"Another week, and another round of games in a series of competitions. The appalling weather at the weekend meant quite a few games were called off due to waterlogged pitches.
We start with the Cwpan Ceredigion Round 3, where the most eye-catching fixture was the clash between the current leaders of Division One, Tregaron, and the leaders of Division Two, Aberystwyth Town Thirds. This is the second time the Thirds have tested themselves against Division One opposition after the close League Cup loss to Bow Street.
The first half was a fairly even encounter, with Tregaron being the first to strike through Rhydian Garner, continuing his fine scoring record this season. However a minute later Aber were level, via a fairly clear penalty, coolly slotted away by Dan Jones. 1-1 at half time was a fair reflection of the game.
In the second half Tregaron began to get the upper hand and make their class show, and it was therefore justifiable that the Turfs got two quick goals through Jonathan Evans and Gethin Jones. To their credit, Aber hung on and grabbed a late consolation through Lee Perkins, but Tregaron were never going to slip and they progress to the next round.
The game was interesting in that it demonstrated that Aber, who will surely gain promotion this year, are still some way behind the top teams in Division One, despite their unbeaten start in Division Two.
Also in round 3 of the Cwpan Ceredigion, Llanrhystud slipped to a suprising defeat to Ceredigion League strugglers Aberaeron. A lone Andy Humphreys strike was not enough as Aberaeron got goals through Rhodri Lake, Steffan Gruffydd and Jody Costello to secure a 3-1 victory.
Penparcau continued their recent good form, despite a battling performance from visitors Padarn at Min-y-Ddol. An own goal, and strikes from Danny Whiteway and Matthew Davies were enough to ensure Penparcau's progress to the next round. Two goals from Will Johnson ensured a respectable 3-2 scoreline for Padarn.
In Division One this week, Penrhyncoch Reserves continued their quest to claw back their points deduction, and in the process they also secured an important win over fellow basement team Aberdyfi.
A Josh Shaw hat-trick was the highlight of Penrhyn's 8-0 demolition of an Aberdyfi team who are blatantly struggling this year.
The other goals were scored by Gareth Hughes, journeyman Clive 'Djemba' Morgan, Deian Thomas, Ben Sherbourne and confusingly, another Gareth Hughes who is unrelated to the other. I know one of them is an ex-Llanilar striker who calls me 'Leeds' when I see him but discerning which one scores in any given week is a task that is beyond me.
Penrhyn are now on minus 2 points, nine behind Aberdyfi at the bottom of the table, and eleven behind UWA Reserves, who continued their somewhat inconsistent campaign with a 4-2 loss to Talybont. Carl Jones, Sam Penfold, Steffan Fleming and James Fox got the goals for the Tigers, with Neil Harper and James Bevan getting the students' consolations. The win lifts Talybont into fifth, though they have played at least a game more than the teams around them.
In Division Two, Tywyn/Bryncrug Reserves moved level on points with Aber Thirds with a 2-1 win at Llanon, Machynlleth cemented third place with a 6-0 win over bottom side Penparcau Reserves, Dolgellau Reserves gained a encouraging 1-1 draw at Penrhyncoch Reserves, and Trawsgoed slipped to a disappointing 3-2 loss at home to Llanilar Reserves.
In the Emrys Morgan Cup, Bont progressed through to Round 3 with a 2-1 win over Ffostrasol. An own goal and a Dewi Sion Evans strike secured the title challengers progression.
This Saturday, barring another huge rainstorm or any tornados, we should see a number of games in the Emrys Morgan Cup Round 3.
The game that immediately sparks the attention is the clash between the top two in Division One, Bont and Tregaron. The result of that could be a pointer to the destination of the league title this year.
There are also interesting games between Llanilar and Llanrhystud, Bow Street and Newcastle Emlyn, Rhosgoch and Penparcau and Dolgellau and Kerry. In Division One, Padarn travel to Talybont, while Aberdyfi are desperately in need of a win at Blaendolau again UWA Reserves. There are also four fixtures in Division Two."
