"A total of six special chariots (using traditional Roman mild steel, vulcanised rubber and welding techniques) were commissioned for the event, sponsored by local hostelries.
Fifteen chariot teams (2 riders plus the charioteer) took up the challenge to overcome the trials presented by the chariots, the course, and the other competitors.
The course itself comprised a figure of eight around an obstacle course and lake, along tracks which were liberally scattered with potholes, puddles up to 10 mtr long, speed bumps, and plenty of mud!
Qualifying heats of two teams at a time were run to determine the fastest four who would all compete in the grand final, and in an electrifying finish the inaugural World Champions came in just 1 second in front of the silver medallists, having only taken the lead in the final 25 metres.
The winners were John Lloyd Racing Events Ltd in a time of 5 minutes 47.44 seconds, just 1.05 seconds ahead of silver medallists Astro Engines. The bronze medal position was taken by the Muddy Medics in a time of 6 minutes 49.06 seconds.
The world cup and winning medals were presented by Gordon Green, chairman of Green Events, and prizes were also awarded for the best Roman costumes.
As it is an annual event, potential world champions will have to wait until next January for the opportunity to wrest the (laurel) crowns from the current holders. At least this gives plenty of time for practising!"
