Quoits

Quoits player in 1981

Last updated: 12 November 2007

Quoits is an ancient game which involves throwing an iron ring around a pin or peg in the ground. It's a sport which has been around for more than 2,000 years and Wales has been competing at international level for more than a century.

  • Wales v Scotland Quoits International 2007...

  • Linda Evans from Caersws is Joint Secretary of the Welsh Quoiting Board. She was at the Annual Quoits International between Wales and Scotland on 26 July 2003 and sent us this report.

"There are minutes of the Montgomeryshire County Quoiting League dating date back as far as 1924.

Montgomeryshire County Quoits League was established comprising the six villages of Tregynon, Llandyssil which boasted an A and B team, Bwlchyffridd, Bettws, Caersws, New Mills. The County Quoiting League in Montgomeryshire was still running at least until 1950.

The annual quoits international between Wales and Scotland, held at Felinfach near Lampeter on Saturday 26 July, was won by Wales who beat Scotland by 202 points to 111.

The two Mid Wales players Brendon Lloyd and Russell Owen had differing fortunes with Welsh Captain Lloyd beating his opposite number Hugh Cunningham by 21 points to 8 while Owen narrowly lost his game to Kenny Hay of Birkenshaw by just two points. Since his first showing in the Welsh side in 1998, this was the first game Owen had lost.

The unseasonal weather made life difficult for both sets of players to deliver their quoits, with heavy showers making the running boards slippery underfoot. However, Felinfach club were amply prepared with plenty of sawdust for the players to put down, shelter and sustenance for the supporters, and the match was played to its natural conclusion.

A reception was held in the Granell Hotel, Llanwnnen on Saturday evening where Dorian Thomas of Saron Club was presented with the Wales Man-of-the-Match award and Kenny Forbes of Stonehaven Club with Scotland Man-of-the-Match award."

Reading the post of Gerard and Fiona Waldron, I for one will miss Hugh Cunningham greatly. He travelled to Wales, and Caersws in particular annually and was a very popular figure in the village, not just in quoiting circles. I knew he had been ill for some time, and heard of his untimely death from Prestwick colleagues. I was only sorry not to have been able to travel to Scotland to pay my last respects. I believe Prestwick Quoiting Club plan to organise a quoiting competition in his memory.

To Richie LeakI don't think there are any quoits played in Hereford, but if you could travel, Caersws Open competition will be held on Sat 4th July 2009 and you'd be welcome to try your hand there. Ours however, is the 'long' game - 18 yards.

Shot in the dark but I was wondering if anyone has any photographs of the England Quoits Teams or Essex teams between 1929 & 1937 as my grandfather was J W Moss from Chelmsford, Essex. Unfortunately we don't have any photographs just an extremely large cup (name escapes me)in a huge glass dome which was his pride and joy.

Hugh Cunningham, aged 69, sadly passed away in the early hours of the morning of 20 November after taking ill very suddenly. He was a long standing member of the Birkenshaw Quoiting Club and was a true and loyal ambassador for both his sport and his country.Hugh will be deeply missed by his family, friends and fellow players of his sport. To me, I found him true, good and the best of company.I shall, like those who knew Hugh, remain profoundly saddened by his passing.Gerard Waldron, Fiona Waldron and familySon in law Daughter

I believe that a man from the fife area won the world quoiting championships in the 40s ie 50s according to a man who came from this area he works beside me and as a youngster and teenager played this game. It was a very popular game among the Fife miners as a pastime when the village men had little work and money was short.

Please come along and give me further stories atrifacts and photos held by your family so I can record them for future generations. Fife Family History Society have offered to publish my research. I a looking forward to my first quoiting international match in Wales. At our recent AGM of the Scottish Quoiting Association I volunteered as treasurer of the Association. On a positive note, both sponsorship for shirts and travel seems to be taken care of. I am also looking forward to the Welsh hospitality that so many folk talk about.

I have currently moved to herefordshire and was wondering if there is any quoits played in the area? I have played Quoits before in the NQA, in the North Esat of England and was wondering if it is the same game that is played up North? Any information on this would be helpful as i am a keen player & would like to keep on playing.
