Newbridge trotting races 2009

True grit

Last updated: 17 August 2009

The annual trotting races were held at Newbridge-on-Wye on Wednesday 12 August 2009. Maureen Lloyd of Wales & Border Counties Harness Racing sent us this report of the day's racing:

"Newbridge races are one of the most popular of all the mid week meetings and despite some rain earlier in the day the evening turned out fine and bright. The atmosphere was lovely with a lot of local support amongst the enthusiastic crowd of spectators.

The Nursery races started the afternoon, with the homebred Eve Again (Miles Merthyr) winning the first and new recruit Durham Direct owned by races secretary Austin Hughes winning the second.

Coalford Time (Hardwick Brecon) ran his best race of the season to claim victory in the first Novice heat beating the reliable Duggans Domino (Gwatkin Evenjobb) and the recently rested The Red Devil (Greenway, Michaelchurch Eskley). In the second heat Fold American (Perks Presteigne) driven by Wayne Knox took top honours from East of Eden (Pritchard Rhosgoch) with Sunnyside Geoff (Clark Brecon) in third.

Forgeside Jack (Walker Gwernogle) took the first heat of the Grade B beating Chinatown Maori (Jones Llanllwni) and the square trotter Belleheir (Ladek, Cleobury Mortimer). In the second Grade B heat Bon Beti (Evans Jones Rhymney) added another win to driver Derek Pritchard's score beating Maple Star (Prosser, Libanus) and Blackfield Willy (Barton Clunderwen).

Bon Bethan the beautiful black mare belonging to the Weigel, Llanddewi Velfrey family won the first heat of the Grade A beating Merrinton Man (Thomas Rhymney) into second and Master Tom (Owens Shobdon) third. In the second heat Live the Dream (Langford Ammanford) was first past the post while Believe (Pritchard Rhosgoch) was second and local horse Obi-Wan-Kenobi (Williams, Llanafan) was third.

Scarlet Lady with owner Andrew Bevan from Builth on board won the first Baby novice race therefore graduating to the Novices, in second was True Grit (Thomas, Tregroes) with Ithon Artist (Wozencraft, Llangurig) third. In the second Baby Novice race Alpine Heights with blacksmith owner Brent Ladek from Cleobury Mortimer beat Murray who reunited with owner Linda Atherton in the sulky (after a fall at home made her a spectator at the races) was second, and Saunders Playboy (Pritchard Rhosgoch) was third.

The next race was the saddle race and unfortunately I'm Still the Man fell, injuring rider Sabrina Stephens from Penybont. The racing then ceased while arrangements were made for her transfer to hospital. She was transferred to The Heath hospital in Cardiff where she is making good progress and should be home shortly.">/p>
