    About the Club

  • Ground - The Recreation Ground, Llansantffraid, Powys (known locally as the 'Treflan').
  • Telephone: 01691 828112
  • Nickname: The Saints
  • Potted History: TNS used to stand for Total Network Solutions who sponsored the club but when the sponsorship changed hands in 2005, the acronym was changed to The New Saints. The team was originally known as Llansantffraid FC. The club joined the Welsh League in 1993, won the League Cup in 1995, picked up the Welsh Cup in 1996 and were crowned Welsh Premier champions in 2000. TNS agreed a merger with Oswestry Town in 2003 (see BBC Sport archive...). TNS were league champions in 2004-05 when they also picked up the Welsh Cup. They were then drawn against reigning champions Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League, losing 3-0 in both legs. TNS were league champions again in 2005-06 when they also picked up the League of Wales Cup and picked up the title yet again in 2006/7, also becoming only the second Welsh Premier side to lift the FAW Premier Cup.

How out of touch and indifferent the BBC are! The national football champions of Wales are playing in the Champions League yet the BBC nor S4C and independent radio stations have no coverage apart from periodic reports on Radio Wales. It really is disgraceful where a national broadcaster offers no live coverage neither on TV nor radio and must surely be the only such broadcaster in Europe to be so uncaring.TNS should have sent the TV companies packing last year when they were eager to cover the match at the same stage of the competition against Liverpool. If the chairman of TNS had have had any nous about him he'd have forced, let's say, a three-year deal out of the broadcasters. The money wasn't the important thing; the exposure was. A missed chance. My prediction for the tie against Ventspils? Well, it's always difficult for the likes of TNS as most of the potential opposition are from eastern Europe and whose seasons are already halfway through. Their likes are much better placed than TNS who are caught cold before playing a competitive game. Good luck for tonight TNS. Oh in my dreams I can see the 2008 final: TNS v Liverpool! Well, I can dream can't I?

I am a Liverpool fan and am really pleased that we drew TNS. Not for the obvious reasons of not having to travel far, but because Wales has always been good to Liverpool both in terms of the wonderful reception we get in Cardiff and the number of fans travelling over the border to support both Liverpool Clubs. In that vein, if TNS need somewhere to play their home leg, look no further than Goodison Park. I am sure their manager, the blue, would love it!!
