We've had this query from James who's a student in Aberystwyth:
"I am looking for an area that would be within walking distance of the centre of town, as that is where i'am living this year, where I will be allowed to go power kiting?
If you are unaware of what power kiting is, it is a large (4.9m) kite on 82ft lines that is designed to give large amounts of lift and drag providing the flyer with the abilitiy of "flying" in a loose sense of the word or jumping, the size of the jumps depends on the wind speed.
A large field with either low or no hedges would be ideal or a field large enough to set up away from the hedge (preferably 15m+), the field needs also idealy to be flat and facing the prevaling wind direction, which for those who don't know is south west, but can vary between west and south.
If there are any such places open to the public and would be free of charge then I would be very happy to hear about them, but also if there are any local land owners who would be willing to allow me access to unused field I would also be extremely grateful."
Jenny from Studley says:
"Hey you could go to Borth beach ... down by the estuary, kinda near ynylas .... if you wanna jump the groynes, or have a death wish ... it's a laugh."
Chris is also an Aber student and says it's best to venture outside town:
"There isn't really anywhere. The uni fields are ok but the rugby and football posts are a bit hazerdous. Ynyslas is awesome for powerkiting, but get there at the right time. The best place is Aberdyfi however. So much sand, it's like Pembrey there when tides out. Just catch a train there. Seriously, it's worth doing."
Tim from Aberystwyth says there's been talk of setting up a club:
"If you can't make it out to Ynyslas, the uni' playing fields out by Safeways are big enough, though there are rugby posts we've found they aren't a problem really. Some of the guys at the uni' are looking at setting up a powerkite club, so keep a lookout for any news on it."
Anna from Ynyslas emailed us with this suggestion :
"Ynyslas is the place to go. It gets quite busy in the summer. As long as everyone using kites is aware of other beach users it seems to work OK. There's a bus from Aber that stops right by the beach (get off right at the far end of Borth, past the golf course to save yourself a walk!)"
Neil from Aberystwyth emailed us with this info :
"It's not strcitly within walking distance but the beach at ynyslas seems to be popular with power kiters and people on buggies powered by kites, certainly it's massive, and windy."
If you can help, contact us and we'll add your suggestions to the site.

Ynylas or Borth is a good close beach to Aber, I'm regularly going up there. As far as I'm concerned there is no longer a Power Kite Club at uni. How could I go about setting it up again? Or even getting hold of any equipment left over?

I used to run the Aberystwyth Uni Power Kite Club. We would meet every Sunday at Ynyslas. I was president from 2001-2003 but gave up when I graduated. There's plenty of interest. Go see the sports guys in the union, they should still have all our kit (a couple of kites and a buggy) and all the details. There was even a couple of quid in the kitty I believe.

It was quite funny getting the posters made up. Obviously they were all bilingual and not being a welsh speaker I had to get them translated. They came back with "Y Barcud" written on them, which you Aberystwythians will know meant Red Kite club (the bird. Not quite power kiting club. The irony, I now work for the RSPB!
