy as Derek Pritchard steered him over the winning line in front of Fold American (Perks Presteigne) and Serenity (Jones, Llanllwni) thus qualifying Coalford time for open racing.

The ladies Free For All was the next race with a mix of experience amongst the drivers, but it was one of the most experienced, Marie Lamport from Cribyn on the recently purchased Irish horse Springhill Horizon, who responded to a rare chance to race off the gate, and gained the verdict from the camera.

Helen Brisland as deputy to Melanie Langford has obviously picked up several driving tips driving Purple Rain (Edwards, Bromfield) who were narrowly beaten into second with Bon Bethan driven by Linda Atherton in third.

The consolation is another race which plays a significant part in Wales & Border racing and this week it was Master Tom (Owens Shobdon) who gained from a second run beating the much fancied Seren Penlan (R Lloyd Painscastle) with Ystwyth Gwynfor (Jones, Church Stretton) in third.

The Novice final is always hotly contested and this week was no exception, but newly promoted Scarlet Lady with owner Andrew Bevan on board, swept to victory ahead of East of Eden (Pritchard Rhosgoch), with The Red Devil (Greenway, Michaelchurch) in third.

The Grade A final was the finale to a superb afternoon of racing and it was the ever popular Ithon Ace with the unpretentious Stephen Williams from Shrewsbury who claimed the glory of the biggest prize money in Mid Wales, so close but still second was Teifi committee man Mathew Tromans with the irrepressible Shermanator Sam while the mighty Boomerang Peters Welshpool) was third.
