"So, the World Cup is over, and it's time to return to the slightly (only slightly) less exciting prospect of a new season in the Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth League and its associated cup competitions. This year I hope to bring reports every week, and there may be pictures as well, as a camera is being provided by the kind people at BBC Mid-Wales (and people say the licence fee isn't worth it).
This week I will be looking ahead to the new season, and making one or two predictions for the forthcoming campaign.
Division One looks quite open this year, as there have been a number of changes. Tywyn/Bryncug have gained a promotion to the Spar Mid-Wales League after their second-placed finish last year. The challengers will therefore probably come from the rest of the group that formed the top half of last year's table.
Reigning champions Penrhyncoch Reserves will look to retain their title, and should mount a good challenge. The capture of Llanilar striker Gareth Hughes should be a good addition, and if many of the squad from last year are still in place they will be dangerous.
Bow Street do not appear as confident as last season, as they have lost striker Tony Jones to Penrhyncoch's first team, while midfielder Peter Griffiths has also left the club to concentrate on coaching. Nevertheless they still retain many of last years Emrys Morgan-winning side, and they will be amongst the teams in with a shout, though perhaps their emphasis should be on league consistency rather than cup glory.
Penparcau are always dangerous, especially at home, and they will challenge again. My personal opinion is that Penrhyn Reserves will defend their title, though I don't expect much daylight between them and the rest.
Of the other teams, Bont's 60th anniversary was celebrated with a game between them and a Cambrian Tyres League 'All-Star' (I use those words very loosely) XI. The game ended 2-2, and I expect Bont to be the best of the rest this season as they are, to use the words of an opposing player, "always a tough fixture".
Dolgellau should come back strongly from a dismal campaign last year. Llanrhystud are a team who enjoy themselves too much to be title contenders, Llanon will probably be happy with another mid-table finish, while Llanilar have changed their manager, lost a few players and will need some quick signings to do anything but finish in lower mid-table.
Tregaron should make a good impression after their promotion last season, and I expect them to consolidate their place. Talybont may not be so lucky, however, and I think they may be among the teams scrapping at the bottom. The other teams down there will probably be the usual suspects, Padarn and Aberdyfi. Aberdyfi have now survived relegation by the skin of their teeth for the past 3 years, but this time may be a step too far. I think they will be relegated, along with either Padarn or Talybont.
Division Two looks quite interesting as well. Aberystwyth Town have entered a Thirds team in this years competition, and they have immediately been installed as favourites for the Second Division title. The relegation of UWA Reserves from Division One means the university should field a very strong team in Division Two, and an immediate return to the top should be considered a very real possibility.
Here's hoping for a good season! And if you would like to disagree with the above or plead your team's case please leave a comment below. But no abuse please."

I went to watch the rep match and didn't see Lee there, nor the mysterious Mr Puw (probably too far to travel from Tywyn). I find it amazing that they're able to comment in such terms when they didn't even attend and probably have absolutely no idea how much work goes into organising such an event. Where do you get all of your information Lee? You must have spies everwhere?!

Unfortunately Huw, due to several clubs being unable to provide the said manager with a single player, the 18 players used were from clubs based close to Aberystywth. Due to the obvious and legitimite problems of getting from the likes of Aberdyfi, Tywyn and Dolgellau on a week night to Bont in time for a 6.30pm kick off, these teams, amongst others, were not represented. All clubs in the league received a request for players and thankfully 9 teams were able to meet that request. At the last minute the said manager required one more player due to a last minute withdrawal and therefore called up one extra player from his own club.

Huw Puw, Tywyn.
If it was a league representative side with players from as many teams as possible being represented, why were certain players drafted in at the last minute from the representative side's manager’s own team? Slight favouritism surely?
Look forward to your reports Lee, keep up the good work!

Many thanks to Huw for the correction. I apologise to the players who I incorrectly labelled 'stars'.

Lee has got his facts slightly wrong. Bont played a 'League Representative 11' with the emphasis upon as many teams in the League being represented. Nine teams in total were represented, with every player being given at least a half, whether they were one of the league 'stars' or not. Nevertheless, it was a great honour for the players and the management alike to be involved in the match in order to help mark Bont's 60th anniversary.
Despite the above, I look forward with baited breath to Lee's comments throughout what promises to be a very exciting season.
