I lived for a while after the war in the Prefab on the road that ran alongside the Astoria picture house, one vivid memory was riding my three wheeler down the hill over the teddy bear bridge and nearly getting knocked down by a car, neadless to say the bike was sold,to save me from any more accidents,The Astoria picture house showed on a Monday the series of films, of Superman, and it was 3 old pence to go in,later i remember going to the Saturday hop at half-a-crown entry one week it was the drill hall, the next the Miners Welfare that was in the later years of the 50s,i also worked in the Abe! rcrave Colliery, and was a fully trained collier at 16 1/2 years,i also attended Maes-y-dderwen school until 1957 when i left at 15.

My grandparents then moved to Pen-y-Bont Row and eventually to Witney, Oxfordshire, at the start of world war II where my grandfather worked in the Witney blanket factory, along with two of my aunts and one uncle. Another uncle worked for Morris Oxford. I am so very pleased to say that in June I am coming home for three months holiday. I daresay I will have noticed a big change since I was last there in 1993 and can only! said how very, very sad I was that the canal had disappeared and the Gorof Road - they were really beautiful places and one of the best features of Ystradgynlais and to find a motorwa! y has changed the look of Ystradgynlais completely to its detriment. I have happy memories of the canal bank in the summer time, we used to walk that way home from Sunday school most of the time, then cut across the railway line and the playing fields to home.

Norah Nixon (nee Mathias) from Paeroa New Zealand
I was born in Ystradgynlais (Ynyscedwyn Road) to be precise. My eldest brother still lives there and my youngest brother lives in Ystalyfera. I left Ystradgynlais at the age of 23 for London where I met my husband, lived in Brentwood Essex for 10 years or so before emigrating to New Zealand. There were many generations and different branches of the Mathias family living in Ystradgynlais. My great-grandfather and my great-great-grandfather were stone masons there. My grandmother used to own the Pen-y-Bont Inn where my father was born.

My grandfather Abel Davies lived in Ystradgynlais until he was 16 when he came to America. He was the son of William and Margaret Davies. I visited Ystradgynlais in 1995. I would love to come back. I believe there are still relatives living there. I tried to locate a Thomas Thomas on my visit, but was unsuccessful. Thank you for this website.

Myself and my parents come from Ystrad & Ystalyfera originally and I still have quite a lot of family left there. I would love to hear from them. Whilst doing my nurse training in Singleton & Morriston hospitals in the 1970s, I used to spend some of my days off in either one or the other of the towns and I used to have a whale of a time! The rugby clubs of them both had quite a few dos and Ysalyfera had its summer carnival (I still have a photo of my now quite butch cousin Dewi Jones dressed up!!) My great grandparents owned the fish & chip shop in Station Rd which my grandfather, Jack Jones, took over years after they had ceased trading (my Great Grandmother used that room by renting it out to the local vet for his clinic,) whilst my Great grandfather relocated to up the road a bit!

Was at the Old Swan in nearby Ystalyfera some weeks back, I was very impressed with a band from Ystradgynlais called Quest, they are a must see, vesatile band which appeals to my generation(30/40s and older), they cover all the stuff from the 60s 70s 80s and throw in the odd new one too. Good luck Quest and thanks.
