"There's only one place to begin this weeks report, and it has to be in Tregaron, where the great Division One trial of strength took place between the Turfs and Bow Street. The winner of the game would be entitled to call themselves favourites for the league title.
And the decision went to Bow Street, but only via a single Martin Williams goal. It was sweet revenge for the Magpies, who had seen their defence of the Emrys Morgan Cup falter at the hands of Tregaron. Bow Street boss Huw Bates was said to be delighted with his players efforts, and I have to admit it is a massive win in the title race. Bow Street now lead Tregaron by three points with five games left for both teams. The Turfs will certainly not have given up on the league, but with fixtures coming thick and fast for them in the cups they perhaps lack the Magpies single-minded focus on attaining the league crown.
There was another big game at the bottom of the table which saw Aberdyfi defeat Llanilar 2-1, courtesy of goals from Phil Betts and Glyn Davies. That result lifts Aberdyfi out of the bottom two and plunges Llanilar deep into relegation trouble. The one silver lining in the dark clouds massing over Llanilar is that they have five games left in the league while Aberdyfi only have one and have just four more points.
The situation was made more interesting by the fact that Padarn scored an important home win over Llanrhystud. Goals from Will Johnson, Simon Williams and Paul Benjamin saw the bottom side draw level with Llanilar on 13 points, though they have only three games left. Llanrhystud's consolations came via Jamie McGuinness and Neil Adams.
The complexity at the bottom of the table is added to by the fact I have no idea how many are getting relegated this year. I would assume the league would wish to restore Division One to its previous thirteen team strength after Llanon's departure from the top flight early this season.
If the two teams likely to be promoted, Aberystwyth Town Thirds and Tywyn/Bryncrug Reserves, are eligible (and I can see no reason why they wouldn't be) that would mean just one team being relegated. But if they want to keep the division to twelve teams, is it two-up, two-down or one-up, one-down? Any official comment would be welcome.
Elsewhere in Division One, Penrhyncoch Reserves ended Dolgellau's chances of making an impact at the top of the league with a 2-0 victory. Goals from Owain James and Dylan James see Penrhyn stay fourth, a good achievement considering their points deduction. Bont meanwhile gained a solid 1-0 victory at Talybont, the only strike courtesy of Sion Meredith. Both sides look comfortable in upper-mid table, but Bont will perhaps be a little disappointed as their excellent start suggested better things. But at least they won the Tipit championship on S4C.
In Division Two, Aberystwyth Town Thirds closed to within a point of Tywyn Reserves at the top with a 4-0 win at Penparcau Reserves. Machynlleth secured a 3-1 win over Llanon, and Dolgellau Reserves gained a 6-3 win at Trawsgoed.
Away from the league, the Second Division Trophy saw a Round 2 game, with Tywyn/Bryncrug Res defeating Llanilar Res 4-1, while Penparcau sadly tumbled out of the Cwpan Ceredigion at the Round 4 stage, courtesy of a 1-0 loss at St Dogmaels."
