Surfing Competition

Conditions couldn't have been better for the Borth Masters surfing competition held on 15 October 2005. One of the organisers Holly Rees from Llanon sent us this article about the event and the all-important results.

"Perfect sunshine, a direct offshore breeze and a well defined groundswell all made this, the first event of it's kind in the area a major success.

Competitors congregated on Saturday morning at Borth beach welcomed by 3 foot offshore surf.

The event was split into three categories; Men's shortboard, Men's Longboard and Women's open. Up for grabs were some outstanding prizes courtesy of STA Travel, Reef, Greyhound Australia, Footprint publications and Stormriders of Aberystwyth including a month long European surfari, including flights, accommodation and inter-rail pass, greyhound Australia Bus passes, Reef shoes, sandals and t-shirts,A wetsuit and skimboard,Baseball caps and rash vests,Footprint Surfing Europe Guide books.

The men's shortboard final was won by Tristan Pryce who bagged the European surfari. He scored consistently and won the contest by a mere 0.5 of a point from Martin Sayer.

The women's division was also taken by 0.5 of a point by local charger Charlotte Green, from Borth Local Laura Storr in second place. The girls showed a great deal of enthusiasm and surfing savvy, performing re-entries and cutbacks with style and commitment, setting a great example for women's surfing in the area.

The men's longboard was taken out by local style merchant and wave-catching machine - Martin Sayer. Another close heat saw an interference call taking Sayer's highest scoring wave away from him where he'd ridden the nose for 4 seconds. However a critical snap under the lip on a left sealed the victory for Sayer.

A great day was enjoyed by all, with local interest growing throughout the day in the glorious sunshine. The event oozed a relaxed vibe, with competitors, judges and spectators sharing jokes and smiles all day long.

Following on from the success of the event another local competition is planned for the same time in 2006."

Why not update with some pix of the last Borth Masters? When I heard there was a comp there, I made a few sarcastic comments about Borth and surf appearing in the same sentence.. saw the pix of the waves on the day.. ate humble pie! Head high, clean, hollow!

I was google(ing) my last name and found this site. Since I surf I was very interested. The name and surfing seemed to be a perfect little mix. I would love to know more about the competetion, the town, anything. If there is a shirt or any momento of the event past or future I would be interested in that as well.
